USB4 vs. Thunderbolt 4: Which Port Should You Look for in a PC?

Thunderbolt 4 sets a clearer minimum capability floor, while USB4 can support higher speeds. Here’s how to choose by checking your PC’s actual port specifications.

For a clearly specified minimum level of speed and capabilities, look for Thunderbolt 4. USB4 can be just as capable or faster, but the USB4 label alone does not tell you which speed or optional features a particular PC supports. Check the maker’s specifications for the exact port before buying.

USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 are related, but not interchangeable labels

USB4 is a standards family with different speed and feature levels. Thunderbolt 4 is a specific, certified standard with a defined minimum capability floor. Intel’s comparison lists a minimum PC speed of 20 Gbps for USB4 and 40 Gbps for Thunderbolt 4. Thunderbolt 4 computers, accessories and cables must be certified to ship under that label, according to Intel’s comparison.

That does not mean USB4 is always slower. USB-IF describes USB4 operation up to 80 Gbps with certified 80 Gbps cables. The higher tier is not implied by the generic USB4 name: verify the PC’s port specification and the cable’s rating. These are specification rates, not guaranteed file-transfer speeds; actual performance depends on the host, cable and connected device.

Thunderbolt 4 compliance includes USB4 specification compliance, according to Intel. Its distinction is the defined certification floor, not an exclusive ability to reach high speeds.

What the labels tell you—and what they do not

What you are comparing USB4 Thunderbolt 4
Minimum PC speed in Intel’s comparison 20 Gbps 40 Gbps
Higher speed tiers USB-IF describes operation up to 80 Gbps with certified 80 Gbps cables; confirm the PC and cable specifications. The cited Intel comparison sets a 40 Gbps minimum PC speed; it does not establish a higher Thunderbolt 4 rate.
Certification The USB4 label alone does not identify every capability of a particular PC. Intel says shipping Thunderbolt 4 computers, accessories and cables require certification.
Compatibility described by the standards bodies USB-IF lists compatibility with USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3 hosts and devices; connections scale to the best mutual capability. Intel says Thunderbolt 4 complies with USB4. Check the PC and accessory documentation for the specific connection you need.

Sources: Intel’s Thunderbolt comparison and the USB-IF USB4 overview. USB-IF lists the USB4 Specification v2.0 on April 2, 2026, but a specification’s existence does not establish that a given PC implements its faster capabilities.

USB-C is the connector, not a speed or feature guarantee

USB-C describes the oval connector shape. It does not, by itself, identify data rate, display support, charging capability or Thunderbolt support. Intel notes that Thunderbolt uses the same connector shape as USB-C while certification sets higher minimum performance and capability requirements. Look up the specific model’s I/O specifications rather than relying on the shape of the port or a generic “USB-C” label.

Likewise, USB4 compatibility with older USB and Thunderbolt 3 hosts and devices is not a promise that every USB4 PC includes every optional feature, that every device pair reaches its maximum rate, or that every historical Thunderbolt product will work. USB-IF describes the connection as scaling to the best mutual capability of the devices.

Which port should you choose for your PC?

Choose Thunderbolt 4 for a known Thunderbolt setup or a defined baseline

If you need to connect Thunderbolt 4 docks or other certified Thunderbolt gear, Thunderbolt 4 is the simpler label to evaluate: it comes with a specified minimum capability set and mandatory certification for shipping PCs, accessories and cables. Still, match the PC’s port documentation to the features your particular dock or display needs.

Choose USB4 when the specific port meets your requirements

USB4 may suit your devices and tasks, including when a PC specifies a higher speed tier. Compare the exact host specification with the requirements for your dock, display or storage device. If Thunderbolt 3 compatibility matters, confirm it explicitly for that PC; the USB4 standard’s compatibility description is not enough to prove a particular implementation supports your setup.

Check the whole connection, not just the port name

  • Dock or display: Confirm the PC maker’s stated display support and the peripheral’s requirements. Do not infer a display count from the connector alone.
  • External storage: Compare the stated rates of the PC port, enclosure and cable. A port’s advertised signaling rate is not a promise of equivalent file-transfer throughput.
  • Charging: Check the PC’s and charger’s stated charging capabilities; USB-C shape alone does not establish charging watts.
  • Cable: Match its stated speed and certification to both endpoints. A USB-C-shaped cable does not guarantee a particular rate.
  • Desktop PC: Check the motherboard or complete system documentation for the port’s capabilities, not merely whether the case has a USB-C receptacle.

Bottom line for a PC buyer

Choose Thunderbolt 4 when you want a clear minimum capability baseline or depend on Thunderbolt 4 gear. Choose USB4 when the manufacturer specifies the speed and features your devices require. In either case, verify the individual PC’s port details: the connector shape and standard name alone cannot answer every compatibility, display or charging question.
