Choose a steel wall planter by matching its finish, drainage, size and mounting method to the place it will hang and the plants it will hold. For outdoor use, look for an explicit metal and finish description, plan where excess water will go, and confirm that the wall and hardware can handle the planter’s wet, planted weight. A decorative metal basket is not automatically weather-ready or safe for every wall.
What to check before choosing a steel wall planter
Metal and protective finish
Check the product description for the specific metal and any protective finish, such as galvanizing or powder coating. Gardening Beyond’s buying guide discusses both finishes, but its recommendations are editorial guidance, not independent performance testing. Do not assume that a product described simply as an iron or steel planter is suitable for year-round outdoor exposure.

Materials vary by maker and model. Lump Sculpture Studio offers made-to-order wall planters in Corten steel, aluminum or stainless steel; PlanterCraft describes Corten steel and powder-coated aluminum in its broader planter range. These are separate product lines, not interchangeable specifications. A material name alone does not establish that a particular planter is rust-proof or maintenance-free.
Drainage, liners and water control
Decide how water will leave the container before planting it. Look for drainage holes, a liner or removable inner pot, and consider where runoff will land. A coco coir liner can hold the growing medium in a basket, but it does not replace checking the planter’s drainage design or protecting the wall below it. Follow the exact product’s planting and watering instructions.

For a made-to-order planter, ask whether drainage holes or an internal waterproofing membrane can be included. Lump Sculpture Studio lists both as options; confirm the configuration with the fabricator rather than assuming either comes standard.
Dimensions and intended plants
Compare width and depth with the wall or railing space, then consider the room the roots and mature plant will need. Gardening Beyond’s 2026 guide reports a 16-inch LaLaGreen wall-planter two-pack with coco coir liners. Treat that as a reported listing, not a current availability guarantee or an independently verified test; check the present product details before buying.

Mounting and filled weight
Check whether mounting brackets are included and whether the supplied or separately purchased hardware is compatible with your actual wall or railing. The Gardening Beyond guide says the cited LaLaGreen set does not include brackets and recommends checking mounting compatibility.

Plan around the full, wet load—not just the empty planter’s weight. Soil and retained water add weight, and the available sources do not establish a safe load rating for the cited consumer basket. Confirm the filled weight with the product maker and choose attachment hardware appropriate to the substrate. Do not rely on a universal anchor recommendation: wall construction and installation conditions differ.

PlanterCraft describes its own planter range as using 11-gauge steel, about 1/8 inch thick, with welded construction and drainage holes. That manufacturer specification is context about its range, not evidence that those products are wall-mounted. Likewise, Planters Unlimited’s project specification PDF describes weathering-steel and powder-coated carbon-steel planter and wall-section materials; it should not be treated as a specification for a consumer wall basket.

Questions to settle before installation
- Is the planter intended for the exposure and climate at the chosen location, and does its description name the metal and finish?
- Where will water drain, and do the liner or inner pot and the container’s drainage suit the plants?
- Does the planter include brackets, and are the mounting method and hardware suitable for the actual substrate?
- What will the planter weigh when filled and wet, and has the maker provided installation guidance for that load?
- For a custom order, are the requested dimensions, drainage, waterproofing and supports specified in the quote?
