Facebook does not document a single, global “reset recommendations” button. The reliable reset is a sequence of feedback actions: open Feed preferences, unfollow sources you no longer want in your Feed, hide poor matches or choose Show fewer, and mark posts or topics Interested or Not interested. Repeat those choices as new items appear; consistent feedback can retrain the mix, but Facebook does not promise an instant or permanent reset.
What “resetting the Facebook algorithm” actually means
When people ask how to reset Facebook recommendations, they usually want one of three outcomes: remove a persistent topic, stop seeing a particular person or Page without ending the connection, or make the Feed discover different subjects. Facebook’s reviewed help material describes controls for all three goals, but not a one-click command that erases every recommendation preference.

Think of the process as editing the signals Facebook receives from you. Broad settings handle source-level choices, while the controls attached to individual posts let you correct a bad match at the moment you see it. Positive and negative feedback then need to be repeated on future posts. That is a practical retraining process, not a guaranteed clean slate.

Facebook describes its purpose this way in the Help Center: “We care about your experience on Facebook and want to make sure that you see the stories that matter to you most.” The controls below are the available way to express what “matter” means for your Feed.

Start with Feed preferences
Feed preferences is the broad settings area for adjusting relevance. Facebook’s help guidance directs people there when they want to see more of the content that interests them. Menu names and placement can differ between the Facebook website, Android, iPhone, and different account versions, so treat the labels as current guidance rather than a promise that every screen will look identical.
Find Feed preferences
- Open Facebook and open the account menu.
- Choose Settings & privacy.
- Look for Feed preferences. Depending on the client, it may be listed directly in the settings and privacy area rather than inside a deeper submenu.
- Review the people, Pages, groups, or other source-level choices shown there, and adjust the ones that no longer match your interests.
Use this screen as your first pass when the problem is broad—for example, when several sources have become irrelevant. Feed preferences is not a replacement for post-level feedback. A source can remain acceptable overall while one particular story is a poor match, which is why the hide and “show fewer” controls still matter.
Choose the right control for the problem
Each action has a different scope. Selecting the narrowest control that solves the problem avoids changing more of your Feed than intended.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Control | Scope | Relationship impact | When to use it | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hide story | One post | Targets the story rather than ending the connection | A single item is irrelevant, repetitive, or unsuitable | Available as soon as the post appears |
| Show fewer | A person, Page, or group | Reduces that source’s presence without requiring an unfriending action | You want substantially less from a source but do not need to remove the connection | Available from the post menu |
| Unfollow | A person or Page | You stay connected; their posts no longer appear in your Feed | You want to stop Feed posts while preserving the connection | Changes Feed visibility when applied |
| Interested | A post or topic signal | Does not remove a connection | You want more of a subject or style | Immediate feedback on the item shown |
| Not interested | A post or topic signal | Does not remove a connection | You want less of a subject or style | Immediate feedback on the item shown |
| Feed preferences | Broader source and relevance choices | Depends on the setting you change | You need to review several sources or your overall Feed mix | Use whenever you are auditing your settings |
The exact options exposed by a post menu can vary by account and client. If an option is not visible, use the closest available control and check Feed preferences for the broader setting.
Step-by-step: retrain a cluttered Feed
1. Audit the sources you no longer want
Open Feed preferences and identify sources that consistently produce unwanted posts. Separate “I never want this source” from “I only dislike this particular post.” Unfollow is appropriate for a person or Page whose posts you no longer want in the Feed. It changes visibility without requiring you to unfriend the person or otherwise end the connection.
Apply the change to each clearly unwanted person or Page rather than using a broader reaction to solve a narrow problem. If the source is a group, use the group-related option available in the post menu or Feed preferences when shown.
2. Correct bad matches at the post itself
When an unwanted story appears, open its post menu and choose Hide story or the equivalent hide option. Hiding is the fastest way to tell Facebook that this specific item is a poor match. If the same person, Page, or group keeps producing unwanted items, choose Show fewer when that option is offered.

Use the post-level action immediately instead of scrolling past every example. A silent scroll does not communicate the same explicit preference as a hide, “show fewer,” or interest selection.
3. Mark the topics you do want
When a post or topic is genuinely useful, choose Interested if Facebook presents that control. Positive feedback is important: a reset is not only the removal of unwanted material. It also tells Facebook what should replace it.
For a recurring subject you do not want, choose Not interested. Use it for the topic or recommendation itself, not merely because you dislike one headline. If the item comes from a source you otherwise value, combine topic-level feedback with the source-level choice that best fits your intent.
4. Repeat the corrections as the Feed changes
Facebook presents these as ongoing customization controls. Check new posts as they arrive and apply the same signals consistently. One hide or one “Interested” selection should not be treated as a permanent reset; the practical method is to correct the mix repeatedly until it better reflects your current interests.

How to stop seeing a Page without unfriending anyone
If a Page is the problem, you do not need to change a personal relationship. From one of its posts, open the post menu and choose Unfollow if available. Facebook says that unfollowing a person or Page means you will not see that source’s posts in your Feed anymore. The connection itself is preserved, so this is different from unfriending.
If you still want occasional posts from the Page but fewer of them, use Show fewer instead. That is a lighter intervention than removing the source’s Feed visibility entirely. If only one post is unsuitable, hide that story and leave the source setting unchanged.

How to retrain topics rather than sources
Sometimes the source is not the problem. You may still want a Page’s posts, but not a particular recurring subject. In that case, avoid unfollowing the source immediately. Hide the mismatched story and choose Not interested when offered. For subjects you want to see more often, select Interested on good examples.
This distinction matters because source-level and topic-level feedback solve different problems:
- Source problem: the person or Page is no longer useful overall. Use unfollow or show fewer.
- Single-story problem: one item is a bad match. Hide the story.
- Topic problem: the source is acceptable, but the subject is not—or you want more of a subject. Use Not interested or Interested.
Use several clear examples rather than reacting to an ambiguous post. A topic may appear in different formats and from different sources, so keep applying the relevant signal whenever the same unwanted pattern returns.
Do not forget short videos and Reels
Facebook says the Videos tab was renamed the Reels tab in June 2025. Reels can also appear directly in Feed, so short-video recommendations are not isolated from the rest of your Feed experience.

The rename does not create a separate global reset. It changes the label of the video destination, while the feedback approach remains the same.

A practical reset routine
For a heavily cluttered Feed, work in passes so that each action has a clear purpose.
- Broad review: open Feed preferences and remove or reduce sources you already know you do not want.
- Immediate cleanup: as you browse, hide each clearly poor story instead of merely passing it.
- Source reduction: use Show fewer when one person, Page, or group is overrepresented but should not disappear completely.
- Positive calibration: mark strong examples Interested so the Feed receives replacement signals, not only negative ones.
- Topic suppression: mark recurring unwanted subjects Not interested.
- Short-video pass: apply the same process to reels that appear in Feed or in the Reels tab.
- Follow-up: repeat the corrections on subsequent visits; stop only when the current mix is useful enough, not because a timer or reset confirmation appears.
This sequence keeps broad changes in Feed preferences and precise corrections at the post, where they are easiest to apply.

Why the same unwanted posts keep appearing
You have not sent an explicit signal
Scrolling past an item is different from selecting Hide, Show fewer, or Not interested. When a pattern matters, use one of those controls directly.
The source and topic require different actions
Hiding one story may not reduce a source that repeatedly posts similar material. Conversely, unfollowing an entire Page is excessive if only one topic is unsuitable. Match the control to the scope of the problem.
Your feedback is too narrow
A single correction cannot represent every version of a topic. Continue marking examples as they appear, including good examples with Interested, so your preferences are expressed in both directions.
The item is a reel in another Feed location
Because reels can appear in Feed as well as the Reels tab, you may encounter the same type of recommendation in more than one place. Apply the feedback where the item appears instead of assuming that changing the main Feed automatically handles every short-video recommendation.
The interface has changed
Facebook’s public help pages cover multiple clients, and button names or locations can differ by account. If a step does not match your screen, look for the post menu, Feed preferences, or equivalent Interested, Not interested, Hide, Show fewer, and Unfollow controls rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Troubleshooting common reset goals
“I want a completely blank slate.”
There is no documented one-click global reset in the reviewed Facebook help material. Use Feed preferences plus repeated post-level feedback instead. Treat the result as gradual retraining, not deletion of every historical preference.
“I hid a post, but similar posts still appear.”
Hide is scoped to the individual story. If the same source is the recurring issue, choose Show fewer or unfollow that person or Page. If the subject is the issue, use Not interested on additional examples.
“I unfollowed someone and still see related recommendations.”
Unfollow removes that person’s posts from your Feed, but recommendations can involve other sources. Hide the related items and use Not interested for the unwanted topic. Check Feed preferences to confirm the original source-level choice.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“I do not want to unfriend someone.”
Use Unfollow. Facebook specifically describes it as a way to stop seeing a person’s or Page’s posts in your Feed without requiring an unfriending action.
“I cannot find the exact menu label.”
Check the current account menu under Settings & privacy, then search for Feed preferences. On an individual item, open the post’s menu and look for hide, Show fewer, Interested, or Not interested. Labels and placement can vary between the website and mobile clients.
“I only want to fix reels.”
Use the same feedback controls on reels in Feed or in the Reels tab. The June 2025 rename from Videos to Reels does not remove those controls.
How to avoid overcorrecting your Feed
Resetting recommendations is not the same as eliminating every unfamiliar post. Recommendations are useful when they introduce a subject you genuinely want to explore, so reserve Not interested and unfollow for clear mismatches. Use Hide for one-off problems and Show fewer when the source is valuable in small doses.
Likewise, do not unfollow a source merely because one post is poorly timed. The broader action changes all of that person’s or Page’s posts in your Feed. Start with the smallest effective control, then escalate only if the unwanted pattern continues.
Keep positive feedback in the routine. If every action is negative, you are describing what to remove but not what should fill the space. Mark representative posts and topics Interested when they match what you want now.
What you can and cannot expect from retraining
- You can adjust relevance: Feed preferences and explicit post feedback let you change the mix of sources and subjects.
- You can stop a source’s posts: Unfollow removes a person’s or Page’s posts from your Feed while preserving the connection.
- You can correct individual recommendations: Hide and Show fewer act at the story or source level.
- You can express both sides of a preference: Interested requests more of a post or topic; Not interested requests less.
- You should expect variation: Facebook’s public help pages cover multiple clients, so labels and locations may differ by account.
- You should not expect an instant permanent reset: Facebook does not document a global reset button or promise that one action erases all recommendation history.
The most defensible measure of success is practical: after you make the changes, does the Feed contain more of the subjects and sources you currently want and fewer of the ones you rejected? Continue correcting it when the answer changes.
