USB-C Hub vs. SSD Dock for Steam Deck and ROG Ally: Which Do You Need?

A USB-C hub or powered dock adds display and peripheral connections; an SSD dock is for users who specifically need an attached drive. Check each model’s power, video, ports, and drive support.

Choose a USB-C hub or dock for a monitor, peripherals, Ethernet, or charging. Choose an SSD dock only if you also need a drive connection for external storage or a drive-cloning workflow. These accessories solve different problems, and the exact ports, video support, and power delivery depend on the model.

What’s the difference?

A USB-C hub expands the handheld’s connections. Depending on its specifications, it may provide video output, USB ports, Ethernet, and power passthrough. A dock is often a hub designed for a desk or TV setup, sometimes with a stand or a larger selection of ports; the label alone does not guarantee any particular feature.

An SSD dock adds a connection for a storage drive. Some products combine drive storage with hub features, but do not assume that a standard hub has an SSD slot—or that a product called an SSD dock provides the display and charging connections you need. Check the product’s port list and supported drive type.

Which one should you choose?

Choose a basic USB-C hub for a few connections

If you mainly want to connect a display and a keyboard, mouse, or other peripheral, a compact USB-C hub is usually the more direct choice. Confirm that its USB-C connection supports video for your handheld and that it has the specific ports you need. Not every USB-C hub supports video, Ethernet, or charging passthrough.

SABRENT Dual-Bay USB-C Hard Drive Docking Station & Cloner (EC-CH2B) | Offline 1-to-1 cloner, 2.5in/3.5in SATA HDD & SSD, USB-C cable included, 5Gbps, Hot-swap, No IDE support
  • OFFLINE CLONER, NO COMPUTER NEEDED: Copy one SATA drive to another at the press of a button, up to 60MBps, with the dock unplugged from any PC. Target drive must be the same size as the source or larger.
  • READS AND WRITES TWO DRIVES AT ONCE: Both bays mount as separate drives when connected to a computer over USB, so you can move files between them or work off both. Hot-swappable, tool-free, with an HDD access LED per bay.
  • SATA ONLY, 2.5in AND 3.5in: Fits bare 2.5in and 3.5in SATA hard drives and SATA SSDs. It does NOT support IDE/PATA drives, drives with a 4-pin Molex power connector, M.2 or NVMe drives, and drives are not included.
  • WHAT COMES IN THE BOX: Docking station, power adapter and a USB Type-C cable. The cable is USB-C on the dock end - check your computer has a USB-C port or add your own USB-C to USB-A cable before you order.
  • USB 3.0 SPEEDS UP TO 5GBPS: Plug and play on Windows and Mac with no drivers to install. Real-world speed is set by the drives you fit - a mechanical hard drive will not reach 5Gbps, and offline cloning runs up to 60MBps by design.

Choose a powered dock for a desk or TV setup

A powered dock is a better fit when you want to leave the handheld connected to a display, several peripherals, wired networking, and a charger. Check whether a power adapter is included, how much power reaches the handheld, and whether the dock’s video output matches your monitor or TV. A dock may allocate some incoming power to its own operation and connected devices.

Choose an SSD dock only when you need its drive connection

Use a storage-oriented dock if you specifically want a drive attached through it—for example, for extra game storage or backups. If your goal is to replace the handheld’s internal SSD, that is a separate upgrade. ASUS describes using an external SSD enclosure to clone a current drive before replacement; an enclosure used for cloning is not necessarily a dock for everyday play.

What to check before buying

  • Video: Confirm HDMI or DisplayPort support, the resolution and refresh rate offered, and whether the dock’s output is compatible with your screen.
  • Power: Check USB-C Power Delivery, the power adapter’s capacity, whether an adapter is included, and how much power remains available to the handheld with peripherals attached.
  • Ports: Match the USB-A and USB-C port types and speeds to your devices. Add Ethernet or audio only if you need them, and verify that the specific model includes them.
  • Storage: If the product has an SSD bay or enclosure, verify the supported drive size and protocol. A dock’s drive compatibility is not determined by the handheld’s internal SSD dimensions.
  • Setup: Consider whether you want a stand, a permanently connected desk arrangement, or a small hub to carry. Make sure its cable and layout work with your handheld and case.

External storage is not an internal SSD upgrade

An external drive connected through a dock remains external; it does not replace the handheld’s internal storage. For an internal upgrade, follow instructions for the precise handheld model and confirm the replacement drive and enclosure fit that process.

ASUS’s upgrade guidance distinguishes the original ROG Ally’s M.2 2230 internal SSD from the M.2 2280 drives used by the ROG Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally family. ASUS describes an external enclosure as an option for cloning before replacement. These internal-drive sizes do not establish which drives a separate dock supports; check that accessory’s own specification. ASUS ROG Ally SSD upgrade guidance.

Does docking improve performance?

No—not on Steam Deck. Valve says docking is “more akin to plugging a USB-C hub into a PC” and that the Deck runs at full performance in portable mode. Treat a dock as a way to add connections, not as a gaming-performance upgrade. Steam Deck FAQ.
