You can clear Safari history without deleting saved passwords or bookmarks. The key is to clear history, not separately stored website data: cookies and other site data can keep you signed in, while AutoFill information is not changed by the iPhone and iPad history-clearing action. The steps differ slightly on iPhone or iPad and Mac.
What clearing Safari history removes—and what it keeps
Safari history is the record of pages you visited. Website data is separate: cookies and other data can let websites remember your sign-in or settings. Clearing history does not itself delete bookmarks, and Apple says the iPhone and iPad history-clearing action does not change AutoFill information. However, removing website data can sign you out even if a saved password remains available.

On Mac, clearing history also removes related browser records such as recent searches and snapshots of open pages; downloaded files themselves are not deleted. Apple’s instructions are version-sensitive, so if a label or location differs, check the guide for your installed operating system.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Safari.
- Tap Clear History and Website Data.
- Choose the timeframe, then confirm by tapping Clear History.
Apple says this action does not change AutoFill information. If the control is gray, there may be no history or website data to clear, or Screen Time web content restrictions may be preventing the action. See Apple’s iPhone Safari history and website data instructions.

Remove selected history entries instead
To delete particular sites rather than a whole timeframe, open Safari, go to Bookmarks and then History, open the More menu, tap Select Websites, mark the entries, and tap the Trash button. This is useful when you want to retain the rest of your history.
Clear history on a Mac
- In Safari, choose History > Clear History.
- Choose how far back to remove history.
- Confirm the action.
Apple says this removes visited-page history and related records, including recent searches and page snapshots, but not downloaded files. If Safari is set up with iCloud on this Mac and other Apple devices, the history deletion also applies across them. See Apple’s Mac instructions for clearing browsing history.

If you use Safari profiles
Profiles keep history and website data separate. Check that the intended profile is active; Apple documents clearing history for a selected profile as well as clearing all history. Passwords information is shared between profiles. See Apple’s guide to Safari profiles on Mac.

Website data is a different control from history. On iPhone or iPad, the route is Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data > Remove Now. Apple says this clears data websites use to save login information for faster browsing, so a site may ask you to sign in again. This is not required to clear history.

On Mac, choose Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data. You can remove data for selected sites or all sites. Apple warns that removing cookies and website data may sign you out or change how websites behave. See its Mac guide to cache and cookies.

When Safari is enabled in iCloud, Safari data—including history and bookmarks—can stay up to date across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. A history deletion may therefore appear on your other devices too; it is not necessarily limited to the device where you tapped Clear. Apple treats bookmarks as a separate data type and says they are automatically archived and can be restored through iCloud.com. Clearing history itself does not delete bookmarks. See Apple’s guidance on keeping Safari in sync with iCloud and setting up iCloud for Safari.
