What connects to what
BMAD (Breakthrough Method for Agile AI-Driven Development) installs agent skills and slash commands into Claude Code. It uses the backend Claude Code is authenticated with, so setting up credits means configuring the Claude Code session BMAD runs in. This is how Jay C., author of Bluehost’s BMAD setup article, describes the relationship; BMAD does not have an independent model-provider screen.

The steps below are for developers who already have BMAD installed on a Bluehost Self-Managed VPS or VDS. They assume SSH access, Claude Code installed, and BMAD available in the project or session where you plan to use it.

Bluehost says AI Credits are available on its Self-Managed VPS and VDS plans. An active AI Credits balance is required to create an API key. In the Bluehost portal, open Hosting, select the relevant hosting package, and go to its AI Tooling page to create the key. Bluehost shows the key only when it is created, so store it securely; if it is lost, generate a replacement. See Bluehost’s API-key instructions.

- Confirm you can connect to the server over SSH and have permission to edit the account’s shell profile.
- Check that Claude Code and BMAD are installed and reachable under the Unix user you intend to use.
- Make sure the AI Credits balance is active and the API key is available.
Choose the setup path that matches Claude Code
Bluehost’s documentation shows two credential patterns. Its dedicated Claude Code guide calls the environment-variable method below the confirmed approach for a fresh setup. The BMAD-specific article instead shows ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN and says Claude Code may also require ANTHROPIC_API_KEY as a placeholder. Don’t combine the examples by guesswork: for a new Claude Code setup, follow the dedicated guide’s variables, then test the connection.

Set the environment variables for the right Unix account
Add the variables to the shell profile for the account that starts Claude Code. Bluehost’s Claude Code example uses /root/.profile on its server setup, but that path is not universal: a BMAD server template may run as root or under a dedicated user. Check the template’s login account and active shell before editing a profile.

Save the profile, load it for the current shell if appropriate, and start a new Claude Code session so it receives the updated environment. A running session does not pick up changes made to a startup profile.

Test the connection before starting a BMAD workflow
- Start a new shell session as the account whose profile you configured.
- Run the simple Claude Code prompt Bluehost provides:
claude -p "Say hello and confirm you're responding." - Check for a normal response without authentication errors. This is a basic routing check, not proof that every model or workflow is supported.
- Open Claude Code in the project where BMAD is installed and run
/bmad-help, or the equivalent help command for your installed BMAD version, to check that its skills are available.
Bluehost documents AI Credits as an OpenAI-compatible gateway for general API connections, while its separate integration guide also documents an Anthropic-style Messages endpoint. That route is POST https://gateway.ai.bluehost.com/v1/messages; its request format, headers, and response shape differ from the OpenAI-compatible API. The presence of that route does not establish that a particular Claude Code template, key, or model will work without testing. See Bluehost’s integration guide.

Troubleshoot in this order
- Claude Code asks you to authenticate: Check that you edited the profile for the correct Unix user, that the shell loaded it, and that you started a new Claude Code session.
- The key is rejected: Check for copying errors and confirm the key is still active. Bluehost displays a key only at creation; create a replacement if you no longer have it.
- The gateway receives a request but it fails: Check that the client’s API format and endpoint match the route being used, and that your account has credits. An Anthropic-compatible Messages route is documented, but it is not a test of your exact Claude Code installation.
/bmad-helpis unrecognized: Confirm BMAD is installed and that you are running the command in the appropriate project and Claude Code session. The exact command can differ by installed BMAD version.- Profile edits seem to have no effect: Start a new shell and Claude Code session; existing processes retain the environment they started with.
Understand the AI Credits cost and expiry
Bluehost’s 2026 documentation lists one-time, prepaid AI Credits at $0.010 per credit, with no auto-renewal. The listed packs have the same per-credit rate:

Bluehost says credits expire 12 months after the most recent purchase, which resets the validity window for the entire balance. Credits are non-refundable, and usage is deducted at model-specific per-token rates. All API keys draw from the same account wallet, so keys do not create separate balances. Check the current portal balance, pack prices, model rates, and supported models before buying; Bluehost notes that pricing may change. Its AI Credits pricing information is the place to verify current terms.
