This permanently erases the server’s data and settings, so back up anything you need before you proceed.
Before you reimage: understand what will be erased
Bluehost’s documented procedure applies to its self-managed VPS and VDS portal flow, not to a generic bare-metal server reinstall. Bluehost warns: “Changing the server image will permanently erase all data and settings on this VPS or VDS.” Treat this as a destructive replacement, not an in-place GatorClaw upgrade. Back up important data, applications, and templates before continuing. Bluehost’s GatorClaw reimage guide, updated August 25, 2026, does not prescribe a particular backup method.

The one-click image method installs one application image at a time. If you need to retain the existing server template, Bluehost’s guide says to install GatorClaw manually over SSH instead; that is a different procedure.

- Sign in to the Bluehost Portal and open Hosting > My Plans.
- Find the VPS or VDS package you intend to replace and select its management option.
- Open Server Image, then choose Reimage.
- Select Applications, choose GatorClaw, and enter
reimagein the confirmation field. - Proceed with the reimage and wait for the process to finish. Confirm that GatorClaw appears under Server Image.
These labels and steps are the Bluehost portal workflow documented in its reimage instructions. Portal availability and displayed options determine whether the image can be selected for a particular account.

Complete GatorClaw’s initial setup
After the image change, open the server’s initial setup interface using its IP address and port 47716, then follow the setup wizard. Bluehost’s guide identifies the setup path as /setup, but gives inconsistent scheme guidance: it shows an HTTP address and later says to use HTTPS with a trailing slash. Use the scheme and exact URL shown by the provider’s live setup page rather than assuming one version is correct.
Bluehost describes a temporary self-signed SSL certificate warning during first access. Before continuing, verify that the browser is connecting to the intended server and that the warning is the expected initial setup certificate. A certificate warning by itself is not a reason to proceed.

In the wizard, configure the AI model you intend to use, the automation workflows, and permissions for server actions. Model access is not automatic: HostGator’s Brazil-specific GatorClaw VPS documentation says its VPS model use requires an API key from the selected AI provider. That requirement is documented for HostGator’s deployment and should not be assumed to describe every host’s configuration. HostGator’s Brazil help article also notes that some integrations may need extra permissions or external authentication.
Check the installation and investigate problems
Bluehost documents SSH access on port 22 for command-line checks. Once connected, run:

gatorclaw health
pm2 statusThe first command checks GatorClaw’s health; the second checks the process manager’s status. For investigation, Bluehost also lists these commands:
pm2 logs devclaw
pm2 restart devclawUse the logs to inspect process output. Restarting a process can interrupt active work, so do it only when appropriate for your server.

Know which deployment details are provider-specific
Bluehost describes GatorClaw as built on OpenClaw and integrated with its VPS/VDS environment. HostGator separately documents a GatorClaw VPS using Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and port 47716; those are HostGator-specific details, not universal requirements for every GatorClaw installation. Its VPS help page explains its setup context, while its GatorClaw VPS page describes self-managed plans as infrastructure-only support, with customers handling the operating system, configuration, and applications.

Choose a deployment based on whether your provider offers a compatible GatorClaw image, how much system and application administration you are prepared to handle, and whether you can supply model credentials and meet integration requirements. Provider materials describe different deployment arrangements, not a controlled performance comparison.
