There is no single wattage that suits every phone, tablet, or laptop. Look up your exact model’s recommended adapter and charging protocol, then buy a charger that meets or exceeds that wattage and supports USB Power Delivery (USB PD). The number on a charger is the most it can supply, not the power it pushes into the device.
The charger’s wattage is a ceiling, not a push
Dell describes USB Power Delivery as “an industry standard that allows USB-C devices to negotiate how much power flows between them.” The charger offers power levels, the device picks one it supports, and the charger’s rating is the upper limit. A 100W charger does not force 100W into a phone that accepts far less.

The standard itself reaches very high. The USB Implementers Forum says USB PD 3.1 (announced in 2021) allows up to 240W over a full-featured Type-C cable and connector. It lists 28V, 36V, and 48V fixed voltage levels for the 140W, 180W, and 240W tiers. That is what the standard can do. It is not what a normal phone or laptop needs, so don’t treat 240W as a target.

How to find your device’s wattage
- Find the exact model name or number (in Settings, on the underside of a laptop, or on the box).
- Open the manufacturer’s support or specification page for that model and find the recommended or included adapter wattage.
- Note the protocol. Most devices use USB PD, and some phones also want PPS (Programmable Power Supply) for their fastest mode.
- Check the cable’s power rating as well as the charger’s.
The original adapter’s label is a good fallback: it usually lists the wattage and the voltage/current profiles.

These are model examples, not market averages. No independent study turned up a universal wattage band for phones, tablets, or laptops, so treat any “phones need X, laptops need Y” rule of thumb with suspicion. Google says charging speed can vary with the charger and cable, and not every Pixel reaches its fastest rate with every PD adapter, so check the page for your specific phone.
Can you use a higher-wattage charger?
Generally yes, with a compatible PD charger, because the device draws only what it requests. Apple says a USB-C charging Mac can charge with an adapter of higher or lower wattage than its recommendation. HP gives similar guidance: the laptop requests the amount it needs. Confirm this for your own device’s maker, since the evidence here covers Apple and HP, not every brand.

What happens with a lower-wattage charger?
It may work, but slowly. HP notes that lower wattage can slow charging, particularly during heavy use, and Apple recommends at least the minimum wattage of the recommended adapter for the best experience. A laptop running demanding tasks on an underpowered charger can charge very slowly or hold its battery level rather than gain any.

USB-C describes the connector shape, not the power capability. Fast charging depends on the charger and device both supporting a matching protocol (USB PD, PPS, or a model-specific mode). The cable matters too. Per USB-IF, the 240W tier requires cables defined in the updated Type-C specification, so a cable that looks identical may not carry high power. For laptop-class charging, use a cable explicitly rated for the wattage you need.

Don’t confuse charging in with power out. Dell’s page on USB-C power output limits covers how much a Dell laptop can supply to accessories through its own ports (15W limit), not what its charger must provide.

Checklist for comparing chargers
- Protocol: USB PD, plus PPS if your phone needs it.
- Wattage: at least your device’s documented recommended adapter wattage.
- Cable: rated for the power you intend to draw.
- Multiport output: check the maker’s specifications for per-port output and how power is shared when several devices are plugged in. The manufacturer pages cited here don’t describe sharing behavior for any particular charger.
- Size and ports: a single compact charger can cover several devices if its top port meets your laptop’s needs.
