Capture a page at explicit mobile viewport dimensions
This runnable ES-module example uses 390 × 844 pixels as an illustrative viewport, not a standard that represents every phone. Choose dimensions that match the layout or test case you need.

}Install Puppeteer in your project with npm install puppeteer, save the code as an ES module (for example, mobile-shot.mjs), and run node mobile-shot.mjs. Replace the example URL with the page to capture. The finally block closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails.
Set the viewport before navigation: some sites do not expect a phone-sized resize after they have loaded. The Puppeteer Page.setViewport() documentation also notes that changing isMobile or hasTouch can trigger a reload in some cases.

Choose between a viewport and device emulation
Use explicit dimensions for responsive-layout checks
page.setViewport({ width, height, deviceScaleFactor }) resizes the page to the dimensions you specify. This is the straightforward option when your requirement is a particular viewport size, such as checking a breakpoint or producing a repeatable screenshot. The device scale factor controls the relationship between CSS pixels and output pixels; select it to fit the test rather than assuming one value is right for all phones.
Emulate a named device when its metrics and user agent matter
page.emulate() applies a device’s viewport and user agent together. Puppeteer recommends doing this before navigation. The available names come from Puppeteer’s device catalog and depend on the installed version, so check the API documentation for your version rather than relying on a device name from a different release.

Control what the screenshot includes
- Viewport only:
page.screenshot({ path: 'mobile.png' })captures the current viewport by default. - Full document: use
page.screenshot({ path: 'full.png', fullPage: true })to capture the whole page, including content beyond the initial viewport. - Specific rectangle: use the screenshot option
clipwhen only a defined region is needed. Its coordinates and dimensions specify the capture area. - One element: locate an element and call its
screenshot()method. Puppeteer’s guide says it will try to scroll a hidden element into view before capturing it.
With a supplied path, the filename extension can determine the image format. PNG is the documented default, and the quality option applies to formats that support it, not to PNG. See Puppeteer’s Screenshots guide and ScreenshotOptions reference for the supported options.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The result looks like a desktop page squeezed into a phone
Set the viewport before page.goto(), and confirm that the width and height match the test you intend to run. If behavior depends on a device’s user agent or device metrics rather than dimensions alone, use page.emulate() with a device available in your installed Puppeteer version.
The screenshot is missing content or appears too early
The sample waits for networkidle2, but pages with continuing network activity may not reach that state as expected. Choose a navigation wait condition suited to the page, or wait for a specific element before capturing. A full-page capture can include content below the fold, but lazy-loaded images may require scrolling or another page-specific wait before the screenshot.

The capture is the wrong size or format
Check the viewport dimensions and deviceScaleFactor, then inspect the saved filename extension. Use fullPage: true for the full document; otherwise the default capture is the viewport. Do not expect quality to change PNG output.
The script exits with an error
- Confirm Puppeteer is installed in the project and that Node treats the file as an ES module (using
.mjsis one option). - Check that the target URL is reachable from the machine running the script and that navigation has not timed out.
- If using
KnownDevices, verify the device name against the installed package’s catalog.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a mobile viewport screenshot prove a page works on a real phone?
No. It records a browser rendering under the configured viewport or emulated device settings; it is not a test on physical phone hardware.
