Nextcloud upgrades are sequential: update the current major release to its latest point release, then move one major release at a time, allowing background migrations to finish after each step.

The commands in this guide assume a conventional archive installation on Linux. Snap, Docker, virtual-machine images and distribution packages have their own update workflow. In every deployment, the web process and the occ command-line tool must use the same supported PHP runtime, and third-party apps must pass compatibility checks before they are enabled again.

Why PHP and Nextcloud must be upgraded together
Nextcloud supports a defined set of PHP branches for each server release. A PHP version that works with one Nextcloud major release may be rejected by the next release, while an older Nextcloud release may not run on a newer PHP branch at all. PHP itself also stops receiving security fixes after a branch reaches end of life. Staying on a deprecated branch restricts the syntax and dependencies available to Nextcloud and its apps, and newer PHP releases can improve execution speed.
Do not choose a PHP version by looking only at the version currently installed. First record the Nextcloud release, then consult the project’s maintained PHP matrix. The current system-requirements documentation lists PHP 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5, with PHP 8.5 recommended for the current release line; the matrix remains the authority when you are operating an older branch.

Identify your release and installation method
Find the exact Nextcloud release
In the web interface, open the Administration area and view the overview page. From a shell, change to the Nextcloud installation directory and run:
sudo -u www-data php occ status
Record the major and point release shown. The major number is the first number in a version such as 32.0.4. Also record the PHP version reported by the Administration overview and by the CLI command:
php -v
If those two PHP versions differ, stop and correct the runtime selection before upgrading. A successful CLI test does not prove that Apache or PHP-FPM is using the same binary.
Confirm how Nextcloud was installed
- Archive installation: you downloaded and extracted a Nextcloud archive into a web-server directory, with
config/config.phpand a separate data directory. - Snap: the service is managed by the Snap system and is updated through Snap’s Nextcloud commands.
- Docker or another container: PHP is part of the image; changing the host PHP package does not change the container runtime.
- Pre-built virtual machine: the appliance publisher supplies the supported update process.
- Distribution package: the operating system’s package maintainer controls the application and PHP integration.
This article’s archive procedure should not be applied verbatim to the other methods. Use the updater and backup procedure supplied by the distribution point, while retaining the same release, compatibility and recovery principles.
PHP compatibility matrix
The following values come from the Nextcloud project’s PHP-version matrix, edited 1 September 2026. A range such as 8.2–8.5 means every minor branch from 8.2 through 8.5, not an untested future release.

For example, moving a Nextcloud 32 server directly to PHP 8.5 is outside the matrix. Upgrade Nextcloud one major release at a time until the installed release supports PHP 8.5, or select an interim PHP branch that both the current and immediate target releases support.
Choose a safe upgrade path
When the target PHP is already supported
If your current Nextcloud release and the immediate target release both list the desired PHP branch, you can change PHP during the same maintenance window. Keeping one runtime across the boundary reduces the number of moving parts, but it does not remove the need for backups, app checks or sequential Nextcloud upgrades.
When the target PHP is not supported
- Bring the installed Nextcloud major release to its latest point release.
- Upgrade to the next major release only; never skip a major number.
- Run the scheduled background work and wait for migrations to complete.
- Repeat the point-release, major-release and migration cycle until the release supports your intended PHP branch.
The upgrade manual gives two or three cron.php runs as an example of the background work that should be allowed to complete. Large databases can take considerably longer, so judge completion from the job results and the Administration checks rather than from elapsed time alone.
Prepare a restorable backup and the app list
Make a fresh backup immediately before every Nextcloud upgrade and before a PHP change that will be performed separately. It must be restorable, not merely a copy whose contents have never been tested. Include all three of these items:
- The Nextcloud database, exported with the database engine’s native backup tool.
- The complete Nextcloud data directory, including user files and file-cache metadata.
config/config.php, which contains the instance settings and database connection details.
Review the critical changes for the release you are about to install. Inventory every third-party app and theme, check its compatibility with both the target Nextcloud release and PHP branch, and disable third-party apps before the change. Re-enable each one only after the core upgrade and functional checks have passed. Core apps should remain available unless the release instructions say otherwise.

Put an archive installation into maintenance mode
The built-in web updater enables maintenance mode automatically. A manual PHP change or archive upgrade should enable it explicitly as the HTTP user:
sudo -E -u www-data php occ maintenance:mode --on
Maintenance mode locks sessions belonging to logged-in users and prevents new logins. Keep it on while PHP is replaced and while the Nextcloud upgrade runs. Do not leave it enabled as a substitute for fixing an error.
Change PHP without mixing runtimes
Install the supported branch and extensions
Use your operating system, hosting panel or deployment tooling to install or enable a PHP branch listed for both the current release and the immediate target release. The exact package command differs between Linux distributions and is intentionally not prescribed here. Keep the extensions required by your installation, including the database driver, XML, multibyte-string, archive, GD or image-processing components and the extensions required by enabled apps.
Update the web integration
Apache may load PHP through mod_php; nginx normally passes requests to PHP-FPM. Point the web server at the new PHP-FPM pool or module, then restart the relevant service using the normal service procedure for your operating system. Do not remove the old runtime until the new one has been verified and a rollback by package selection is no longer needed.

Run php -v as the account that will execute occ, and confirm the Administration overview reports the same branch. If the shell resolves a different binary, use the deployment’s configured PHP path when invoking occ; otherwise maintenance commands may run under an unsupported interpreter while web requests use another one.

Run the Nextcloud upgrade
Built-in updater
For most archive-based environments, the built-in updater is the easiest route. Start it only after the backup, app review and PHP checks are complete. Follow the updater’s prompts, keep the maintenance window open, and do not refresh repeatedly when a migration is still running. If the updater reports a PHP timeout or stops before completion, use the recovery procedure below rather than starting a second web upgrade.
Manual archive replacement
Use manual replacement when your environment requires explicit control over files, services or the CLI. Perform these actions in order:
- Download the target Nextcloud archive outside the current installation directory and verify its integrity using the project’s published checksum or signature.
- Confirm that the backup is complete, then enable maintenance mode.
- Stop the web server and the Nextcloud cron job so no request or background task writes to the tree while files are replaced.
- Move the existing application code aside and extract the new release into the installation path. Preserve
config/config.phpand the entire data directory; do not overwrite either with files from a fresh archive. - Restore the owner and permissions expected by the web user and ensure the web server can read the code while the data directory remains protected from direct web access.
- Restart the web server or PHP-FPM service.
- From inside the Nextcloud installation directory, run:
sudo -u www-data php occ upgrade
Run the command once for the release currently being installed and wait for it to finish. Re-enable the cron job after the command completes. If the release hop is part of a longer sequence, do not start the next hop until migrations and verification are complete.

Finish migrations and repair checks
After every major release, allow background jobs to run. Trigger the scheduled job manually if your deployment does not run cron promptly, using the same PHP binary and web-user account configured for the installation. Two or three cron.php runs are the manual’s example; continue until the job queue and Administration warnings settle.
If the Administration setup check requests database work, the following commands can be run from the installation directory:
sudo -u www-data php occ db:add-missing-columnssudo -u www-data php occ db:add-missing-indicessudo -u www-data php occ db:add-missing-primary-keys
Use --dry-run with these commands when you want to preview the SQL before applying it. Run only the checks requested by the installation and retain the database backup while repairs are being performed.
Verify the service before reopening it
Carry out the checks in this order while maintenance mode is still enabled, then turn it off only when the results are clean:

- Confirm the displayed Nextcloud version is the intended point release.
- Confirm the PHP version in the Administration overview and the CLI output.
- Check database and storage health in the Administration area.
- Confirm that cron is executing and that background jobs are not accumulating errors.
- Open a test account session, browse folders, upload a small file and download it again.
- Check core apps, then re-enable third-party apps one at a time and test each app’s principal function.
- Review the web-server and PHP-FPM logs for fatal errors, missing extensions, permission failures and repeated application exceptions.
When the checks pass, disable maintenance mode:
sudo -E -u www-data php occ maintenance:mode --off
Test a fresh login from a private browser window and verify that normal users can access files and the applications they need.
How the installation method changes the procedure

If the upgrade stalls or leaves maintenance mode enabled
A web upgrade can stop because a PHP timeout ends the browser request even though the server-side operation needs more time. If the page remains stuck, open a shell on the server, keep a backup of the current state, and follow this recovery sequence:
- Check whether the upgrade process is still running before launching another one.
- If it has stopped, turn maintenance mode off only when you are ready to run the command-line recovery, using
sudo -E -u www-data php occ maintenance:mode --off. - From the installation directory, run
sudo -u www-data php occ upgrademanually and capture its complete output. - If the command reports that a repair is required, run
sudo -u www-data php occ maintenance:repair, then retry the upgrade once. - Repeat the migration and verification checks before allowing users back in.
If the command-line upgrade reports a schema or file error, stop and preserve the logs and database state. Continuing to replace files blindly can make recovery harder.
Never downgrade the existing installation
Nextcloud states that downgrading is unsupported and risks corrupting data. Do not install an older code archive over a database that has already been upgraded, and do not attempt to reverse migrations by hand.
For a failed upgrade that cannot be repaired, build a fresh installation at the desired supported version and restore the database, data directory and configuration from a known-good backup. Verify the restored copy in an isolated maintenance window before directing users to it.

When paid support is worth considering
For an organisation-critical deployment, Nextcloud’s premium or enterprise support is an option when you need a defined support commitment rather than a self-managed upgrade. The current requirements documentation describes five years of long-term support covering high and critical security issues, data-loss fixes and regressions. Availability and terms vary by geography and offer, so confirm the current package directly with Nextcloud before purchase.
