That could reduce the number of individual lasers in some designs and increase bandwidth density. Research teams have demonstrated multi-wavelength links and integrated components, but the evidence does not show that comb lasers are already replacing conventional transceivers across AI data centers—or when they might do so.
What is a frequency-comb laser?
A frequency comb produces a set of optical frequencies, or “lines,” separated by regular intervals. In a fiber link, each line can serve as a carrier for its own data channel. Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) combines those channels so they travel through one fiber, then separates them at the receiving end.

The potential advantage is a shared source for multiple wavelengths instead of an array of independently generated laser signals. But the comb is only the source: each channel still needs data encoding, routing, reception and control. NIST’s project description of semiconductor integration of electronics and photonics frames this broader integration challenge; a comb by itself is not a complete optical link.
How could combs fit into AI data center links?
AI systems move data among accelerators, memory, servers and network equipment. As links need to carry more traffic, optical interconnects can use multiple wavelengths in parallel through the same fiber. A comb source could supply those carriers in a compact, integrated arrangement, potentially increasing capacity per fiber and reducing source-component count or footprint in some implementations.

Whether that translates into lower energy per bit or a smaller deployed system depends on the entire link: the source, modulators, filters, receivers, control electronics, optical coupling and packaging. A component measurement cannot establish the energy use of a full transceiver, much less the power consumption of a data-center facility. Likewise, a higher laboratory link rate does not by itself mean AI workloads run faster; application performance also depends on network topology, switching, congestion and the workload.
What has been demonstrated so far?
The published results cover different source types and link conditions, so their headline rates are not a direct ranking. Some are link demonstrations; others measure a transmitter or the comb device itself. The measurement boundary matters as much as the number.

| Nature Photonics, 2023 | 512 Gb/s aggregate across 32 independent wavelength channels on one fiber, using a chip-based Kerr-comb silicon-photonic link. | A demonstrated multi-channel chip link. The paper discusses scalability to hundreds of channels as potential, not as a production system already demonstrated. |
| IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, online July 23, 2024; journal issue 2025 | An 8 × 100 Gb/s quantum-dot comb-laser-based silicon microring transmitter; reported transmitter energy efficiency is 1.66 pJ/bit, including the laser source. | A transmitter result with a stated component boundary—not an end-to-end link or facility energy figure. |
| Nature Communications, 2024 | 12.1 Tb/s over a 10 km single-mode-fiber link, using 26 wavelengths in an O-band coherent experiment with quantum-dot mode-locked laser frequency combs. | A long-reach coherent link demonstration. Its reach and transmission scheme differ from the other examples. |
| Scientific Reports, 2024 | Up to 89 comb wavelengths, spaced at 25 GHz, across 2.2 THz of optical bandwidth in a quantum-dot semiconductor comb-laser device characterization. | A source characterization, not a measured data-link rate. |
| NIST-associated Nature Communications work, 2025 | An integrated demultiplexer/control result reported 2.4 mW total demultiplexer power. At 32 Gb/s per channel, the work reports 10 fJ/bit for an 8-channel system and 2.5 fJ/bit for a 32-channel system. | These figures describe the demultiplexer/control result and channel scaling in that work, not total transceiver or facility consumption. |
The figures describe different architectures, reaches, modulation and detection approaches, and component boundaries. For example, the 512 Gb/s Kerr-comb link and the 12.1 Tb/s coherent 10 km experiment differ in both channel count and link conditions. It would be misleading to treat the larger aggregate rate as proof that one design is faster, more efficient or more suitable for a data-center deployment.

Kerr microcombs
A Kerr microcomb is generated by pumping a nonlinear optical microresonator. The 2023 silicon-photonic link used this approach. Its result illustrates how a comb can feed multiple channels, while also emphasizing that compact filtering and modulation are needed to turn the source into a practical link.

Quantum-dot mode-locked comb lasers
Quantum-dot mode-locked lasers generate multiple wavelengths within a semiconductor laser. The cited work includes an O-band transmitter, a 10 km coherent-link demonstration, and a separate device characterization. These are distinct experiments, not interchangeable specifications: their spacing, architecture and system roles differ. The existence of several source families also means the demonstrations do not identify a single architecture as the likely industry standard.
What still has to work outside the laboratory?
Multi-wavelength capacity is useful only if all the channels can be generated, separated, modulated and received reliably as part of a practical link. Important engineering challenges include:

- No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty
- Line quality and stability: comb lines must be sufficiently uniform and stable for the intended channels and operating conditions.
- Wavelength routing: filters and demultiplexers must separate channels with manageable loss and fit the system’s integration goals.
- Modulation and reception: every channel needs suitable circuitry to encode and recover data; the source alone does not carry a usable data stream.
- Control: the system must maintain alignment as operating conditions change, including temperature.
- Coupling and packaging: optical and electrical components must work together in a deployable assembly, not just on a laboratory bench.
- System-level efficiency: power used by control, modulation, detection and other link components must be counted before claiming an overall energy benefit.
The 2025 NIST-associated work addresses part of that integration problem by demonstrating autonomous locking and tracking of comb lines alongside an integrated demultiplexer. Its reported power and energy figures apply to that demultiplexer/control work, not to a complete transceiver. The result is evidence that integration challenges are being tackled, not proof that every deployment hurdle is solved.

Are comb lasers ready to replace data-center transceivers?
The evidence supports a promising research direction, not a wholesale replacement already under way. The 2023 link and later transmitter and coherent-link demonstrations show that comb-based architectures can carry multiple channels under laboratory conditions. Project reporting from the European Commission’s COINCOST project, last updated November 19, 2024, is evidence of development activity, but it does not establish fleet-wide adoption or a deployment date.

A 2025 arXiv preprint on a comb-driven coherent optical transmitter is further research-stage evidence; a preprint should not be treated as a commercial product specification. Taken together, the cited work does not establish commercial availability at scale, which comb architecture will prevail, what share of AI data-center traffic comb links could carry, or when they will become standard.
For now, the sound conclusion is narrower: comb sources offer a way to generate many optical carriers from a compact source, and research demonstrations show meaningful progress in links and supporting components. Their practical impact will depend on whether full systems can deliver reliable channels, manageable losses, efficient control and manufacturable packaging at the required cost and scale.
