An SKU, or stock keeping unit, is a code a business uses internally to identify and track an item it stocks. A different size or color that can be sold separately usually needs its own SKU. Unlike a GTIN, an SKU is not a universal product identifier: each business can choose its own format.
What does SKU stand for?
SKU stands for stock keeping unit. It is an internal identifier used to organize inventory and connect stock records with sales and fulfillment. Shopify Help Center defines them this way: “SKUs (stock keeping units) are codes that you can use internally to track your inventory and report on your sales.”
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
For example, a shop might use the made-up code TS-BLU-M for a medium blue T-shirt. The code is meaningful to that business; it is not a standard that other sellers must follow. Two sellers can assign different SKUs to the same trade item.
How do SKUs work?
A business assigns a unique code to each item or sellable variant it wants to track, then uses that code in its inventory or point-of-sale records. When a product comes in, sells, moves between locations, or is picked for an order, staff and connected systems can refer to the SKU to identify the relevant stock record.

Variants matter because a product name alone may not distinguish what is in the package. A shirt offered in three sizes and four colors has 12 size-color combinations; if each is sold and stocked separately, each combination can have its own SKU. Shopify’s guidance uses this kind of variant-level tracking.
What are SKUs used for?
- Inventory records: Distinguish products and variants so recorded stock can be tied to the intended item.
- Sales reports: Review sales by product or variant when the business records transactions at SKU level.
- Picking and fulfillment: Help staff locate and pack the intended item, particularly when names or packaging look similar.
- Locations and integrations: Provide a reference that inventory systems, point-of-sale tools, or connected apps may use to sync product information.
- Replenishment planning: Historical movement by SKU can help a business assess demand and plan reorders, provided its records are accurate.
The code itself does not improve forecasts, prevent stockouts, or guarantee a particular business result. Those outcomes depend on the quality of the records and the processes or software using them.

How to create a practical SKU
There is no universal SKU format or required length. Shopify Help Center recommends meaningful, consistently used characters, avoiding spaces and potentially confusing pairs such as zero and O or one and I, and leaving room for the catalog to grow. It offers 16 characters or fewer as a guideline, not a universal standard; Shopify’s separate 2025 guide notes that there is no universal maximum. Choose a manageable length your team and systems can handle.
- Decide what the code needs to distinguish. Include only attributes staff need to recognize, such as product type, color, or size.
- Choose consistent abbreviations. For example, decide in advance whether blue is always
BLUrather than alternating betweenBLandBLUE. - Use a readable pattern. Separators such as hyphens can make sections easier to scan; avoid spaces and characters that are easy to mistake for one another.
- Make each sellable variant unique. If two variants need separate stock records, assign them different codes.
- Check existing records before assigning a code. A code should point to one item or variant within the business’s system, not be reused for a different product.
TS-BLU-M is an illustrative, made-up example: product type, color, and size. A different business may use another structure; clarity and consistency matter more than copying this pattern.

SKU vs. barcode, GTIN, UPC, and model number
These terms are related but not interchangeable. A SKU is the business’s internal code; a barcode is a machine-readable symbol that can represent an identifier. GS1 describes the GTIN as an identification key for a trade item intended for use across the marketplace.
| Identifier | Who assigns or defines it | Where it is unique | What workflow it supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| SKU | The business using it | Within that business’s inventory system | Internal stock tracking, reporting, and fulfillment |
| GTIN | Defined within the GS1 identification system | For identifying a trade item across the marketplace | Recognizing trade items across organizations |
| Barcode | Depends on the identifier and barcode system used | Not inherently universal; it represents encoded data | Machine reading at points such as receiving or checkout |
| UPC | A product identifier used in retail contexts | Associated with a retail product identifier; not a blanket term for every barcode | Retail product identification |
| Model number | Typically the manufacturer | Within the manufacturer’s product or model system | Identifying a product model, rather than a seller’s stock record |
| FNSKU | Amazon | Within Amazon’s fulfillment labeling context | Amazon-specific product identification and fulfillment |
A barcode is the scannable representation, not necessarily the SKU itself. A business may store an SKU and a barcode in separate fields, as Shopify’s product records allow. A GTIN may be shared by retailers selling the same trade item, while each retailer uses its own SKU. “UPC” should not be used as a catch-all for every barcode or GTIN.

Buzzer can be set to mute to allow for a quiet operation.(Note: It does not work with square POS / Divalto / DoorDash / Lightspeed POS system)
Do all businesses need SKUs?
No universal rule requires every business to assign SKUs. They are useful when a business needs to distinguish stock, report on variants, coordinate fulfillment, or connect inventory records across systems. A very small catalog may be manageable without a formal code scheme; as variants, locations, or sales channels grow, a consistent internal identifier can make records easier to maintain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo SKU labels have to be printed?
No. The SKU can exist only in a digital inventory or point-of-sale record. A business may print it on a sticker or label to help staff identify products in storage, handle returns, or answer customer questions, but a physical label is optional.
