You may be able to turn an old server into a home NAS with OpenMediaVault (OMV), provided its hardware is supported by Debian and its storage and network components are in usable condition. OMV 8 (Synchrony) documents two current routes: install from an ISO on compatible bare-metal hardware, or install on an existing Debian 13 (Trixie) system. The right route depends on the machine you have; the available information does not establish that any particular old server is compatible or that this installation has been completed.
What OpenMediaVault adds to an old server
OpenMediaVault is Debian-based NAS software with a web administration interface. It is designed primarily for homes and small home offices, and supports file access over protocols including SMB/CIFS and NFS. In practice, that lets a suitably configured server provide shared storage to devices on your network without requiring a dedicated NAS appliance. See the OpenMediaVault 8 documentation overview for its platform and supported services.

Reusing hardware is not automatically cheaper or better. The server’s condition, drive capacity, supported interfaces, power use, noise, and the amount of Linux maintenance you are willing to handle all matter. There are no measurements here for the particular server’s power draw, performance, reliability, or cost, so those should be checked on your own machine rather than assumed.

Start with the model and actual components, not just the age of the machine. OMV depends on Debian-compatible hardware; check the processor architecture, available RAM, network adapter, storage controller, drive connections, and physical bays. Debian support is a prerequisite, not a promise that every feature or workload will perform well.

Memory guidance
OMV’s prerequisites documentation lists 1 GiB of RAM as a minimum, recommends at least 4 GiB for novice administrators, and calls 8 GiB best practice for basic operations in the default installation. These are project recommendations, not measured requirements for every workload. File serving is a different demand from adding services such as media streaming or containers, and the documentation does not establish how an unspecified old server will perform. See OpenMediaVault 8 prerequisites.
Storage connections and drive condition
Check which interfaces the server actually has—such as SATA or a supported host bus adapter (HBA)—and whether the drives are healthy. OMV supports a range of storage hardware subject to Debian support, but disk-health monitoring depends on the connection too. The documentation says SMART is supported for disks connected to an HBA in pass-through mode; for USB-connected devices, its FAQ says support relies on smartmontools auto-detection. Confirm that health information is available through your particular controller or enclosure before relying on it. See the OMV FAQ.

Keep the operating system and data on separate drives
OMV’s normal arrangement uses one disk for the operating system and a different disk for data. Its prerequisites state: “The data storage drive must be a different disk drive than the system disk drive where the operating system is installed.” Using additional partitions on the OS disk is a specialized exception, not the ordinary setup. Check the server’s available bays and connections before planning the layout; existing drives may be enough if they are usable and provide sufficient capacity.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Confirm that the server has a compatible SATA connection, the right form factor and a free bay, and check the drive’s condition. No specific model or performance gain is established here. An additional internal hard drive makes sense only if you need more data capacity.

- High-Speed Data Transmission: The D4-320 hard drive enclosure (a DAS, NOT a NAS) utilizes the USB 3.2 Gen2 protocol, achieving high-speed data transmission of up to 10Gbps. When equipped with four hard drives, the actual read/write speed can reach up to 1,016 MB/s (combined read/write with four SATA III HDDs of 8TB each). With just one SSD installed, the read speed effortlessly reaches 510 MB/s (SATA III 1TB SSD). The D4-320 supports a single HDD up to 30TB, with a total capacity of 120TB, and is compatible with various hard drives, including 3.5-inch SATA hard drives, 2.5-inch SATA hard drives, and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs
- Plug-and-Play Compatibility: The D4-320 USB storage supports 4 individual disks (NO RAID function), and is plug-and-play, eliminating the need for drivers. It is highly compatible with MAC, Windows, and Linux operating systems. The USB Type-C interface supports various computer interfaces, including USB 3.0, USB 3.1, USB 3.2, Thunderbolt 3, and Thunderbolt 4
- Hot Swappable Convenience: The D4-320 HDD enclosure supports hot swapping, allowing users to replace hard disks without powering off the device. This feature enhances convenience and efficiency in data transfer processes
- Tool-Free Hard Drive Management: Featuring a tool-free hard drive tray design, the D4-320 external HDD enclosure enables easy installation and removal of hard drives without requiring additional tools. Furthermore, the D4-320 incorporates TerraMaster's unique Push-lock design, automatically securing the hard drive tray upon insertion, preventing the hard drive from falling out or disconnecting
- Efficient Heat Dissipation and Quieter Operation: The D4-320 direct attached storage incorporates an intelligent temperature-controlled fan for optimal heat dissipation. Additionally, specialized sound-absorbing panels and vibration damping measures contribute to a quieter operation, with noise levels reduced by up to 50% compared to the previous generation. In standby mode, the noise level drops below 21 dB(A), creating a remarkably quiet user environment
A USB flash drive can be used to create installation media, but it is a poor default for the installed OS. OMV warns that it does not optimize writes to the system disk when that disk is a USB flash drive, and that the media may start failing within weeks. Keep that separate from using a USB stick temporarily to install the system. OMV also advises against using USB-connected drives for production RAID arrays; see its RAID documentation.

ISO on compatible AMD64 hardware
The project offers an ISO that you can write to bootable media. Its installer handles disk and partition selection, network-interface configuration, and initial setup. The installer is text-based, which suits a headless server without a monitor or graphical desktop. Carefully identify the target disk during setup: selecting a disk for installation can erase its existing contents.
Install on an existing Debian 13 system
If the machine already runs Debian 13, the project documents a command-line installation method. Follow the current procedure on the official install page rather than relying on an old command copied from another guide; installation details may change between releases. This route assumes you have a suitable Debian installation and are comfortable administering it.

It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Plan for the risks of reusing hardware
- Protect data before changing disks. Preserve a separate backup before reformatting or rebuilding storage. RAID is not a substitute for a backup against deletion, theft, or loss of the server’s location.
- Do not infer compatibility from age or appearance. The exact server model, controller, network link and drive condition determine what can be reused.
- Check the real operating costs. Measure the server’s power use and consider its noise, size and maintenance needs. No universal cost or performance winner between reuse and buying a NAS is established here.
- Match expectations to the workload. The published memory guidance covers basic use; it does not guarantee results for streaming, containers, or other additional services.
