No. A black rectangle can hide text on screen without removing it from the PDF. To redact safely, use a PDF editor’s explicit redaction feature, apply the redactions, sanitize hidden information, and save the resulting file. A shape that merely looks like a black box is not proof that the underlying information is gone.
Why a black box may not delete what it covers
A rectangle drawn over a paragraph is a visual object. Depending on how it was added, the original text may remain in the document and could still be selectable, searchable, or copyable. The mark changes what a reader sees; that alone does not show that the content beneath it has been removed.

An applied redaction is a different operation: the editor processes the selected content for removal rather than simply covering it with another object. Adobe’s guidance summarizes the distinction: “To redact information, first mark the items for removal and then apply the redactions.” Adobe’s redaction instructions describe marking and applying as separate steps.
How to redact a PDF in Adobe Acrobat

- Keep a protected original if you need one. Work on a copy and store any retained original according to your organization’s access and retention rules. Adobe says its apply-redaction workflow creates a new redacted file and leaves the original unchanged. See Adobe’s help page.
- Mark content with the Redact feature. Select the text, image, or page content that needs removal. For searchable text, Acrobat can also find text or patterns to mark. Text embedded in images or line art cannot be found through text search, so inspect pages visually as well. Adobe’s tutorial and help instructions describe these options.
- Apply the marked redactions. Do not stop after placing marks. Applying them is the step that processes the selected content for removal.
- Sanitize hidden information. This is separate from marking visible page content. Hidden information can include comments, metadata, and hidden layers—material that may not appear in the rendered page. Use the editor’s hidden-information removal or sanitization option where appropriate. Adobe’s tutorial includes this as part of the workflow.
- Save the redacted copy and verify it. Adobe warns that unsaved changes will be lost. For highly sensitive documents, follow your organization’s security process and have a second reviewer or approved procedure validate the saved output; no single universal validation standard is established here.
Can someone remove a black box and reveal the text?
If the black box is only an overlay, possibly: removing or moving the shape may expose text that was never deleted. If a redaction was correctly applied, the selected content should have been processed for removal, but a black appearance by itself cannot tell you which operation was used.
A 2022 study by Bland, Iyer, and Levchenko examined 11 popular PDF redaction tools. The authors found that two tools left marked text in the document. They also found that some workflows that removed the text could retain glyph-position information—clues about the locations and arrangement of characters—that leaked information about redacted text. The study’s abstract describes a typical Word-authored PDF analysis that exposed 13 bits of information about a redacted surname. Its introduction reports up to 15.9 bits in a specific first-and-last-name scenario for a PDF made with Word’s “Save as PDF,” with a 38% success rate under that scenario’s experimental conditions. These are study-specific findings, not failure rates or odds for current PDF editors generally. Read the 2022 paper, “Story Beyond the Eye: Glyph Positions Break PDF Text Redaction.”

The authors also report that rasterizing pages can improve security but does not eliminate every information leak. Their results concern particular tool versions and public document corpora; they should be treated as a documented residual-risk finding, not a universal verdict on today’s software.

What to check before sharing a redacted PDF
- The content was selected with an explicit Redact feature, not merely covered with a shape.
- The redactions were applied, not left as pending marks.
- Hidden information such as comments, metadata, or hidden layers was considered and sanitized where needed.
- The final redacted copy was saved, and the saved file—not just the editing view—was checked using your organization’s approved review procedure.
