For storage that stays attached while you play, a microSD card is the most straightforward option for both Steam Deck and the 2023 ROG Ally: Valve documents microSD expansion across Steam Deck models, and ASUS lists a UHS-II microSD slot on the 2023 Ally. An external SSD is more practical for a docked or desk setup, but its game-library compatibility depends on the device’s operating system and configuration. The official information cited here does not show that an external SSD loads games faster than a microSD card.
Which should you choose?
- Choose microSD for portable expansion: it fits the handheld’s card slot, so you can play without carrying or connecting a separate drive.
- Consider an external SSD for a docked setup: it can make sense when the handheld stays near a dock or desk, provided your operating system and game-library setup support the drive.
- Do not choose by assumed loading speed: the cited official sources do not provide a controlled, like-for-like game-loading comparison between microSD and external SSD storage.
What each device officially supports
Steam Deck
Valve says all Steam Deck models support storage expansion with microSD cards. Its hardware page also lists built-in eMMC or NVMe SSD configurations, depending on model. Treat those as model configurations rather than a guarantee of what is currently available in every market; check Valve’s Steam Deck hardware page for current product details.

ROG Ally
ASUS lists a dedicated UHS-II microSD slot on the 2023 ROG Ally. That specification applies to the cited 2023 model; do not assume it describes every later ROG Ally. Check the relevant model’s official specifications before buying a card. ASUS’s 2023 ROG Ally product page is the source for that slot detail.

Valve documents USB-C docks and hubs for Steam Deck, including connections for displays, network, USB peripherals, and power. This makes a docked external-drive arrangement plausible, but it does not establish that every SSD enclosure, hub, file system, or game launcher will work in every setup. Steam Support’s docking guidance describes the supported dock and hub context. For ROG Ally, confirm the operating-system and library steps for your specific setup; the cited official material does not document one shared external game-library workflow for both handhelds.

How the options compare
| Decision point | microSD card | External SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Official support in the cited sources | Valve documents microSD expansion on all Steam Deck models; ASUS specifies a UHS-II slot on the 2023 ROG Ally. | Valve documents USB-C docks, hubs, and peripherals for Steam Deck. The cited sources do not establish a shared external game-library workflow for both devices. |
| Portability | Sits in the device’s card slot, without an external cable during play. | Requires carrying and connecting a separate drive and cable; best suited to a docked or stationary arrangement. |
| Game-loading evidence | No matched game-loading result is provided by the cited official specifications. | No matched game-loading result against microSD is provided by the cited official sources. |
| Best fit | Simple storage that remains attached to the handheld. | A desk or dock setup, after verifying operating-system and game-library compatibility. |
Does an external SSD load games faster?
The cited documentation does not settle that question. Interface specifications alone cannot establish how quickly a particular game loads from a specific card or external drive. No controlled, like-for-like microSD-versus-external-SSD game-loading benchmark is provided here, so a general speed advantage or time difference would be unsupported.
If loading speed is decisive, look for an independent test that compares the same handheld, game, game version, and relevant storage setup. A result from one configuration should not be treated as a guarantee for another card, enclosure, hub, operating system, or title.

What to check before buying
- Confirm the model: the cited UHS-II specification is for the 2023 ROG Ally, while Valve’s cited microSD expansion statement covers all Steam Deck models.
- Check capacity and compatibility: use the current manufacturer information for your exact device and card. Lexar’s 2026 Q1 microSD compatibility list includes Steam Deck and ROG Ally in its gaming-device listing; it is a manufacturer compatibility list, not a neutral performance comparison.
- For an external SSD, verify the whole connection: check that the drive, enclosure, hub or dock, operating system, and game-library setup work together. Valve’s dock guidance supports USB peripherals in a Deck docked setup, but is not a universal compatibility guarantee.
- Do not infer a specific file system or formatting procedure from the slot or dock specification. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ addresses microSD file-system format, but the cited material here does not establish a complete current formatting walkthrough for every device and setup.
Bottom line for a handheld setup
For either device, microSD is the better-supported route when you want storage that stays with the handheld. An external SSD may suit a docked Steam Deck arrangement or another stationary setup, but verify game-library support for your exact operating system and configuration. Choose based on convenience, compatibility, and matched tests—not an assumed speed win.
