Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBefore paying for a used PS5 Pro, test the actual console in person: check its serial number and physical condition, connect it to the internet and PlayStation services, verify the picture and ports, and test any included disc drive. A seller’s video and listing photos help you prepare, but they cannot replace a live inspection.
Before arranging a meeting
- Request a current video of the exact console. Ask the seller to show it powering on, producing a stable picture, connecting to the internet, and demonstrating its ports and buttons. If a disc drive is included, ask to see it tested too. Sony recommends this kind of video demonstration in its PlayStation buying guide.
- Ask for clear photos. Request the model label and serial number, HDMI port, controller and cables, and any included disc-drive attachment. A box or proof of purchase may help establish what is being sold, but does not by itself verify the console’s condition.
- Confirm exactly what comes with it. The PS5 Pro has a disc-drive port but no integrated disc drive; the drive is optional. If you want physical games or movie discs, confirm that a compatible drive is included or budget for one separately. Sony’s PS5 setup guidance explains the drive option.
- Ask about repairs and known problems. Find out why the seller is selling, whether the console has been opened or repaired, and whether it has had faults. An unclear answer is a reason to insist on a thorough live test, not proof that the console is defective.
- Review the seller’s history. Check feedback and past listings; Sony also recommends reviewing a seller’s reputation.
What to inspect at the handover
- Match the console to the listing. Check the model label and make sure the serial number is present and appears intact. Do not proceed if it is missing or visibly altered. Sony flags removed serial numbers as a warning; its US and Canada warranty terms also exclude consoles with altered, defaced, or removed serial numbers. Those terms are specific to that region and do not establish coverage for buyers elsewhere. See Sony’s US/Canada PS5 warranty.
- Inspect the case and openings. Look for cracks, impact marks, liquid residue, heavy dust, damaged connectors, loose panels, or signs of unauthorized opening. Sony advises checking for damage and broken seals. An exterior check can reveal warning signs, but cannot prove that internal components are healthy.
- Connect it to a display. Use HDMI and check for a stable picture and normal menu operation. Look for visible image problems and confirm the console responds to basic navigation.
- Test ports, controller, and network. Try the available USB connections and, where practical, both wired or wireless internet. Pair the controller and test its controls. Connect the console to the internet and confirm it can reach PlayStation services. Sony says a console reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services and recommends checking service access on connected products. A successful check is useful, but cannot guarantee future access or establish the console’s full history.
- Let it run briefly. Navigate menus or start a game and watch for unexpected shutdowns, overheating warnings, or other visible faults. Listen for unusual noise. Sony’s used-buying advice includes checking for overheating; a short test cannot establish long-term reliability.
- Test an included disc drive. Insert a known-good disc and verify that the console reads it. Sony says the optional drive supports PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray games and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback. Pairing the drive with the console during setup requires an internet connection. See Sony’s PS5 Pro product information.
- Complete the account handover. Ask the seller to deactivate the console from their account and confirm they no longer need access to it. Before using your own account, reset the system to remove the seller’s data. Sony recommends deactivation and provides reset guidance in its console transfer and disposal instructions.
How to weigh the listing and your options
Compare used listings on the evidence that matters, not just the asking price. A useful comparison includes tested function, visible condition, intact serial number, included controller and cables, whether a disc drive is included, proof of purchase, seller deactivation, PlayStation-service access, return options, and any warranty that actually applies to you.

Third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered by warranty. Sony says its certified-refurbished PlayStation products include warranty coverage, but confirm the terms for the particular listing. The available US certified-refurbished listing is for a PS5 console, not a PS5 Pro, so it should not be treated as a Pro alternative: Sony Certified Refurbished PS5 listing. Check current inventory, regional terms, and return conditions before choosing any retailer option.
What the inspection cannot tell you
Sony lists the PS5 Pro as having a 2 TB custom SSD and identifies HDMI output, USB ports, an M.2 expansion connector, and a disc-drive port in its CFI-71XX PS5 Safety Guide. A hands-on check can confirm basic operation and reveal obvious issues; it cannot prove the console has never been repaired, guarantee future reliability, or conclusively clear every prior account or service issue. The guidance cited here does not identify a public checker that guarantees a used console is free of those issues. If a status concern remains after testing, contact PlayStation Support before completing the purchase.
