If V Rising keeps using old settings, the usual cause is that the server is reading a different file than the one you edited, an override is taking precedence, or the process was not fully restarted. Stop the server, identify its active -persistentDataPath, edit the matching files in that path, check for save-folder and command-line overrides, validate the JSON, and start the server again. A small group of world-creation settings will not update on an existing world even when the file is correct.

How V Rising chooses the settings it uses
A dedicated V Rising server loads Stunlock Studios’ shipped defaults first and then looks for local override files. The effective configuration is therefore not necessarily the file you last opened in the game installation directory. The server combines defaults with files in its persistent-data location, and more specific copies can override a base configuration.

Stunlock describes this behavior as loading the default files and then looking for local overrides. That design explains why editing a template under the installation directory can appear to do nothing: it may be a shipped default, while the running server is using a persistent copy elsewhere. Updates can also replace files inside the installation directory, so durable changes belong in the persistent settings location.
First identify which kind of server you are changing
Private or LAN world hosted from the game client
A private or LAN world runs inside the V Rising game client. Its settings are managed through the in-game hosting flow and the world’s local data rather than through a separate VRisingServer.exe process. If you are changing a dedicated-server JSON file while launching a world from the client, that file is not the active configuration.

Dedicated server
A dedicated server runs VRisingServer.exe, usually from a shortcut, batch file, Steam tool installation, or a hosting panel. The two principal JSON files are ServerHostSettings.json for infrastructure and administration and ServerGameSettings.json for gameplay rules. The rest of this guide assumes this model.
Find the active persistent-data path
The path is the most common source of a “settings not changing” report. Open the command used to start the dedicated server and look for -persistentDataPath.

The server reads its Settings directory and writes its Saves directory beneath the path supplied by that parameter. For example, a command containing -persistentDataPath .save-data normally uses:
save-dataSettingsServerHostSettings.jsonsave-dataSettingsServerGameSettings.jsonsave-dataSavesfor world save data
The path is relative to the server’s working directory unless the command supplies an absolute path. Multiple servers on one machine should have different persistent paths so that their settings and saves cannot be mixed. Stunlock specifically recommends customizing this location for separated server instances.
When no persistent path is specified
On Windows, the usual default is %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServer. Look for the Settings folder beneath that location. A typical layout is:

Do not assume the directory containing VRisingServer.exe is the data directory. The startup command determines where persistent data is read and written.

How to inspect a startup command
- Stop the server so the command is not launching a second instance.
- Open the batch file, shortcut properties, scheduled task, or hosting-panel startup field used to launch it.
- Record every path and option, especially
-persistentDataPath,-saveName,-serverName,-gamePort, and-queryPort. - Resolve relative paths from the process working directory, then open that location’s
Settingsfolder.
If a panel hides the command line, use the panel’s startup or launch-settings page and its file manager. The panel may expose a different path from the one shown in your local game installation.
Know which file controls the setting

Editing a gameplay key in ServerHostSettings.json, or a port in ServerGameSettings.json, will not change the intended behavior because each key belongs to a different configuration file.
Apply a change safely, step by step
- Stop the server completely. Use the panel’s Stop button or close the dedicated-server process. Do not edit while the process is writing a save or configuration file.
- Back up the active files. Copy the entire persistent-data directory, or at minimum the
Settingsfolder and the selected save folder, to a dated backup location. Keep the original filenames in the backup so you can restore them without guessing. - Open the active settings directory. Use the path found from
-persistentDataPath, or the Windows default if that parameter is absent. Do not rely only onVRisingServer_DataStreamingAssetsSettings; those are shipped defaults and may be overwritten by updates. - Edit the correct JSON file. Put host, port, password, save, listing, or player-limit changes in
ServerHostSettings.json. Put rates, PvP, castle, servant, loot, resource, and raid rules inServerGameSettings.json. - Preserve JSON syntax. Keep property names in double quotes, separate properties with commas, and use matching braces. Do not add comments, trailing commas, or typographic quotation marks.
- Save the file in plain text. Make sure the editor has not appended an extra extension such as
.txt. The filename must remain exactlyServerHostSettings.jsonorServerGameSettings.json. - Check for a more specific copy. Before restarting, inspect the selected save folder for another file with the same name. Back it up, then edit or remove the conflicting copy if it contains the old value.
- Review the launch command. A command-line value can replace a corresponding host setting. Check
-serverName,-gamePort,-queryPort,-saveName, and-persistentDataPath. - Start the server again. Configuration changes are read during startup; leaving the process running will not reload the JSON.
- Verify the result in the running world. Check the actual port, server name, rule, rate, or limit rather than assuming that a panel display reflects the file the process opened.
Overrides that can make the old value win
Save-folder settings
A ServerHostSettings.json or ServerGameSettings.json inside the selected save folder can override the corresponding file in the base Settings directory. This is especially easy to miss when -saveName points to a world different from the one you are browsing. Back up the save folder first. Then compare both copies and keep the desired value in the copy that the server actually loads. Removing a file without a backup can discard a working configuration.
Command-line host overrides
Launch parameters take precedence over matching host-file values. If the batch file contains -serverName MyServer, changing the ServerName property in JSON will not change the advertised name until the parameter is edited or removed. The same applies to -gamePort, -queryPort, -saveName, and -persistentDataPath. Treat the startup command as part of the configuration, not as a separate convenience setting.

Presets and difficulty selections
A GameSettingsPreset or difficulty preset can set a group of gameplay keys. When a preset controls a key, changing that individual key may be overwritten when the preset is applied or when the world starts. Use the custom-preset or equivalent custom configuration route when you need individual values, and then confirm that the resulting JSON contains those values.
Multiple server instances
Two instances that share a persistent path can appear to overwrite one another. Give every server its own -persistentDataPath, save name, game port, and query port. Start only the intended instance while testing a change; otherwise you may be watching one process while editing the files used by another.
Validate malformed JSON before blaming the server
A missing comma, brace, or quote can make a settings file unreadable. The server may fall back to defaults, ignore the malformed override, or leave the Continue-game interface unable to load correctly. Stunlock has noted that malformed settings can break the UI and that clearer feedback is being developed.
Quick validation checklist
- The file begins with
{and ends with}. - Every key and string value uses straight double quotes.
- Each property except the final one ends with a comma.
- Numbers are unquoted when the game expects numbers; Boolean values are lowercase
trueorfalse. - No comments, smart quotes, or trailing commas were introduced.
- The file remains valid UTF-8/plain text and keeps the
.jsonextension.
Use a trusted JSON parser or your editor’s JSON validation feature. If validation fails and you cannot identify the typo, replace the file with the known-good backup, restart, and reapply one change at a time. Do not copy a damaged file into every server instance.
Restart fully and verify what loaded
V Rising does not continuously monitor these files for changes. A full shutdown and startup is required after configuration edits. On managed hosting, use the provider’s restart control rather than only refreshing the web panel; some panels apply file edits only during a restart.

After startup, inspect the server console or log output for the selected save and data path, warnings about settings, and the ports being bound. If the log identifies a different path from the one you edited, correct the path first. Keep a copy of the edited file and record the time of the restart so you can correlate a behavior change with a specific configuration.

Some values are tied to world creation. The V Rising Wiki’s dedicated-server reference, last modified May 13, 2025, lists the following settings as potentially not updating after a world already exists, even after a correct edit and restart:

This is different from an incorrect path or bad JSON: the server can load the file successfully and still preserve the world’s original value. The documented workaround is to create a custom preset or a new server/world with the desired values, but the reference explicitly labels that workaround as not fully tested.
Use a new world only as a last resort
- Back up the current
Savesdirectory and both settings files. - Confirm that the target key is one of the world-creation-limited settings above.
- Test the desired custom preset on a separate test world first.
- Create a new world only if losing the existing world’s progression is acceptable.
Do not delete or overwrite the existing save while experimenting. A new world is a recovery choice, not the first response to a setting that appears stale.
Recover from a corrupted settings file
Stunlock advises making a backup before editing. If a global installation settings file is corrupted, move or rename it and run Steam’s Verify Integrity of Game Files. Verification can restore files that belong to the installation, but it cannot regenerate a settings file stored inside a save folder. For a save-folder copy, restore your backup or repair the JSON manually.
Recovery sequence
- Stop the server and copy the complete data directory before changing anything.
- Identify whether the damaged file is in the installation defaults, the persistent
Settingsfolder, or the selected save folder. - For an installation-level file, rename it and run Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- For a persistent or save-folder file, restore the last valid backup or replace it with a syntactically valid version.
- Start the server and inspect logs before making additional edits.
Verification is not a substitute for backups: it does not know which custom values you intended, and it does not repair every copy the server may use.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting for persistent settings
If local overrides repeatedly disappear, the issue may be the hosting workflow rather than the JSON itself. Evaluate a hosting arrangement against the operational controls below instead of choosing solely on advertised player slots.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The server name or port is unchanged
- Check the active
-persistentDataPath. - Search the startup command for
-serverName,-gamePort, or-queryPort. - Confirm that you edited
ServerHostSettings.json, not the gameplay file. - Stop and restart the process, then verify the bound port and advertised name in logs or the server browser.
Rates, PvP, or castle rules are unchanged
- Confirm the key is in
ServerGameSettings.json. - Check the selected save folder for a second game-settings file.
- Look for a
GameSettingsPresetor difficulty selection controlling that key. - Determine whether the setting is one of the world-creation-limited values.
The file looks right, but the Continue-game screen fails
- Stop the server and run the file through a JSON validator.
- Look for a missing comma, unmatched brace, smart quote, or trailing comma.
- Restore the last valid backup if validation still fails.
- After repair, restart and check logs for a parse warning.
Changes vanish after an update
- Check whether you edited
VRisingServer_DataStreamingAssetsSettings, which contains shipped defaults. - Move custom values into the persistent
Settingsdirectory. - Back up the persistent directory before future updates.
One server changes while another does not
- Compare each startup command’s
-persistentDataPathand-saveName. - Confirm that game and query ports are unique.
- Stop both processes, assign separate data paths, then test one instance at a time.
What to record before asking for help
A reproducible report is much easier to solve than “the settings do not work.” Record the server type, the exact startup command with passwords removed, the active persistent path, the file path edited, the key and old/new values, whether a save-folder copy exists, the preset in use, the restart time, and any startup error. Include a backup of the relevant JSON with credentials redacted. This evidence distinguishes a path problem from a preset override, malformed JSON, or a world-creation limitation.
There is no authoritative published percentage for how often V Rising settings fail to apply. The practical diagnosis is therefore path-and-override based: establish what process is running, which persistent path it selected, which file has precedence, whether the JSON parses, and whether the world can accept the change at all.
