How to Stop Live Activities From Draining Your iPhone Battery

Disable Live Activities per app, then use iPhone Battery settings to verify whether they were contributing to the drain. Learn when Low Power Mode helps and what the Battery screen can reveal.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn off Live Activities for the specific app that is displaying them: open Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities, then switch off the control. Afterward, use Settings > Battery to check whether that app was actually using an unusual amount of power. Apple does not publish a Live Activities-specific savings percentage, so disabling the feature is a targeted test rather than a guaranteed battery-life cure.

What the setting changes

Live Activities are ongoing updates displayed by supported apps, such as an order in progress, a sports score, or directions. The setting is controlled per app, not through one universal switch that disables every app at once. Turning it off prevents that app’s Live Activities from appearing while leaving other apps’ activities unchanged.

Apple documents the same per-app Live Activities settings for iPhone and CarPlay. If an app does not show a Live Activities item in its settings, do not assume that another notification or Background App Refresh switch is an equivalent control; the documented option is available only where the app and software provide it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn off Live Activities for one app

  1. Identify the app. Look at the Live Activity on your Lock Screen, Dynamic Island, Home Screen or CarPlay display and note which app owns it. If several activities are active, start with the app associated with the battery concern.
  2. Open the app’s settings. Go to Settings > Apps, then select the app.
  3. Open Live Activities. Tap Live Activities if that item is listed.
  4. Disable the control. Switch off the Live Activities option.
  5. Allow the current activity to clear. An activity already in progress may remain briefly while the app finishes or refreshes. The setting prevents that app from presenting Live Activities going forward; it does not cancel the underlying order, trip, game or other event.
  6. Repeat only when necessary. If another app is responsible for a separate activity, change that app’s setting independently.

The exact labels can vary with the iPhone model, iOS release and app version. The current Apple route is Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities. If the menu is missing, check that you selected the app that owns the activity and that the app supports the feature.

Check whether Live Activities are actually using significant power

The presence of a visible activity is not proof that it caused a battery drop. Apple describes battery life as the result of many factors, including how much you use the device and which apps you use. Use the Battery screen to distinguish an app that is genuinely active in the background from one that is merely displaying an update.

  1. Open Settings > Battery.
  2. Review the daily usage display and compare the current day with the previous seven days when that view is available.
  3. Choose the day in question to inspect app and system activity.
  4. Open the relevant app’s details. Look for time spent on screen and in the background, along with any indicators for notifications or other activity.
  5. Compare the app’s activity with the time and size of the battery decline. A high percentage by itself does not prove that the Live Activity caused it; the app may have been used directly, fetching data, playing media or handling another task.

Apple’s battery information can identify several contributors, including background activity, weak cellular coverage and notifications that wake the device. Those indicators are more useful than guessing from the appearance of a Live Activity.

How to interpret the Battery screen

Background activity

An app may continue working after you leave it. If the Battery screen shows substantial background time, investigate that app’s normal behavior before attributing the usage to the Live Activity itself. A delivery, navigation or sports app can be doing legitimate work related to an ongoing event, while a different app may be refreshing or synchronizing independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Notifications

Notifications can wake the iPhone and light the display. If the Battery screen points to notification activity, review the app’s notification settings separately. Do not describe that change as disabling Live Activities: Apple documents those as different controls.

Cellular coverage

When signal quality is poor or unavailable, the iPhone may use more power maintaining a connection. A battery decline in a basement, train, rural area or other weak-coverage location can therefore coincide with a Live Activity without being caused by the activity’s display.

Recent iOS updates

If the problem began immediately after updating iOS, Apple advises waiting a few days and checking again. Update-related tasks can continue in the background for a time, so a short-lived increase in use may not reflect normal battery behavior.

Use a simple before-and-after test

Because Apple does not provide a controlled Live Activities battery comparison, you can make your own practical check without treating it as a laboratory measurement.

  1. Record the app’s Battery usage and the phone’s starting charge on a day when the activity is active.
  2. Turn off that app’s Live Activities using the per-app path.
  3. Use the iPhone normally under similar conditions, including roughly similar signal strength and screen time.
  4. Review the Battery screen later that day and over the following days.
  5. Look for a consistent change in that app’s background or notification activity, not just a single percentage-point difference.

This comparison cannot isolate every variable. A longer navigation session, a major sporting event, a weak signal or an iOS maintenance task can outweigh any effect from the display feature. Treat the result as evidence about your particular phone and app, not as a universal savings rate.

Per-app Live Activities versus Low Power Mode

These controls solve different problems. Use the narrow option when one app is suspected; use Low Power Mode when you need broader, temporary savings across the device.

Control Where to find it Scope Effect on other features Best use
Per-app Live Activities Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities One supported app Other apps’ Live Activities remain available Test or stop a specific app’s activities
Low Power Mode Settings > Battery > Power Mode System-wide power reduction Limits or disables selected features, including Background App Refresh and some visual effects General battery conservation when remaining charge matters

Low Power Mode is not a diagnostic for Live Activities. If enabling it improves endurance, that only shows that one or more of the features it changes were using power; it does not identify Live Activities as the cause. It can also change normal behavior, so use the per-app switch when preserving other functions is important.

What Low Power Mode and Adaptive Power do

Low Power Mode

Apple places the control under Settings > Battery > Power Mode in current software. The available controls can differ by iPhone model and iOS version. Low Power Mode reduces power use by limiting or disabling selected functions, including Background App Refresh and some visual effects. It is broader than turning off one app’s Live Activities and may affect how other apps update.

Apple states that Low Power Mode turns off automatically after the iPhone is charged above 80 percent. That 80 percent figure describes the mode’s behavior, not a Live Activities battery saving.

Adaptive Power

Adaptive Power is available only on supported iPhone models and software versions. Apple says it can make adjustments such as lowering brightness or limiting background activity, and on supported configurations it may enable Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20 percent. The 20 percent threshold is a feature trigger, not evidence of how much power Live Activities consume.

When the Live Activities switch is missing

  • Confirm the app. A widget, notification or system indicator can look similar to a Live Activity. Open the item or its source app to identify the owner.
  • Check the app’s page under Settings > Apps. Scroll through the available options rather than searching only in the main Notifications list.
  • Update the app and iOS when appropriate. Menu availability depends on software support, and an older app may not expose the current control.
  • Do not substitute unrelated settings. Disabling all notifications or Background App Refresh may change other behavior, but Apple’s guidance does not establish either as the same action as disabling Live Activities.

CarPlay and more than one active app

If the activity appears on a CarPlay screen, use the same per-app setting on the paired iPhone. Apple documents the Live Activities controls for both iPhone and CarPlay, so you do not need a separate CarPlay battery setting to make this targeted change.

When several activities are visible, disable them one app at a time rather than switching off unrelated system features. Note the time of each change and check Battery usage afterward. This makes it easier to tell whether a delivery app, navigation app, sports app or another service is associated with the background activity shown for that period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to make the comparison more useful

Try to compare similar days: similar screen brightness and screen time, comparable cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, and roughly the same type of app use. Record whether the phone was recently updated, because post-update processing can temporarily distort the comparison. A single afternoon is not enough to establish a pattern, especially when an event has unusually frequent updates.

Look at both the app percentage and the activity labels. A smaller percentage with many hours of screen use may be less concerning than a large amount of background time while the phone is idle. The Battery screen is a diagnostic aid, not a meter that attributes every watt to one visible feature.

If battery life is still poor after disabling Live Activities

Find the highest-use app

Return to Settings > Battery and inspect the app and system entries for the affected days. Focus on the largest contributors and on whether their use was foreground, background or notification-related.

Check your usage pattern

Long periods of navigation, video, gaming, camera use or high screen brightness can dominate battery consumption. Compare like-for-like days before drawing a conclusion from the Live Activities change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider network conditions

If the drain is concentrated in places with weak cellular service, the connection itself may be the important variable. Recheck the Battery screen when the phone is used under stronger coverage.

Allow time after an update

For a problem that started after an iOS update, wait several days while background update work settles, then review the daily and seven-day views again.

Use Low Power Mode temporarily

When you need immediate endurance, enable Low Power Mode from Settings > Battery > Power Mode. Remember that it changes several system behaviors and should not be treated as proof that Live Activities were responsible.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting a fixed percentage. Apple publishes no standard Live Activities battery-drain figure or guaranteed improvement from switching the feature off.
  • Blaming every visible activity. The app may have legitimate background work, and the Battery screen may point to cellular coverage or notifications instead.
  • Turning off every notification first. That can hide important alerts while leaving the suspected battery cause unresolved.
  • Confusing cancellation with display control. Disabling Live Activities changes what the iPhone shows; it does not cancel an order, trip, match, timer or other service managed by the app.
  • Assuming all iPhones have identical menus. Model, iOS release and app support affect which settings appear.
  • Judging from one short observation. Compare the Battery screen over comparable days and account for signal, screen time and recent updates.

What savings should you expect?

There is no supported number to quote. Apple’s current battery guidance does not provide a Live Activities-specific percentage, runtime increase or controlled comparison. The effect can be small, substantial or effectively unnoticeable depending on the app, how often it updates, network conditions and what else the iPhone is doing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The defensible conclusion is narrower: disabling a suspected app’s Live Activities removes that app’s Live Activity presentation, and the Battery screen can show whether the app or related background activity was a meaningful contributor on your device. A measurable improvement is possible, but it is not guaranteed.

A practical decision path

  1. One app clearly owns the activity: disable Live Activities for that app.
  2. The Battery screen shows high background or notification use: investigate that activity instead of assuming the display feature is responsible.
  3. The issue appears only in weak coverage: compare battery behavior in a stronger-signal location.
  4. The issue started after an iOS update: wait a few days, then review the seven-day comparison.
  5. You need broad short-term savings: enable Low Power Mode, understanding that it affects multiple features.
  6. The activity setting is unavailable: verify the app and software support; do not claim that an unrelated switch disables Live Activities.

Bottom line

Use Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities to stop one app’s Live Activities, then verify the result in Settings > Battery. Apple identifies background work, notifications, cellular coverage and post-update tasks as other battery factors, and it gives no universal figure for Live Activities-related savings. Low Power Mode is available under Settings > Battery > Power Mode for broader conservation, but it is not a substitute for checking which process is actually using your battery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off Live Activities for just one app?

Open Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities, then switch off the control. Other apps’ Live Activities remain enabled.

Will disabling Live Activities cancel my order, trip or game?

No. The setting controls what the iPhone displays. It does not cancel the underlying order, journey, match, timer or other service managed by the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Live Activities always drain the battery?

Not necessarily. Check Settings > Battery for the app’s screen, background and notification activity before assigning blame. Apple does not publish a universal Live Activities drain figure.

Why can I not find the Live Activities option?

Confirm that you selected the app that owns the activity and that the app and iOS version support the feature. Menu availability varies by app, model and software.

Does turning off notifications disable Live Activities?

No. Notifications and Live Activities are separate controls in Apple’s settings. Changing notifications may affect alerts without being the documented Live Activities switch.

Does Low Power Mode turn off Live Activities?

Low Power Mode is a broad power-saving mode that limits or disables several features. Use the per-app Live Activities control when you want a targeted change, and do not treat Low Power Mode as proof that Live Activities caused the drain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long should I wait after an iOS update before judging battery life?

Apple advises waiting a few days because update-related tasks can continue in the background. Then compare the current day with the last seven days in Settings > Battery.

How much battery life will I save?

There is no Apple-supported percentage or guaranteed runtime increase. The effect depends on the app, update frequency, network conditions and the rest of your usage.

The Bottom Line

Disable Live Activities at Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities, then use Settings > Battery to verify whether that app is a meaningful contributor. Low Power Mode can provide broader, temporary savings, but no fixed Live Activities-related improvement is guaranteed.
