The closest Apple-supported equivalent to a full Apple TV clone is to set up the new Apple TV with your iPhone, sign in with the same Apple Account, and enable One Home Screen. That can synchronize the default profile’s Home screen and app list, while Apple Account, Wi‑Fi, iCloud Home accessories and scenes can be restored through the same account. You should still download any unfinished apps, sign in to third-party services again when asked, recheck audio/video preferences, and keep the old Apple TV until everything works.
What actually transfers to a new Apple TV 4K?
Apple does not document a universal export-and-import process that copies every tvOS preference, third-party password, app-specific save or profile exactly. Transfer is therefore a combination of account setup, Home screen synchronization and manual verification rather than a single “restore everything” command.

| Item | What Apple’s setup features can do | What you may need to do |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Account | Set Up with iPhone can add the Apple Account used on the nearby iPhone or iPad. | Confirm that the correct account is shown. Use manual setup if you need a different account. |
| Wi‑Fi | Wi‑Fi settings can be added automatically with Set Up with iPhone. | Wait for the new Apple TV to connect, or enter the network and password manually. |
| Home screen and app list | One Home Screen keeps the Home screen and apps the same across Apple TV devices using the same Apple Account. | It applies to the default profile only. Allow missing apps to download and install. |
| App binaries | Apps can be downloaded again from the App Store. | Install anything that is missing or still waiting to download. |
| Third-party logins | No universal automatic migration of service credentials is promised. | Open each affected app and authenticate again when prompted. |
| App-specific data | The cited Apple setup guidance does not promise that every app’s local data or settings will move. | Use the individual app’s own account or restore process, if it provides one. |
| Home accessories and scenes | Signing in to iCloud Home with the same Apple Account makes Home accessories and scenes configured on other devices available. | Check that iCloud is enabled and test controls before retiring the old Apple TV. |
| Every tvOS preference | There is no documented complete export/import for all preferences. | Review display, audio, network, accessibility, restrictions and remote settings manually. |
Prepare before connecting the replacement
Keep the old Apple TV available
Do not erase, reset or sell the old unit until the replacement has passed your checks. The old device is your reference for account names, Home screen folders, audio output, display format, restrictions and app-specific sign-in details. If a service requires a code or a device must be removed from an account, having the old Apple TV available makes recovery easier.
Have the required hardware ready
- Use a compatible HDMI cable. Apple specifies HDMI 2.0 or later for 4K HDR; HDMI 2.1 provides access to all Apple TV features.
- Connect the Apple TV to power and plug the HDMI cable into the television or AV receiver input you intend to use.
- Have Wi‑Fi credentials available, or connect Ethernet if your model and network use a wired connection.
- Charge and unlock the iPhone or iPad you plan to use for automatic setup, and keep it near the Apple TV with Bluetooth enabled.
- Know which Apple Account should be the default account on the new device. Set Up with iPhone is convenient, but it is not the right choice if the nearby iPhone uses a different account.
Record settings that are easy to overlook
Before unplugging the old Apple TV, note the audio output device, television picture mode, dynamic-range and frame-rate choices, screen-saver preferences, accessibility options, content restrictions, user profiles and any custom app folders. Apple’s synchronization features do not amount to a documented copy of every tvOS preference, so this short inventory prevents surprises later.

Set up the new Apple TV with an iPhone or iPad
- Connect the hardware. Plug in power, connect HDMI, turn on the television and select the correct HDMI input. If you want wired networking, connect Ethernet before setup; otherwise choose your Wi‑Fi network during setup.
- Start the setup assistant. Follow the on-screen prompts until the Apple TV offers Set Up with iPhone or iPad.
- Bring the iPhone or iPad close. Unlock it and keep it beside the Apple TV. Follow the prompts that appear on the iPhone or iPad, including any request to confirm the Apple Account or enter a verification code.
- Let the account and network details populate. Apple says this process can automatically add the Apple Account and Wi‑Fi settings. It does not mean that every third-party password or app database has been copied.
- Finish the on-screen setup. Accept the remaining prompts, choose the intended default profile and wait for the Apple TV to reach the Home screen.
- Check the account immediately. Open the account area and verify the email address or account identity. If it is wrong, stop and sign out or restart setup rather than building the rest of the configuration on the wrong account.
If the iPhone prompt does not appear, keep both devices unlocked and nearby, verify that the iPhone has network access, and restart the Apple TV setup assistant. You can always choose manual setup and enter the account and Wi‑Fi information with the Siri Remote.
Turn on One Home Screen
One Home Screen is the feature that keeps the default profile’s Home screen layout and app list consistent across Apple TV devices using the same Apple Account. It is the most direct way to reproduce your old arrangement, but it is not a complete device image and it does not apply to every profile.
- On the new Apple TV, open Settings.
- Choose Profiles and Accounts.
- Select the default profile that uses the same Apple Account as the old Apple TV.
- Turn on One Home Screen.
- Leave the Apple TV connected to the network while the Home screen and app list synchronize.
Apple describes One Home Screen as keeping the Home screen and apps the same across Apple TV devices. Only the default profile can use this option. If the old Apple TV and new Apple TV use different Apple Accounts, or if you enable it under another profile, the expected layout will not appear.

Wait for apps, then reinstall anything missing
Allow synchronization and downloads to finish
After One Home Screen is enabled, some app icons may appear before their app packages have finished downloading. Leave the Apple TV powered on with a reliable network connection. Download time varies with connection speed, server load and the number of apps involved.
Install an app manually
- Open the App Store on the Apple TV.
- Search for the missing app by name, or open your purchased apps list if that is available for the account.
- Select Get or the download button and authenticate if requested.
- Wait for installation, then return to the Home screen and place the app where you want it.
Apple’s setup documentation gives streaming apps such as Netflix, Hulu and HBO Max as examples of apps that can be downloaded. Their presence on the old Apple TV does not guarantee that their credentials, profiles or offline state will transfer. Treat each app as a separate sign-in check.
Sign in to services again when necessary
Open every app you use regularly, not just the ones that show an obvious login screen. Some services use a code displayed on the television and a phone or computer for authentication; others require an email address and password. Complete the app’s own process and confirm that the correct profile, subscription level, watch history and parental controls are visible. Do not assume that an icon on the Home screen means the account is ready.

Restore iCloud Home accessories and scenes
If the old Apple TV acted as a Home hub or displayed your Home controls, verify iCloud Home on the new device:

- Choose Users and Accounts.
- Select your account.
- Open iCloud and make sure you are signed in with the same Apple Account used for your Home configuration.
Apple says the same Apple Account is required for iCloud Home, which makes Home accessories and scenes configured on other devices available. Test a light, lock, thermostat or scene from the Home app or control interface. If an accessory is missing, verify the account first; do not immediately delete and re-pair the accessory, because that can create a second configuration or require the accessory’s own reset procedure.
Set Up with iPhone versus manual setup
| Consideration | Set Up with iPhone or iPad | Manual setup |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Usually faster because account and Wi‑Fi details can be added automatically. | Slower because you enter details with the Siri Remote or on-screen keyboard. |
| iPhone availability | Requires a nearby, unlocked iPhone or iPad that can complete the prompts. | No nearby iPhone or iPad is required. |
| Account choice | Convenient when the nearby device uses the intended Apple Account. | Better when you need to enter a different Apple Account or keep accounts separate. |
| Control over network entry | Wi‑Fi details can be supplied automatically. | You choose the network and enter its password yourself. |
| After setup | Still requires One Home Screen, app checks, Home verification and service sign-ins. | Requires the same post-setup checks. |
Neither route is a guaranteed clone. Choose the iPhone method for convenience when the account match is correct; choose manual setup when you need deliberate control over the account or network details.

Verification checklist before you retire the old Apple TV
Work through this list while the old unit is still available:
- Account: Confirm the Apple Account, purchase history and intended default profile.
- Home screen: Check folders, app order and the presence of frequently used apps.
- Downloads: Open the App Store and make sure no important app is still waiting to install.
- Streaming services: Launch each service, verify the right user profile and play a short item.
- Purchases: Check that purchased movies, shows or subscriptions appear under the expected account.
- Home: Test accessories, scenes and automations that depend on the Apple TV.
- Video: Confirm resolution, HDR behavior, dynamic-range matching and frame-rate matching with representative content.
- Audio: Test television speakers, receiver, soundbar, AirPlay speakers or headphones, whichever you use.
- Remote: Check volume control, power control, charging and any paired Bluetooth accessories.
- Profiles and restrictions: Switch between users and verify screen-time, content restrictions and purchase approvals.
- Accessibility: Confirm captions, audio descriptions, VoiceOver, zoom, appearance and text settings.
- Network: Test both app browsing and video playback; a device can appear connected while still having DNS, captive-portal or bandwidth problems.
Only after these checks should you sign out, erase or sell the old Apple TV. If you need to keep it as a fallback, leave it untouched until the new device has worked through at least one normal viewing and Home-control session.

The iPhone setup option is missing
- Unlock the iPhone or iPad and keep it close to the Apple TV.
- Confirm that it has network access and that wireless connectivity is enabled.
- Restart the setup process on the Apple TV and look again for Set Up with iPhone or iPad.
- If the prompt still does not appear, select manual setup. You can still enable One Home Screen after signing in.
The Home screen does not match
- Check that both devices use the same Apple Account.
- Open Settings > Profiles and Accounts and select the default profile before enabling One Home Screen.
- Give synchronization time to complete while the Apple TV remains online.
- Remember that One Home Screen is limited to the default profile; other profiles may have different layouts and app availability.
An app icon is present but the app will not open
Wait for the download to finish, then open the App Store and inspect the app directly. If installation fails, check network access, available storage and whether the app is compatible with the Apple TV model and current tvOS release. Reinstalling the app may be appropriate, but do not erase the old device until you have confirmed that the service account and required data are available.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
A service asks for a password again
This is expected for many third-party apps. Complete the service’s sign-in or code-based activation flow. If you do not know the password, recover it using the service’s official account process while the old Apple TV remains signed in as a reference. Apple’s setup process does not promise a universal transfer of third-party credentials.
Home accessories are missing
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > your account > iCloud and confirm the same Apple Account is signed in.
- Check that the accessory is visible from another device using the same Home configuration.
- Restart the Apple TV and test again before removing or re-pairing accessories.
4K HDR or audio features are unavailable
Verify the HDMI path. Apple specifies HDMI 2.0 or later for 4K HDR, while HDMI 2.1 provides access to all Apple TV features. Check the cable, television input and any receiver or switch between the Apple TV and television. A cable or intermediate device that does not support the required signal can limit the formats shown in Apple TV settings.
What you should not expect to copy automatically
Plan manual work for items that are not covered by Apple’s documented synchronization features:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Passwords and authentication tokens held by third-party apps.
- App-specific local data, downloads, games or saved positions unless the app synchronizes them through its own account.
- Every tvOS preference, including display, audio, accessibility, restrictions and accessory behavior.
- Layouts for profiles other than the default profile.
- Device-specific Bluetooth pairings and remote behavior.
These limitations do not prevent a successful move; they define the boundary between Apple Account and Home screen synchronization and a true device image, which Apple does not document for this process.
When manual setup is the better choice
Use manual setup instead of Set Up with iPhone when the nearby iPhone uses another person’s Apple Account, when the Apple TV will belong to a different household member, when you need a different Wi‑Fi network, or when you want to review every account entry yourself. After manual setup, sign in to the intended Apple Account, enable One Home Screen for the default profile if appropriate, install missing apps and complete the same verification checklist. The post-setup work is the same; only the way the initial account and network details are entered changes.
Final decision
For most upgrades, the reliable sequence is: connect the new Apple TV 4K with the right HDMI hardware, choose Set Up with iPhone or iPad, confirm the Apple Account, enable One Home Screen for the default profile, wait for apps to download, sign in to services, enable iCloud Home and test every important function. Because Apple does not promise a complete clone of third-party credentials, app data or every tvOS preference, keep the old Apple TV until those tests pass.
