Generally, don’t use a household vacuum to remove dust from inside a computer. Dell warns against using a vacuum or blower for computer cleaning because of static concerns and recommends canned compressed air for vents. HP also recommends compressed air for cooling vents, while allowing a small brush vacuum only for keyboard debris. These are manufacturer instructions for specific tasks—not a universal cleaning procedure for every computer.
Why dust inside a computer matters
Dust and debris can collect on vents and fan blades, restrict airflow, and contribute to overheating. Dell notes that overheating can slow performance. That makes cleaning useful when dust is visibly obstructing airflow, but it does not make every removal method appropriate for internal parts.

Prepare the computer before cleaning
- Shut it down. Do not clean a computer while it is on.
- Unplug it and disconnect cables and devices. Dell says to disconnect them before cleaning; Apple also advises shutting down and unplugging a Mac before cleaning its exterior.
- Keep liquid away from openings. Do not spray liquid directly onto a device. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for any cleaning of surfaces.
- Check the model-specific manual. General manufacturer pages do not set one procedure for every model, including whether an access panel may be opened or how compressed air should be applied.
Clean vents without assuming one procedure fits every computer
Dell and HP recommend canned compressed air for the vent-cleaning tasks covered by their support pages. Use the product only as directed by your computer’s manufacturer and the air-can instructions. The general guidance cited here does not establish a universal angle, distance, duration, or disassembly method, so don’t guess or treat instructions for one model as instructions for another.

If dust is still inside the case, access requires disassembly, or you are unsure how to proceed, consult the model-specific service manual or a qualified repair service. The general cleaning pages do not provide universal internal-disassembly steps.

Keyboard debris
HP’s limited allowance for a small brush vacuum applies to keyboard debris on HP PCs. It does not extend to the computer’s internal components. HP also describes compressed air for particles between keys; check the relevant device instructions before choosing a method.

Exterior and screen care
Cleaning directions depend on the surface and device. For Macs, Apple recommends a soft, lint-free cloth for the exterior and water-only cloth care for Mac laptop screens. Avoid moisture in openings, and do not spray liquid directly on the device. For another computer or screen, follow that manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming Apple’s directions apply.
