It works with additional nodes, or points, placed around the home so devices can connect through one network from multiple locations. In other words, mesh Wi-Fi describes a system, not simply a different label for a standalone router.
What makes a router part of a mesh system?
A mesh setup has a main unit connected to the internet service and one or more additional connectivity points. The units coordinate to provide Wi-Fi around the home as a single network. Google describes a mesh network as connectivity devices, such as Wi-Fi routers, acting as one network with multiple sources of connectivity around the house. Google Home Help explains mesh networks.

Compatible units can share a network name and password. For example, TP-Link says its Deco mesh system uses one network name and password across its nodes; that detail applies to the product family described, not necessarily every mesh system. TP-Link explains how its Deco mesh system works.

The main router and other nodes need a backhaul connection to carry traffic between them. Depending on the product, that link may be wireless or may use Ethernet. NETGEAR defines backhaul as communication between the mesh router and satellites. NETGEAR explains mesh backhaul.

- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Wireless backhaul
With wireless backhaul, nodes communicate over Wi-Fi. This avoids running Ethernet between units, but the available connection and system behavior depend on the model and setup.
Ethernet backhaul
Some systems allow compatible units to connect directly over Ethernet. TP-Link says compatible Deco access points prefer Ethernet for transmission when directly connected this way. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility and setup guidance; Ethernet-backhaul support and behavior are not universal.

What problem does mesh Wi-Fi address?
A single router may struggle to provide a strong signal everywhere in a home because walls and distance weaken or obstruct the connection. Additional mesh points can provide connectivity from more locations. Google identifies walls and distance as reasons one router may not reach every room reliably.

Mesh does not guarantee a faster internet connection or a particular coverage area. Results depend on the specific system, node placement, home layout, internet service and other conditions; a speed or coverage claim needs model-specific evidence.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Does any mesh router work with any mesh point?
No. Compatibility depends on the product and generation. For example, Google says Nest Wifi Pro cannot be combined in a mesh network with Nest Wifi routers or points or Google Wifi points. Before adding a node or replacing a router, verify that the manufacturer lists the exact models as compatible.
Mesh router versus a standalone router
| Feature | Standalone router | Wi-Fi mesh system |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | One router provides the Wi-Fi network. | A main router or gateway works with additional nodes or points. |
| Where Wi-Fi comes from | Primarily from the router’s location. | From multiple locations through the main unit and nodes. |
| Network experience | Depends on the router and any separately configured access points. | Designed for the units to provide one network; exact features vary by system. |
| Communication between units | Not applicable to a single-router setup. | Nodes use a backhaul connection, which may be wireless or Ethernet when supported. |
What to check when choosing a mesh system
- Compatibility: Confirm the exact router and node models can work together, including across generations.
- Node placement and quantity: Consider where coverage is weak and where you can place additional points; do not assume a stated coverage figure will match every home.
- Backhaul options: Check whether the system supports Ethernet backhaul if you can wire units together.
- Home conditions: Walls, distance and layout affect signal, so a mesh system is not a guaranteed speed upgrade.
Where the term comes from
“Wi-Fi mesh router” is common consumer wording rather than a formal standards-body definition. Google product manager Sanjay Noronha described a mesh network as “a group of routers that communicate wirelessly to each other to create a single Wi-Fi network that provides a blanket of connectivity.” That is Google’s explanatory description, not a formal technical standard.
