To clear Safari’s browsing history on a Mac, open Safari and choose History > Clear History, then choose a time period. To remove cookies and other stored website data, go to Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data and remove selected sites or all listed data. These controls do different things.
Choose what you want to remove
| Your goal | Safari control | What it affects |

Clear Safari browsing history
- Open Safari on your Mac.
- From the menu bar, choose History > Clear History.
- Choose how far back to clear from the pop-up menu, then confirm.
Clearing history removes Safari’s records of visited pages and related browsing items. Apple lists items such as the back and forward history for open pages, frequently visited sites, recent searches, page icons, saved snapshots for open pages, the downloaded-items list, sites added for Quick Website Search, and sites that requested location or notification access. Downloaded files themselves remain on your Mac. Apple’s Safari history instructions describe the items affected.

If Safari is set up with iCloud on this Mac and your other Apple devices, clearing history is reflected on those devices too. It does not erase history or other records that websites maintain independently.

Remove cookies and website data
- Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings from the menu bar.
- Click Privacy, then Manage Website Data.
- Select one or more websites and click Remove to remove their data, or click Remove All to remove all listed website data.
Removing cookies and other website data may sign you out or change how a site works. Apple also notes that removing this Safari data may change or remove data in other apps. See Apple’s instructions for clearing Safari cache and cookies.

Fix a problem with one website without clearing everything
- Open the site in a Safari Private Window to test whether the problem still occurs.
- If it works in the Private Window, open Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data.
- Select the affected site, click Remove, then reopen it in a normal window.
Have the site’s sign-in information available before removing its data. Apple’s Safari troubleshooting guidance recommends this targeted check and removal path. On older macOS versions, the menu may say Preferences instead of Settings; Apple’s guidance uses both labels.
