In Valheim 1.0, the permanent vanilla way to expand your inventory is to buy two pocket upgrades from Haldor. Defeat Moder to unlock Wider Pockets, then defeat The Queen to unlock Deeper Pockets. Each upgrade adds one eight-slot row, taking the standard 32-slot layout to 48 slots. Megingjord is separate: it increases how much weight you can carry, but it does not add inventory squares.

The vanilla upgrades at a glance

The two purchases require 3,000 coins altogether and provide 16 additional slots. They are permanent character upgrades rather than temporary buffs.
How to unlock and buy more inventory slots
1. Find Haldor in the Black Forest
Haldor is the merchant who sells both pocket upgrades. His shop is located in the Black Forest, so explore that biome until you find him. You need to reach the merchant before either upgrade can be purchased.

When you interact with Haldor, his normal shop inventory is the place to look for the pocket item that has become available after the relevant boss defeat. If a purchase is not yet listed, check the boss requirement and your coin balance before assuming the item is missing.
2. Defeat Moder to unlock Wider Pockets
Moder is the unlock requirement for the first row. After Moder has been defeated, return to Haldor and buy Wider Pockets for 1,000 coins. The item adds one eight-slot row to your character’s inventory.
The upgrade solves a space problem: if every inventory square is occupied while you still have carrying-weight headroom, Wider Pockets gives you room for another row of items. It does not make existing items lighter and does not increase the weight limit.
3. Defeat The Queen to unlock Deeper Pockets
The Queen unlocks the second pocket upgrade. Once that boss has been defeated, go back to Haldor and purchase Deeper Pockets for 2,000 coins. It adds another eight-slot row on top of the row from Wider Pockets.
You do not have to buy both upgrades at the same time. You can purchase Wider Pockets after Moder and return for Deeper Pockets later, provided you have defeated The Queen and saved enough coins.

4. Plan for the full 3,000-coin cost
Buying both upgrades means budgeting 3,000 coins in total. PC Gamer (2026) identifies chests, dungeons, monster drops and sales of valuables as coin sources. Rubies, amber and silver necklaces are examples of valuables that can be sold to Haldor.

- Keep saleable valuables in a safe chest instead of accidentally leaving them behind on a resource run.
- If you can afford only one purchase, Wider Pockets is the earlier upgrade because Moder is its unlock boss.
- Reserve enough funds for Deeper Pockets if your goal is the maximum vanilla inventory rather than a short-term purchase.
What the slot counts mean
The starting layout is commonly described in two ways. PC Gamer (2026) counts eight hotbar positions plus 24 inventory positions, for 32 usable slots. Gamers.Wiki describes the standard grid itself as 32 slots. The apparent difference is a matter of which parts of the interface a source labels as the inventory; the practical upgrade result is the same: Wider Pockets adds eight positions and Deeper Pockets adds eight more.
With both rows purchased, the character has 16 more positions than at the start. The upgrades affect storage capacity only. They do not change the size of a stack, the number of items a recipe needs, or the amount of weight an individual item contributes.
This distinction matters on long mining, farming or dungeon trips. A character can run out of squares while remaining under the weight limit, or become encumbered while several squares are still empty. Those are different problems and require different solutions.
Inventory slots and carrying weight are separate
When Megingjord is the right fix
Megingjord increases carrying capacity rather than adding slots. The Valheim GameCore inventory reference lists a base carry weight of 300 and a Megingjord bonus of 150, for a 450-weight limit while the belt is equipped.

Use Megingjord when the warning is caused by weight. For example, if you still have empty squares but cannot move normally because ore, stone or other heavy materials have pushed you over the limit, an extra row will not help. Megingjord addresses that weight ceiling.
When pocket upgrades are the right fix
If the grid is full but your character is not encumbered, buy the pocket upgrades. More weight capacity cannot create an empty square for a new item.
When you need both
Long resource runs can produce both pressures at once. In that case, the two pocket upgrades provide the space and Megingjord provides additional weight headroom. Megingjord occupies the accessory slot, so using it means giving up whatever other accessory you would otherwise equip; decide based on the purpose of the trip.

What persists after death or changing worlds?
Gamers.Wiki reports that purchased pocket rows remain attached to the character after death, logout, reload and world changes. You do not need to repurchase a row every time you return to the game or move between worlds.

Boss progression and character purchases are separate in co-op. A boss defeat sets the relevant progression key for the world, allowing the corresponding item to become available from Haldor. Each character still pays for their own Wider Pockets or Deeper Pockets. A new character does not inherit another character’s purchased rows.

This means a shared server can unlock the merchant item for everyone while each player gathers the coins needed for their own inventory. If a friend joins with a fresh character, that character must buy the upgrades independently.

If you are playing a modded installation, the community mod Megingjord Overhaul offers a different approach. Its Thunderstore listing, version 1.3.0, documents an eight-slot belt inventory row that appears when Megingjord is equipped. It also provides a swappable second hotbar.
The mod listing documents drag-and-drop behavior, persistence across save and load, tombstone handling on death, and portal restrictions for items that cannot normally be teleported. These are mod features, not additions to the vanilla game, and their behavior can change with updates.
- Required game version: Valheim 0.219 or newer.
- Required framework: BepInEx 5.4.2200 or newer.
- Equipment dependency: the additional belt row appears when Megingjord is equipped.
- Compatibility: verify that the mod version, Valheim build and other installed mods match before using it on an important save.
The mod does not replace the vanilla boss unlocks or Haldor purchases; it is an optional community extension with its own compatibility and balance trade-offs. Back up a save before adding or removing it, especially if the extra row contains items.
Troubleshooting the vanilla upgrades
The upgrade is not in Haldor’s shop
- Confirm that Moder has been defeated for Wider Pockets or The Queen for Deeper Pockets.
- Make sure you are checking Haldor’s shop inventory with the character who is meant to receive the upgrade.
- Check that you have enough coins for the specific purchase.
- If you are in co-op, remember that another player’s purchase does not unlock the row on your character automatically.
You found Haldor but cannot afford the item
Search chests and dungeons, collect monster drops and sell valuables such as rubies, amber and silver necklaces. Keep the required coins available before setting out for the merchant so a successful boss progression does not leave you waiting for funds.
The inventory still feels cramped after buying a row
Check whether the remaining problem is weight rather than space. The pocket rows increase the number of positions, but they do not alter the 300 base carry-weight limit. Megingjord’s documented 150-weight bonus is the relevant upgrade when weight is the bottleneck.

Confirm that the installed Megingjord Overhaul version is 1.3.0 or a compatible release, that Valheim is 0.219 or newer, and that BepInEx is 5.4.2200 or newer. Disable conflicting inventory or hotbar mods one at a time, and test with a backed-up save. Portal behavior for non-teleportable items follows the mod’s restrictions, not the vanilla inventory rules.
How to choose an inventory setup for a trip
Short building and crafting sessions
For a nearby build, the standard layout may be sufficient. Carry only the tools and materials you expect to use, and return to a storage chest before both space and weight become limiting. Buying a pocket row is most valuable when repeated trips are costing more time than the coin investment.
Mining and hauling runs
Mining commonly stresses both constraints: heavy materials consume weight quickly, while assorted tools, food and drops consume positions. If the grid fills first, the pocket upgrades are the direct answer. If the weight limit is reached first, Megingjord is more effective. If both happen, equip Megingjord and use the additional rows together.
Boss preparation and exploration
Exploration produces unpredictable loot, so extra positions reduce the number of forced returns to base. Before leaving, decide whether the accessory slot should be dedicated to Megingjord or another effect. The right choice depends on whether the planned route is likely to generate more weight pressure or more distinct item types.

Co-op expeditions
Coordinate purchases rather than assuming a shared upgrade. The world can record the boss defeat for everyone, but each character needs their own coins and merchant transaction. A group can assign one player to haul heavy materials with Megingjord while others prioritize different equipment, provided everyone understands that pocket rows remain character-specific.
The practical answer
For a completely vanilla character, find Haldor in the Black Forest, defeat Moder and buy Wider Pockets, then defeat The Queen and buy Deeper Pockets. Those two permanent purchases add 16 positions to the standard layout. Treat Megingjord as a complementary weight upgrade, not an inventory expansion. If you want still more organization and accept mod dependencies, Megingjord Overhaul supplies an additional belt row while equipped, but it should be treated separately from the supported vanilla progression.
