What v.je is supposed to do
v.je is the local site address for a Docker-based PHP development environment described by the project author. Its documented stack includes NGINX, MariaDB, PHP, Composer, and PHPUnit. The book PHP & MySQL: Novice to Ninja, 7th Edition instructs readers to start its Docker Compose setup and then visit https://v.je. Its default site files go in websites/default/public, and directories under websites can map to subdomains. First, identify which failure you have
Record the full browser message and check Docker Desktop’s Compose status and logs. The reports in a July 2026 discussion changed over time: an initial browser security warning was followed by net::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID, a MySQL message about not getting a private key, a Docker Desktop update-certificate error describing an invalid or uninitialized ZIP object, and later ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED. Those symptoms are not interchangeable, and the poster did not report a verified resolution. July 2026 discussion
- Compose or container startup fails: the site may never be available. Start with the Compose output and the logs for the service that failed.
- The browser says
ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED: investigate whether the web service is running, listening on its configured port, and reachable using the configured hostname. A certificate change does not by itself address a refused connection. - The browser reaches v.je but flags its certificate: investigate certificate creation, installation, and validity separately. A certificate warning is not the same as a server that is unavailable.
These are diagnostic branches, not a confirmed machine-specific repair. The discussion does not supply the affected computer’s current Compose file, operating system, Docker and Compose versions, complete logs, or confirmation that the web container is healthy and listening.

If Docker services do not start
Read the Compose output and identify the service reporting the first failure rather than treating the browser message as the root cause. For example, a MySQL private-key message or a failed certificate-update step is a startup/log symptom; it does not establish that the browser’s certificate is the only problem. Preserve the complete current log and note which service emitted it. The July 2026 thread reports both kinds of messages, but does not establish their cause or a successful remedy. If the browser refuses the connection
With ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED, check whether the Compose web service is up and whether its configured port and hostname are reachable. The discussion does not include the reader’s Compose configuration or enough connection details to give a reliable port value or command. An older Windows question likewise describes containers that appeared to run while v.je remained unreachable, but it does not diagnose a different computer’s setup. Older Windows report

If the browser reports a certificate error
Do not trust a certificate simply to dismiss the warning. The project author’s certificate guidance warns that publicly shared certificates for local development do not prove that the connection is to the correct site and can expose users to man-in-the-middle attacks. Follow the project’s guidance for the local certificate path and validity rather than installing an unverified shared certificate. Project certificate guidance
A certificate warning can coexist with other setup problems. In the reported discussion, certificate symptoms and startup or connection failures appeared at different points; changing certificates should not be assumed to fix a container that fails to start or a refused connection.

What to include when asking for help
If the error persists, provide enough detail for someone to distinguish startup, connectivity, and certificate issues:
- Your operating system and Docker Desktop and Compose versions.
- The exact browser error and whether it occurs before or after the Compose services start.
- The current Compose configuration, with passwords, tokens, and other secrets removed.
- The complete logs for the failing service and the web service, including the first error rather than only the last message.
- Whether the web container is healthy and listening on its configured port, and whether the hostname is configured as the tutorial expects.
These details are absent from the July 2026 report, so its symptoms cannot be reduced to one diagnosis. Discussion and reported symptoms
