Windows clipboard history lets you copy several things, then choose the one you need with Windows logo key + V. It can keep up to 25 copied entries, and you can pin useful ones so they remain available after a restart. On first use, turn it on; it is a short workflow change, not permanent storage.
Turn on clipboard history
In Windows 11, press Windows logo key + V. If history is off, select Turn on in the panel. You can also enable it through Start > Settings > System > Clipboard. Microsoft’s Using the clipboard guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so these steps are most relevant to current Windows 11 users. Menu wording can vary by release.

Choose something you copied
Copy text or another supported item as usual, then press Windows logo key + V to open the history. Select an entry to paste it into the active app. Instead of switching back and forth to copy one thing at a time, you can gather several items and retrieve them when needed.

As room is needed, older unpinned entries are removed automatically. The documented per-item size limit is 4 MB, and supported formats include text, HTML, and bitmap. That does not guarantee that every application will expose every format in the same way.

Keep frequently used items with a pin
In the Windows logo key + V panel, pin entries you want to keep handy. Unpinned history is cleared when the PC restarts, while pinned entries remain. Pinning is useful for snippets you reuse, but it does not turn the clipboard into an archive: the history still has a capacity limit.
Sync clipboard text across devices
Clipboard sync is optional. To configure it, open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and enable sync; Microsoft ties the feature to the Microsoft or work account used on each device. Sync choices differ in how much action they require:

Choose whether to enable sync based on your own comfort with sending clipboard text between your devices. Microsoft’s guidance describes the manual upload behavior; it does not establish retention periods or provide a basis here for broader claims about how every clipboard item is handled.

Open clipboard history with Windows logo key + V to delete an individual item or clear the history from its controls. You can also go to Start > Settings > System > Clipboard > Clear clipboard data. Microsoft says clearing clipboard data excludes pinned items.

If you can’t see clipboard history
- Win+V shows a prompt to turn it on: Select Turn on, then press the shortcut again after copying something.
- The history is empty: Copy a new item and check again. Unpinned history is cleared when the PC restarts.
- An older entry has disappeared: History holds up to 25 entries; older unpinned entries are removed to make room.
- A format looks different in an app: Supported formats are text, HTML, and bitmap, but how an application presents them can vary.
