Do not count a throttled metrics poll as a clean delivery window. Track webhook delivery, API polling, and alert delivery as separate health signals; mark a polling window complete only after every required request and page succeeds and its result is durably recorded. If a poll returns 429, retain the last successful checkpoint and retry according to that API’s documented guidance.
Separate webhook delivery from metrics polling
A webhook failure means the marketplace could not successfully deliver a notification to your callback, or your receiver did not complete its acknowledgment. A polling failure means your monitor could not retrieve or record an observation. Those are different events and need different counters, alerts, and recovery actions.

In particular, a 429 is a throttling response in Walmart’s subscription setup guidance, not evidence that the marketplace delivered an event unsuccessfully. Treat it as an unavailable observation: preserve the most recent completed window and do not report zero delivery errors for the interval you could not measure. Walmart’s subscription instructions say to apply backoff and retry later for 429 responses.

| Signal | What it tells you | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Webhook delivery failure | A notification attempt did not receive the expected successful response, or delivery otherwise failed. | Platform, endpoint class, delivery identifier when available, response status, attempt context, and receiver outcome. |
| Poll throttling | A metrics request was rejected or limited; the intended observation was not obtained. | Marketplace and operation, response status, retry timing if supplied, and the last completed checkpoint. |
| Transport or timeout failure | The request did not produce a usable response. | Request/operation, timeout or transport detail, and whether any page or result was already persisted. |
| Incomplete or invalid observation | Pagination, parsing, schema validation, or durable storage did not finish successfully. | Failure stage, page or record context, and whether the checkpoint remained unchanged. |
| Alert delivery failure | Your notification channel did not deliver the monitor’s alert. | Alert destination, attempted time, delivery result, and escalation state. |
This separation is an observability design recommendation, not a universal marketplace status taxonomy. It prevents a broken monitor from making marketplace delivery look healthy.

Define when a polling window is complete
A window is complete only after the API request succeeds, every required page has been retrieved, the response has been validated, and the result has been durably recorded. Advance the checkpoint only at that point. This lets the next run distinguish “no failures observed” from “no valid observation obtained.”
- Start from the last completed checkpoint. Store the checkpoint alongside the marketplace and operation so a failed run cannot silently move the reporting boundary.
- Fetch and validate all required pages. A successful first response is not a complete sample if later pages are missing, or if the response cannot be parsed or validated.
- Persist the observation before advancing the checkpoint. If persistence fails, leave the checkpoint unchanged and surface a checkpoint or storage failure rather than a healthy interval.
- On 429, keep the checkpoint and retry later. Honor a documented
Retry-Afterheader if the API returns one. If it does not, follow that API’s documented rate-limit guidance and use a bounded retry strategy; do not assume every marketplace returns that header. - On other failures, preserve the same distinction. A timeout, incomplete pagination, parse error, or storage failure also means the window is not complete, but each should retain its own failure class for diagnosis.
Do not confuse rate-limit headers with retry instructions. For the specific Amazon Selling Partner API createUnexpectedProblem operation, the reference says x-amzn-RateLimit-Limit contains the usage-plan limit when available. It does not establish that every operation exposes that header or that it provides a retry time. The operation reference lists a default rate of 1 request per second and a burst of 5 for that operation only; do not apply those values to other operations.

Accept webhooks durably, then process them asynchronously
Webhook acknowledgment and webhook processing are separate steps. Walmart recommends that a callback return 2xx after a durable write, then handle longer-running work asynchronously. Its performance webhook documentation says it retries when the endpoint does not return 2xx. A receiver should therefore persist enough information to recover work before acknowledging, rather than return success while the event exists only in volatile memory. See Walmart’s delivery-health guidance and performance webhook documentation.
- Receive and validate. Verify the request and capture the payload and relevant delivery identifier, such as
eventIdwhere present. - Write durably. Store the event or a durable work record before returning success. Keep identifiers and detailed exception context in logs or traces for troubleshooting.
- Acknowledge according to the platform contract. For Walmart, return 2xx after the durable write; do not wait for long downstream processing to finish.
- Process asynchronously and record the outcome. Keep receipt, processing, and any downstream failure distinguishable so a received event is not mistaken for a fully processed one.
Walmart’s performance webhooks are documented for sellers listing on Walmart marketplaces in the United States. The documentation describes HTTP POST notifications, with payload.notificationType identifying the notification type. It lists activity-triggered ALARMS and a weekly REPORT at Monday 5:00 AM Pacific Time; those details are specific to that product and market scope.

Keep retry schedules platform-specific
Retries are not interchangeable across marketplaces. Shopify documents up to eight retries of failed webhook calls within four hours and says a subscription may be removed if failures persist. Walmart’s cited performance-webhook overview says it retries on non-2xx responses but does not specify the same schedule there. Use each platform’s own delivery contract rather than copying one retry count or time window across integrations.
| Platform and source scope | Documented behavior | Monitoring implication |
|---|---|---|
| Walmart Marketplace performance webhooks | HTTP POST notifications; endpoint should return 2xx on success; retries occur on non-2xx. The cited overview does not specify a retry schedule. US marketplace seller scope. | Track endpoint response and delivery health; do not infer an attempt schedule that the cited documentation does not state. Source |
| Shopify webhooks | Up to eight failed-call retries within four hours; persistent failures may result in subscription removal. | Watch retry history and subscription state using Shopify-specific behavior. Its developer dashboard can show delivery counts and response times. Source |

Alert on states that need different responses
Build alerts around operational consequences, not one generic “error” total. A webhook endpoint outage calls for receiver recovery; repeated 429s call for poll scheduling or rate-limit investigation; an alert-channel failure calls for an alternate notification route. Set thresholds to fit your own service objectives and volume rather than treating any single value as a marketplace-wide rule.

- Webhook delivery: alert on sustained non-2xx responses, repeated delivery failures, or evidence that a subscription needs attention.
- Polling: alert when a window remains incomplete beyond your acceptable freshness interval, when 429s continue after bounded retries, or when pagination repeatedly fails.
- Data integrity: alert when parsing, schema validation, durable writes, or checkpoint advancement fail.
- Notification path: monitor whether the alert itself was delivered and escalate if the primary notification channel is unavailable.
Use bounded metric labels such as marketplace, endpoint class, failure class, and deployment region. Keep event IDs, raw response details, and exception text in logs or traces instead of adding high-cardinality identifiers to metric labels. This is a sound observability design choice, not a vendor-mandated rule established by the platform documentation.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot from the failure boundary
- Check whether the alert is itself delivered. If not, restore the notification path or its escalation route before assuming the marketplace monitor is silent.
- Inspect polling state separately from webhook state. If the latest window is incomplete or throttled, show the last successful observation time and the poll failure class; do not render the interval as zero failures.
- For a webhook issue, verify subscription and endpoint health. Walmart recommends confirming the subscription, using sandbox test delivery, logging an identifier such as
eventId, and reviewing failure emails and endpoint health. Its cited guidance says failure email goes to administrator addresses. See Walmart troubleshooting and delivery health. - Match retry expectations to the platform. Check the applicable platform documentation for response requirements and retry behavior; do not assume another marketplace’s schedule applies.
- Verify the checkpoint only moved after a complete durable observation. If it advanced after a 429, a missing page, or a failed write, correct the monitor state so the affected interval is retried or explicitly marked incomplete.
