Exchange netflow measures net ETH movement into or out of exchange wallets during a period; exchange reserves measure the ETH balance attributed to those wallets at a point in time. Netflow is a flow, while reserves are a stock. Positive netflow or rising reserves can indicate more ETH held by exchanges, but neither proves that holders intend to sell or predicts a price move.
What Ethereum exchange netflow measures
Netflow is the difference between the ETH entering and leaving a defined set of exchange wallets over a selected interval:

Netflow = exchange inflow − exchange outflow. CryptoQuant states the formula as “Exchange Inflow – Outflow = Netflow” in its Exchange In/Outflow and Netflow guide.

- Negative netflow: more ETH left than entered during the interval.
The interval matters: a daily netflow describes movement over that day, not the total balance of exchange wallets. CryptoQuant publishes ETH exchange-flow charts at Ethereum Exchange Flows.

What Ethereum exchange reserves measure
Exchange reserves are the amount of ETH attributed to exchange addresses at a given time. CryptoQuant defines Exchange Reserve as “The total amount of coins held in the exchange addresses” in its Exchange Reserve guide.
A rising reserve means the attributed balance has grown; a falling reserve means it has shrunk. The metric reflects the balance left after movements, rather than the net movement during one particular interval. CryptoQuant also provides ETH reserve charts through its Ethereum Exchange Flows page.
How the two metrics relate—and why they can diverge
Netflow is a change over a period; reserves are a balance at a point in time. Net movement into exchanges tends to add to the attributed reserve, and net movement out tends to reduce it. But a large daily netflow can be small relative to the existing reserve, while a series of smaller netflows can build into a meaningful balance change.

Charts may also differ because they use different exchange groups, time intervals, units, or smoothing. CryptoQuant distinguishes all-exchange, spot-exchange, and derivative-exchange groupings for ETH. A chart for spot venues is not directly comparable with one covering all exchanges unless the scope is aligned.
Wallet attribution is another source of variation. CryptoQuant periodically updates exchange-wallet coverage as addresses are discovered and validated. Its ETH Exchange Flows API guide says the endpoint does not support Point-In-Time accuracy because wallet-address clustering is updated periodically; consequently, a historical figure may differ from a later download. Glassnode says its exchange balances rely on an address-label database built from exchange-published information and proprietary clustering. Its ETH exchange-volume chart also describes using a seven-day EMA to make broader trends easier to see. Such smoothing can make a chart look different from a raw series.
What movements may suggest—and what they cannot prove
Positive netflow or rising reserves
More ETH entering exchange wallets, or a growing exchange-attributed balance, can mean more supply is available on exchanges and may be associated with selling pressure. A transfer by itself does not reveal the holder’s intention: ETH may be moved for trading, custody, collateral, or another purpose. It is not proof that a sale will follow.

Negative netflow or falling reserves
More ETH leaving than entering, or a declining attributed balance, is consistent with ETH moving away from exchanges, including to self-custody. It does not establish that the recipient intends to hold long term, nor does it prove accumulation.

- Exchange universe: Confirm whether each covers all exchanges, spot venues, or derivative venues.
- Metric and units: Distinguish netflow from gross inflow or outflow, and ETH-denominated values from USD-valued balances.
- Time interval: Match daily, hourly, or other aggregation periods.
- Smoothing: Check whether a chart shows raw data or a moving average, such as a seven-day EMA.
- Wallet coverage and revisions: Compare attribution methods and note that address clustering or labels may be updated, changing historical values.
CryptoQuant’s ETH charts and API documentation, along with Glassnode’s Ethereum exchange-volume chart, illustrate provider-specific data and methodology. Their readings should not be assumed to match exactly.
Which metric should you use?
Use netflow when the question is how ETH moved into or out of exchanges over a chosen period. Use reserves when the question is how much ETH is attributed to exchange wallets at a particular time, or how that balance has changed over a longer view. Looking at both can add context: flows show recent movement, while reserves show the resulting balance trend.
