USB Host Camera on Fruit Jam: Setup, Preview, and Photo Capture

A practical guide to using an MJPEG USB webcam with Adafruit Fruit Jam for DVI preview and photo capture, including setup, storage, and printer compatibility.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can connect a compatible USB webcam to Adafruit Fruit Jam, preview its feed over DVI, and save JPEG photos. The most practical starting point is a camera that supports MJPEG at 320×240 or lower: Adafruit’s guide names the Logitech C270 and C920 as successfully tested examples. Begin at 320×240 for a live preview; 640×480 is also supported, but takes longer to save and cannot be previewed at high frame rates.

What you need to get started

  • An Adafruit Fruit Jam and a standard USB webcam that supports MJPEG at 320×240 or lower. The C270 and C920 are examples Adafruit reports testing successfully; that does not establish compatibility for every revision or every webcam. See Adafruit’s USB Host Camera Basics.
  • A DVI display and the appropriate display connection if you want a live preview.
  • A writable photo destination: a mounted SD card or the board’s CPSAVES drive. An SD card is optional.

Fruit Jam has two exposed USB host ports, as described in Adafruit’s hardware guide. Camera support uses Adafruit’s CircuitPython USB Host Camera library and depends on isochronous USB host communication.

Check CircuitPython and camera compatibility

Adafruit’s camera guide identified CircuitPython 11.0.0.alpha-1 as the development build providing the required isochronous USB host support. That version reference was published in September 2026, so check current CircuitPython downloads and library compatibility for your board before installing or following version-specific steps. Do not assume a different or newer release has the same support without confirming it.

Camera format matters: look for MJPEG support and a 320×240-or-lower mode in the specifications for the exact webcam. A camera that looks similar to a tested model is not necessarily equivalent, and the guide does not claim that every UVC webcam or revision works.

  • The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
  • C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

Set up and detect the webcam

  1. Connect the webcam to one of Fruit Jam’s USB host ports.
  2. In your CircuitPython program, import and create the camera with adafruit_usb_host_camera.UVCCamera(). The camera guide’s detection process searches attached USB devices; retry detection if the board starts before the webcam is plugged in.
  3. Select a supported size with find_mode(width, height). This method chooses the closest mode the camera reports, so confirm the selected mode is suitable for your intended preview or capture.
  4. Call start(mode) to begin receiving frames.

For 320×240 isochronous webcam frames, Adafruit recommends this setting in settings.toml as a useful starting point:

CIRCUITPY_USB_HOST_ISO_BUFFER_SIZE = 16384

It is a guide-recommended value for that mode, not a universal requirement for every camera or resolution.

Choose a resolution for preview or capture

Camera mode What Adafruit’s guide says Best fit
320×240 Recommended for a live DVI preview; the guide says it works best for that use. Start here when you want to see the camera feed on screen.
640×480 Also works, but saving photos takes longer and the display cannot preview it at high frame rates. Use when the larger capture size matters more than preview responsiveness.

To show a preview, use camera.bitmap and update_bitmap(). Adafruit recommends picogame to maximize preview frame rate. These are guide instructions, not independent performance measurements.

Capture and save photos

Use save_jpeg() with a writable destination to capture a JPEG. The sample guide saves files under /saves/. When an SD card is mounted, the camera-effects project uses it for storage; without a mounted SD card, it saves to CPSAVES. Ensure the chosen path exists and is writable. The SD card is removable-storage convenience, not a prerequisite.

Optional: send a photo to a BLE thermal printer

Adafruit’s separate printer project captures a photo and sends it over Bluetooth Low Energy to a cat-style thermal printer. Its code supports the GD02 and MXW01 models; other printers may require changes to the printer library and are not established as compatible by the guide. Printing is an optional extension, not part of the requirements for previewing or saving camera images. See the Fruit Jam cat-printer project.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • The camera is not detected: Confirm it is connected to a USB host port, then retry device detection. The guide specifically notes that the board may start before the webcam is plugged in.
  • The camera does not offer the mode you requested: Check the modes it reports and use find_mode(width, height) to select the closest available one. A 320×240-or-lower MJPEG mode is the recommended starting point.
  • The preview is sluggish: Try 320×240 rather than 640×480, and use picogame as Adafruit recommends for maximizing preview FPS.
  • Saving fails: Check that the destination is writable. The sample uses /saves/; storage goes to SD when mounted and CPSAVES otherwise.
  • The printer does not respond: Verify that it is a GD02 or MXW01. Similar appearance or BLE support alone does not establish compatibility with the project code.
