Independent reviewers praise its brightness, color and local dimming, but it is not the right buy for everyone: OLED is a stronger fit when dark-room black uniformity matters most, while a lower-priced RGB set may make more sense if you want the technology without paying flagship prices. Whether the Sony is worth it depends on your room, viewing angle, gaming needs and the current price of the size you want.
What the Sony BRAVIA 9 II is—and what it is not
Sony announced the BRAVIA 9 II on May 27, 2026, as its flagship BRAVIA True RGB television. The US product page identifies the 85-inch set as model K85XR90M2, a 2026 4K HDR Google TV with a listed $6,499.99 MSRP. Model numbers, availability and prices can differ by size and region, so check the local listing before buying. Sony’s 85-inch product page

This is an LCD television, not an OLED. Its backlight uses independently controlled red, green and blue LEDs in each zone. Sony says True RGB is designed to deliver “pure, vibrant color with an expanded color range”; the practical distinction is that RGB backlighting is intended to add color capability while retaining the high brightness associated with Mini LED LCD sets. How it performs in independent reviews
Brightness and picture quality
RTINGS reported exceptional peak brightness, strong color and effective local dimming, and said the set’s picture quality was better than any LED TV that outlet had tested as of July 2026. That is RTINGS’ assessment, not a universal ranking or a hands-on conclusion for this article. RTINGS review
Tom’s Guide measured 3,903 nits of HDR brightness in a 10% window on its production sample. The same outlet said a pre-production sample reached 3,990 nits. These are review measurements under a defined test window, not an all-screen brightness figure or a Sony specification. Tom’s Guide review

Sony separately reported more than 99% DCI-P3 coverage and approximately 90% ITU-R BT.2020 coverage for its newly developed display system in a 2025 technology announcement. Those are manufacturer-reported system-level figures, not independent measurements of a retail BRAVIA 9 II. Sony technology announcement
Black levels, haloing and viewing angle
Local dimming can make bright highlights stand out against darker scenes, but it does not behave like OLED pixels that can turn off individually. RTINGS observed haloing around bright details and subtitles, with the effect more noticeable from the sides, and warned that RGB Mini LED can tint whites. Its review also found good motion handling. Sony’s anti-glare and wide-angle features are relevant in a bright room or when seats are spread out, but they do not make room layout irrelevant. Reflections and picture consistency still depend on where windows and lights are, how far off-center viewers sit, and how much ambient light reaches the screen. Sony product page RTINGS review
Gaming
RTINGS reported low input lag and 4K at 120 Hz on two inputs. It also noted that the TV does not support higher refresh rates for PC gamers and that motion in 60 Hz gaming can look blurry. If you need more than 120 Hz or expect to connect several high-bandwidth gaming devices, check the specific port layout and requirements against your setup before choosing. RTINGS review

Which TV makes more sense for your room and budget?
| What matters most | Option to consider | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Bright-room visibility and a very bright picture | Sony BRAVIA 9 II | Its high brightness and anti-reflective treatment are advantages highlighted by RTINGS; Sony also lists anti-glare and wide-angle features. Room lighting and seating position still affect the result. RTINGS Sony |
| Dark-room blacks and avoiding halos | LG G6 OLED or Sony BRAVIA 8 II OLED | RTINGS says the LG G6 has more uniform blacks without halos around bright highlights or subtitles, and that the BRAVIA 8 II is also better suited to dark viewing than the BRAVIA 9 II. OLED is the more natural direction if black uniformity is your priority. RTINGS |
| RGB backlighting at a lower tier | Sony BRAVIA 7 II | RTINGS describes it as a step-down RGB option; the BRAVIA 9 II has stronger local dimming and higher highlights. Actual savings depend on current size-specific pricing. RTINGS |
| Another flagship RGB set | Samsung R95H | In TechRadar’s hands-on comparison, the Sony image looked richer while Samsung’s looked brighter; TechRadar preferred Sony’s picture but considered Samsung the better buy at the prices it observed, citing four HDMI 2.1 ports and interface features. TechRadar |
| Lower-priced backlit options in the UK comparison | Hisense UR9 or Samsung R95H; LG C6 OLED if OLED suits you | What Hi-Fi’s UK comparison listed the 65-inch BRAVIA 9 II at £3,499, the Hisense UR9 at £1,999 and Samsung R95H at £3,000, and said the LG C6 OLED could be bought below £2,000. These are prices from that comparison, not current offers. What Hi-Fi? |
TechRadar’s comparison listed 65-inch prices of $2,799 for the Samsung R95H and $3,499 for the Sony BRAVIA 9 II. Those were the review’s dated prices, not current quotes; compare present-day prices for the same size and region before deciding which offers better value. TechRadar
Quick Recap
What to check before you buy
- Room and seating: Prioritize brightness and reflection handling for a bright room; consider OLED if you watch mostly in a dark room and are sensitive to halos. If viewers sit far to the sides, assess the set from those seats.
- Price by size and region: Compare current local prices for the exact screen size rather than relying on launch or review pricing. Sony’s listed US MSRP applies to the 85-inch K85XR90M2, not every BRAVIA 9 II size or market. Sony product page
- Gaming connections: Confirm the number of 4K/120-capable HDMI inputs is enough for your devices; the independent review reported 4K/120 on two inputs and no support for higher PC refresh rates. RTINGS
- Picture preferences: If possible, compare the TVs using familiar content in your intended room. A preference for vivid color and bright highlights does not automatically mean the same buyer will prefer the Sony’s local dimming behavior or price.
