USB-C and GaN describe different things: USB-C is a connector system, while GaN (gallium nitride) is a semiconductor technology used inside some chargers. A charger can be both. To choose one, match its power output and charging protocols to your device; treat GaN as a possible design advantage, not a guarantee of faster charging.
USB-C, USB PD and GaN mean different things
USB-C describes the connector
USB Type-C, commonly called USB-C, identifies the connector and cable system. A USB-C port alone does not tell you a charger’s wattage, whether it supports USB Power Delivery (USB PD), what power its cable can carry, or how quickly a particular device will charge.

USB PD negotiates power
USB PD is a power-negotiation protocol that can operate over USB-C. The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) overview explains that connected equipment negotiates power so a device can request what it needs. A charger’s maximum wattage is a ceiling, not an instruction to force that amount into every device.

Gallium nitride is a semiconductor material used in some charger power electronics. It can enable compact designs, but it is neither a connector nor a charging protocol or speed rating. Navitas describes its GaN power ICs as enabling smaller designs; that vendor claim does not establish that every GaN charger is smaller, cooler or more efficient than every silicon-based charger.

- Faster & Cooler Choice: This UGREEN USB C Charger Block supports a max power transmission of 30W. Within 30 minutes, it can charge your iPhone 17 or Galaxy S26 to about 60%. Not only that, the Always-On Temperature Detection also ensures that it will not overheat during the fast charging process.
- Spend Less, Charge More: This USB C Charger has 3 interfaces, including 2 USB C and 1 USB A interface, which ensures its wide compatibility and can be used with different devices. You can charge three of your devices at the same time. Just enjoy the convenience of multiple interfaces.
- Real safety is safe inside and out: The charger features an upgraded GaN II chip, offering efficient heat dissipation and faster response to over-voltage, over-current, and short-circuit protection. Its housing is made of flame-retardant matte PC material, ensuring complete safety both inside and out for this compact charger.
- Compact and lightweight: This charger easily fits into your bag or pocket, making it perfect for travel, office, or daily carry. Its small size doesn’t just save space — it also keeps your desk tidy, reduces clutter, and lets you charge multiple devices anywhere without hassle.
- Multi-Protocol Charging: Supports PD, QC, and PPS fast-charging protocols. Tip: When using multiple ports simultaneously, single outputs up to 15W. For original Mag Safe accessories, use a single port.
What the USB-C label does—and does not—tell you
USB-C identifies the physical connection, not the full charging capability. Two chargers with USB-C ports can differ in maximum output, supported protocols, port behavior and included or required cables. Do not assume a USB-C charger supports USB PD or a device maker’s proprietary fast-charge mode unless its specifications say so.
USB-IF’s overview says USB PD Revision 3.1 supports up to 240 W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector. Its listed fixed voltage levels are 28 V for up to 140 W, 36 V for up to 180 W and 48 V for up to 240 W. These are specification capabilities, not features of every USB-C charger or device. The USB-IF document library lists USB Power Delivery Specification Revision 3.2 Version 1.2 dated 2026-09-14, so revision-specific limits should be read in the context of the applicable specification. See the USB PD overview and USB-IF document library.

Does a GaN charger charge faster?
Not by virtue of the GaN label alone. Charging speed depends on the power and charging modes supported by the device, charger and cable. GaN may help a manufacturer build a compact charger, but the material does not establish the charger’s output or compatibility. A higher maximum wattage also does not ensure a faster charge if the device or cable is the limiting factor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to choose a charger for your device
- Check the device’s requirements. Find its accepted power level and charging modes in the manufacturer’s specifications. Choose a charger whose output and protocols support them.
- Verify the protocol. Confirm that the charger supports USB PD or any other fast-charging mode your device requires. Do not infer protocol support from the USB-C connector.
- Check multi-port output behavior. For a charger with several ports, review its output table for the number of ports you expect to use. A stated maximum total output may be shared, and one port may not provide its full single-port output when others are occupied.
- Match the cable to the power requirement. Confirm that the cable supports the required power. USB-IF’s cited upper USB PD levels require a full-featured USB-C cable and connector.
- Compare portability details. Check actual dimensions and weight, folding pins and regional plug format. If compactness matters, GaN may be relevant, but compare product measurements rather than relying on the label.
- Review documentation and compliance information. Check the manufacturer’s detailed output specifications and applicable certification information. USB-IF describes signaling for negotiating power in its USB specifications and lists compliance requirements for USB Type-C chargers; see its compliance information.
A product example: one charger can be both
LC-Power’s LC-GAN-100 datasheet describes a GaN charger with two USB-C ports, one USB-A Power Delivery port and a maximum output of 100 W. It illustrates how a charger can combine GaN electronics with USB-C ports. The datasheet does not establish current retail availability, output at each port under every multi-port condition, or compatibility with a particular device. Consult the LC-GAN-100 product information for the manufacturer’s stated details.
