To play music from a USB drive in your car, connect it to a port that supports media data, then choose USB or the drive’s name from the audio source menu. The drive’s file system and audio files must also match what your specific vehicle supports; a USB socket, by itself, does not guarantee music playback.
Check compatibility before preparing a drive
Start with the audio or USB section of the owner’s manual for your exact model year, trim and infotainment system. Confirm that the port is intended for USB media playback, not just charging, and check the supported storage-device types, file systems, audio formats, and any folder, file-count or capacity limits.

Requirements vary even between vehicles from the same manufacturer. For example, Toyota’s 2022 RAV4 manual lists FAT 16/32 and a range of supported formats, including MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV/LPCM, FLAC, ALAC and Ogg Vorbis. A Toyota Supra manual recommends FAT32 and exFAT for its USB interfaces with data transfer. These are examples for particular systems, not universal requirements.
Do not assume that every car needs FAT32 or that every system plays MP3. Older Toyota systems, for instance, may support only MP3 and WMA; their manuals warn that other file types may not play or display correctly. Use the formats and limits specified for your own audio system.

Prepare the USB drive
- Back up anything already on the drive. Formatting erases its contents.
- Format it only if needed and only as the manual specifies. A format that works in one vehicle may not work in another.
- Copy compatible music files onto it. Keep the folder structure straightforward if your manual notes limits on folder depth or indexing.
- Check the manual’s device and file limits. Folder counts, file counts and playback behavior differ by system; do not infer them from another model’s specifications.
Connect the drive and select it as the source
- Locate the port identified in the manual for USB data or media playback. If the car has several ports, do not assume they all perform the same function.
- Insert the drive gently; do not force a connector or adapter.
- Open the car’s audio source controls and select USB or the displayed device name. Menu labels and steps vary by vehicle.
- Wait for the system to scan the drive, then choose a track or folder if prompted. Toyota’s 2025 Sequoia manual, for example, directs drivers to connect a flash drive and select the device name or USB from the source controls.
Troubleshoot when the car will not play USB music
No USB source appears
- Check that you used a port designated for media or data, rather than one intended only for charging.
- Reconnect the drive securely and confirm the manual supports the drive type and connection.
- If you are using an adapter, verify that it supports data transfer and is compatible with the car. A charging-only adapter will not enable stored-music playback.
The car displays a USB error
Inspect the drive and its connection, then check the manual’s error-message guidance. Toyota’s 2022 RAV4 manual distinguishes a USB-device or connection problem from a case where no supported music files are found.
The car says it cannot find music
- Make sure audio files are actually saved on the drive.
- Confirm that their formats are supported by this audio system.
- Check whether the system expects files in a particular location or has folder and file-count limits.
The RAV4 manual gives one model-specific example: its no-music message can appear when it finds no listed MP3, WMA or AAC files. That message is not a universal diagnostic for other vehicles.

Names, folders or playback order are wrong
Check the manual for supported naming methods, folder depth, file limits and ordering behavior. Some systems may not display or play unsupported file formats correctly, and scan behavior can differ between audio systems.

Reformatting may help only if the drive’s file system is incompatible. It erases stored data and cannot fix an unsupported port, audio format or drive type. Back up the files and verify the vehicle’s requirements before formatting.

Choosing a drive or adapter
A basic USB flash drive is the direct option for a car that supports playback from USB storage. Before buying one, verify the connector, data support, file system and formats required by the vehicle, along with any stated storage or indexing limits. The available manual examples do not establish one best brand, capacity or format for all cars.
If the car and drive have different connector types, an adapter or cable is only a possible solution after confirming that the car port supports media data and the adapter preserves data transfer. A charging connection alone is not enough.

If your existing audio system does not support USB music playback, a compatible aftermarket head unit may be an option, but fitment depends on the vehicle’s make, model, year, trim and installation requirements. Confirm compatibility for the specific car before purchasing equipment.
