Choose USB-C Power Delivery (PD) if your exact computer supports charging through the USB-C port and the charger and cable meet its documented power requirements. Choose a barrel-plug charger if your computer requires that input and the adapter matches the model’s specified output and connector. Neither plug shape alone confirms compatibility.
What matters most: does your computer support that input?
USB-C is a connector; USB Power Delivery is a power system that lets a compatible source and device negotiate a supported power level. A USB-C port’s shape does not prove that it accepts charging. Check the computer’s manual or manufacturer support page for the specific port and model requirements. Barrel-plug chargers also require model-by-model verification. A set of interchangeable tips is not a universal electrical standard: confirm the computer’s documented input requirements and that the selected adapter’s output and connector match. Start with the original adapter’s output label and the computer manual.

How much power do you need?
Use the wattage and voltage requirements in your computer’s documentation rather than assuming that a higher-wattage charger will work or charge faster. For USB-C PD, the computer and source negotiate a supported level; the cable also needs to support the required power. USB-IF describes PD 3.1 as extending the specification’s capability up to 240 W. Its overview gives fixed-voltage capabilities of 28 V for up to 140 W, 36 V for up to 180 W, and 48 V for up to 240 W. Requirements can differ even among computers that have USB-C ports. Lenovo’s ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 guidance says, “The USB Type-C connector is not designed as the primary power input port.” For that model, Lenovo lists 20 V at 2.25 A for charging while asleep, hibernating or powered off, and lists higher output combinations as capable of charging the computer. This is a single-model example, not a general laptop threshold; check your own model’s guidance and intended operating state.
Choose the right charger for your computer
- Find the exact model number. Check the computer’s manual or manufacturer support page, not just the name of its product line.
- Confirm the charging input. If considering USB-C PD, verify that the specific port supports charging. If the computer requires a barrel input, use the manufacturer’s documented adapter type.
- Match the power requirements. Compare the documented voltage, current or wattage with the charger output. For USB-C, verify that both the charger and cable can supply the needed power.
- Check operating-state requirements. Determine whether the adapter can power the computer during use or only charge it in sleep, hibernation or powered-off states.
- For barrel plugs, verify the tip and adapter output. Do not assume a tip fits electrically because it fits physically; confirm the manufacturer’s specified connector and output.
Is a USB-C-to-barrel cable a workaround?
Not automatically. A conversion cable does not make a computer that lacks USB-C charging support compatible with USB-C PD. Consider one only if the computer manufacturer documents that arrangement for your exact model and the required output and connector are verified. The cited manufacturer guidance is model-specific; it does not certify generic USB-C-to-barrel cables.

Practical recommendation
If your computer explicitly supports USB-C charging, a USB-C PD charger can be a convenient option for it and other compatible devices, provided the charger and cable meet the computer’s requirements. A 100 W USB-C PD charger is a product category to consider only when your model’s documented needs and USB-C support make it suitable. If the computer requires barrel power, choose an adapter whose output and tip are specified for that exact model; a multi-tip kit alone is not proof of a match.
