Ethereum exchange-flow charts track ETH moving between addresses a data provider associates with exchanges. They do not directly show executed trades, customer withdrawals, or intent to sell. A historical value can also change when a provider updates its exchange-wallet labels—without any new transfer having occurred on the date shown.
To interpret a change responsibly, check the metric’s scope and units, record when you retrieved it, and distinguish revisions to address attribution from transfers that happened on-chain.

What Ethereum exchange-flow metrics measure
Inflow, outflow, and netflow describe transfers involving addresses classified by a provider as belonging to exchanges. They are measurements of on-chain address activity under that provider’s labeling—not direct observations of trading or customer intent. CryptoQuant’s ETH exchange-flow API documentation describes ETH inflow and exchange-reserve series; its exchange-flow guide cautions that internal wallet movements can appear as outflows.

- Inflow: ETH transferred into addresses the provider associates with an exchange.
- Outflow: ETH transferred from those associated addresses. It does not prove a customer withdrew ETH or that the exchange ceased holding it.
- Netflow: Inflow minus outflow for the selected period and address universe. Positive netflow means a net classified transfer toward exchange addresses; negative netflow means the reverse.
- Reserve: The ETH balance attributed to exchange addresses at a point in time. It is a balance, not a transfer measure.
- USD reserve: A valuation based on both the attributed ETH balance and ETH’s price. It can change because price moved even if the ETH balance did not.
CryptoQuant and Glassnode describe provider-specific approaches to identifying exchange addresses, including curated labels and analytical techniques. Their series should not be assumed to cover the same addresses or to be directly interchangeable.

Why Ethereum exchange flows can change in the past
A provider’s exchange-address set can evolve as it discovers, adds, or validates wallets. CryptoQuant says historical ETH values may change as its exchange-wallet clustering is updated, and explicitly states: “This endpoint does not support Point-In-Time (PIT) accuracy due to periodic updates to wallet address clustering.” Its documentation specifies an automatic update on Tuesdays at 00:00 UTC. A value retrieved for an earlier date can therefore differ from a later retrieval: that is a change in the data vintage, not evidence of a transfer newly occurring on that earlier date.
CryptoQuant also warns that a large apparent outflow can reflect a move between wallets operated by the same exchange. Its example describes Bitcoin, not a measured Ethereum event; the general caution is that incomplete ownership attribution can make internal movements look like funds leaving an exchange.

Glassnode likewise says its exchange metrics use labeled exchange addresses alongside data-science and statistical inputs, and that the metrics are mutable, with recent points subject to slight fluctuations. This supports caution about label-dependent data, but does not establish that providers update on the same schedule or revise values by the same amount. The reviewed documentation does not quantify how often Ethereum values materially change or the typical size of a revision.

- Record the series as retrieved. Note the provider, exact metric name, exchange or entity scope, units, interval, timezone, and retrieval date and time. Save the export or screenshot if you need to reproduce the reading later.
- Check whether the value is ETH or USD. For a USD-denominated reserve, compare the ETH balance and ETH price before attributing a change to more or fewer coins.
- Confirm which exchange universe is selected. Determine whether the chart covers all exchanges, spot exchanges, derivatives exchanges, or a named venue. CryptoQuant documents separate all-exchange, spot-exchange, and derivative-exchange aggregates for ETH.
- Check for methodology or update context. Before describing a sharp change in an old part of the chart as new market activity, check the provider’s notes and documentation. CryptoQuant warns that its historical ETH series can be revised after clustering updates.
- Compare flows with reserves and transaction context. Flow records classified address movement; reserve records attributed balances. Where transaction or address details are available, inspect them, but do not treat either chart alone as evidence of a sale, a customer withdrawal, or a price direction.
- Keep providers’ series separate unless equivalence is established. State each provider’s definition and scope. The documentation does not supply a validated conversion or universal reconciliation method between their datasets.
- Separate proof-of-reserves from broader exchange balances. Glassnode says its proof-of-reserves measures use addresses officially communicated by an exchange, a subset of addresses included in its broader exchange metrics. Do not present the narrower set as the full exchange balance.
What to say when a chart changes
For a historical revision, describe the value as changed in the provider’s current series and give both retrieval dates if you have retained earlier data. Do not say a transfer happened again on the historical date. For a current-period outflow, describe it as ETH moving from addresses classified as exchange-associated, and name the provider and scope. Avoid translating that reading into “investors withdrew” or “investors sold” unless separate evidence establishes those actions.

If comparing providers, report their figures and definitions separately. Differences may reflect address coverage, labeling, scope, units, or update practices; the documentation does not establish a complete method for reconciling them.
