It combines multiple DRAM dies with through-silicon vias (TSVs) and a 2,048-I/O interface so an AI accelerator or high-performance-computing processor can access memory at far higher rates than conventional memory arrangements. The result is a component that can exceed 2.8TB/s per stack in Micron’s published 12-high example, while Samsung reports up to 3,300GB/s per stack.
Those numbers describe memory bandwidth, not an automatic 2.8TB/s increase in an AI application. A complete system’s performance also depends on the processor, software, data-reuse patterns, thermals, power limits and the number of memory stacks attached. HBM4 is therefore best understood as a specialized memory subsystem for chip designers, not as a consumer RAM upgrade.

What HBM4 is
HBM stands for High Bandwidth Memory. HBM4 is the fourth major generation of this stacked-memory approach. Instead of placing separate DRAM packages around a processor and connecting them through relatively narrow channels, HBM4 stacks DRAM dies vertically. Through-silicon vias, or TSVs, run through the dies to provide dense vertical connections between layers.
The stack is integrated alongside a high-performance processor such as an AI accelerator or an HPC device. The processor does not treat HBM4 as a removable DIMM. It uses the memory through a very wide interface designed into the package and platform. This physical integration is what lets HBM deliver exceptional data movement while keeping the memory close to the compute engines that consume it.

What is physically stacked?
- DRAM dies: Each layer is a memory die. Adding layers increases the amount of storage available in a stack.
- Through-silicon vias: TSVs provide vertical electrical paths between the dies, allowing the layers to operate as one high-bandwidth memory device.
- A wide external interface: Supplier descriptions for HBM4 specify 2,048 I/O pins or terminals. Samsung lists 1,024 for the previous generation, so the HBM4 interface is twice as wide in that comparison.
A wider interface and a higher transfer rate on each pin increase the amount of data that can cross between the processor and memory every second. The exact performance of a finished package still depends on its implementation, signal quality, power and thermal design.
Why AI chips need so much memory bandwidth
AI workloads repeatedly move model weights, activations, gradients and intermediate results between compute units and memory. A processor can contain a large number of arithmetic engines, but those engines cannot stay busy if data arrives too slowly. In that situation, memory traffic becomes the limiting factor rather than the raw number of calculations the chip can perform.
HBM4 addresses that memory-side constraint by providing a very wide path and high transfer rates. More bandwidth can let an accelerator feed more data to its compute units, reduce waiting during memory-heavy operations and support larger or more concurrent data flows. These are system-level benefits: the memory helps remove one bottleneck, but it does not change the work performed by the processor or guarantee a fixed application speedup.

Two specifications are especially easy to confuse:
- Capacity is how much data the stack can hold, normally expressed in gigabytes (GB).
- Bandwidth is how much data can move between the processor and memory in one second, expressed here in gigabytes or terabytes per second.
A stack can have high bandwidth but limited capacity, or more capacity without a proportional increase in bandwidth. Micron’s HBM4 example combines a 12-high stack with 36GB of capacity and bandwidth greater than 2.8TB/s. The 36GB figure tells you how much data can reside in that stack; the 2.8TB/s figure describes the maximum transfer rate claimed for the interface under the supplier’s stated conditions.

AI systems often use several stacks. Total memory capacity and aggregate bandwidth then depend on how many stacks the processor supports and how the package and software distribute traffic. Multiplying one supplier’s per-stack figure by an assumed stack count is not a valid system-performance estimate unless the complete design is known.
How HBM4 differs from HBM3E and HBM3
HBM4 keeps the stacked-DRAM concept used by earlier HBM generations but expands the interface and raises data rates. Samsung’s product information gives 1,024 I/O pins for the prior generation and 2,048 for HBM4. More I/O allows more bits to be transferred in parallel. Suppliers also report higher per-pin speeds, which further raises the bandwidth available from each stack.
The comparison below uses the figures manufacturers have published for their own products or announcements. It is not an independent, controlled HBM3-versus-HBM4 benchmark.

| Aspect | Earlier HBM generations | HBM4 information reported by suppliers |
|---|---|---|
| Interface width | Samsung lists 1,024 I/O pins for the prior generation. | Micron, Samsung and SK hynix descriptions use a 2,048-pin or terminal interface. |
| Data movement | Lower interface width and rates than HBM4 in the cited supplier comparisons. | Published figures range from more than 10Gbps to up to 13Gbps per pin, depending on supplier and product stage. |
| Stack bandwidth | Supplier-specific and generation-specific. | Micron claims more than 2.8TB/s; Samsung claims up to 3,300GB/s (about 3.3TB/s) per stack. |
| Capacity examples | Varies by generation and layer count. | Examples include 24–36GB in Samsung’s 12-layer options, Micron’s 36GB 12-high product and 48GB 16-high customer samples. |
“HBM3E vs HBM3 vs HBM4” is therefore not a single number comparison. Layer count, die density, interface speed, thermal limits, power efficiency and the product’s commercial stage all matter.

Current HBM4 figures from Micron, Samsung and SK hynix
HBM4 specifications are not one universal industry score. The following figures are manufacturer-reported claims, each tied to a particular product, configuration or announcement date.
| Supplier and source date | Published figure | Configuration or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Micron, current HBM4 product page (2026 listings) | More than 2.8TB/s per stack; more than 11.0Gbps operation; 2,048-pin bus | 36GB 12-high product listed; 48GB 16-high customer samples listed |
| Samsung Semiconductor, current HBM4 product page | Up to 3,300GB/s per stack; approximately 2.7 times the performance of previous generations | “Up to” product-page claim; the page’s figure is not an independent benchmark |
| Samsung Electronics, commercial shipment announcement | 11.7Gbps consistent transfer speed; up to 13Gbps; up to 3.3TB/s per stack | 12-layer options of 24–36GB; Samsung said 16-layer stacking could expand offerings to 48GB |
| SK hynix, September 12, 2025 announcement | More than 10Gbps; 8Gbps JEDEC standard operating speed as characterized by SK hynix | Development completed and preparation for mass production announced; the 8Gbps reference is attributed to SK hynix’s announcement |
| SK hynix, March 19, 2025 customer-sample announcement | More than 2TB/s per stack; 36GB | 12-layer samples; customer certification and production preparation, not a general consumer listing |
These values can differ without being contradictory. A 12-layer sample, a 16-layer customer sample and a product-page maximum are different configurations and stages. “Up to” describes a ceiling rather than a guaranteed rate in every system, while a sample announcement does not mean that every customer can buy the same part immediately.
How to read an HBM4 specification sheet
1. Identify who made the claim
Start with the supplier and the exact publication. Micron’s more-than-2.8TB/s statement, Samsung’s 3,300GB/s statement and SK hynix’s more-than-2TB/s sample figure are each claims about that company’s implementation. They should not be presented as a common measurement.

2. Check the date and product stage
A current product page, a customer-sample release and a commercial-shipment announcement describe different levels of availability. Samsung’s announcement is evidence for the commercial shipments it described. SK hynix’s March 2025 release described samples and customer certification; its September 2025 release described completed development and mass-production preparation.

3. Match the configuration
Record the number of layers, capacity per stack, data rate per pin and bandwidth per stack. A 36GB 12-high part cannot be compared directly with a 48GB 16-high sample as if capacity and bandwidth were identical. Also check whether the number is per stack or for an entire accelerator.
4. Separate data rate from aggregate bandwidth
Gbps per pin is a transfer rate for an individual signal path. GB/s or TB/s per stack is an aggregate bandwidth figure across the full interface. The two measurements are related, but they are not interchangeable. A claim of 11.7Gbps per pin does not mean the chip has 11.7GB/s of total memory bandwidth.
5. Look for efficiency and thermal information
Peak bandwidth is only one design constraint. Compare power efficiency, heat dissipation and thermal behavior when those data are available. A processor must be able to keep the memory within its operating limits; otherwise, a theoretical bandwidth advantage may not be sustained.

How HBM differs from traditional DRAM
Traditional DRAM is commonly supplied as separate memory packages or modules connected through a comparatively narrower memory interface. HBM instead combines multiple DRAM dies into a vertical stack, links them with TSVs and places that stack next to a high-performance processor. The architecture prioritizes very wide, short, parallel connections and high throughput.
Best Value
That distinction changes the integration model. A desktop user can usually add or replace conventional memory modules if the motherboard supports them. HBM4 is selected by the processor and package designer, and the memory is integrated into the accelerator platform. It is not a drop-in replacement for system RAM, nor is it a practical upgrade for a standard consumer computer.
What HBM4 can—and cannot—tell you about AI performance
Bandwidth is most valuable when the workload is limited by memory traffic. If an AI model repeatedly fetches data and the accelerator’s compute units are waiting, additional bandwidth can improve utilization. If the workload is limited by arithmetic throughput, communication overhead, software scheduling or thermal throttling, more memory bandwidth may have a smaller effect.
End-to-end performance also depends on model size, batch size, precision, sparsity, cache behavior, interconnects, memory capacity and the way the software partitions work across stacks. Consequently, a supplier’s per-stack number cannot be converted into a universal percentage improvement for training or inference. A responsible comparison names the complete accelerator, workload, software and test method—or limits the statement to the memory component’s published bandwidth.

Manufacturers describe HBM4 as a key memory technology for AI and high-performance computing. SK hynix’s Head of HBM Development, Joohwan Cho, called completion of HBM4 development “a new milestone for the industry” in the company’s September 12, 2025 announcement. The same release quoted Justin Kim, President and Head of AI Infra, saying the company would “grow into a full-stack AI memory provider” by supplying products with the quality and performance required for AI systems.
Samsung’s shipment announcement quoted Sang Joon Hwang, Executive Vice President and Head of Memory Development, explaining that Samsung adopted advanced 1c DRAM and a 4nm logic process for HBM4 rather than relying only on existing designs. Samsung also described discussions with GPU manufacturers and hyperscalers and plans to broaden technical partnerships. Those comments indicate supplier and customer activity; they do not establish that every accelerator platform uses HBM4 or that all announced capacities are generally available.
Questions to ask before comparing HBM4 products
- Is the number bandwidth per stack or total bandwidth for a processor?
- How many layers and how many gigabytes does the stack contain?
- Is the transfer rate a sustained figure, a maximum, or a product-page “up to” value?
- Was the part sampled, certified by a customer, announced for shipment or offered in volume?
- What power and thermal conditions apply?
- Are all suppliers being compared on the same axes and publication dates?
- Is there an independent benchmark, or are the figures solely manufacturer claims?
At present, the cited supplier materials do not provide one common independent multi-vendor benchmark. Comparisons should therefore remain explicitly attributed and configuration-aware.
