Yes—you can charge a laptop and phone at the same time from one multiport USB-C charger if both devices support charging over USB-C and the charger supplies compatible power to each port while both are in use. Check the exact laptop model’s power requirement and the charger’s simultaneous-use output; its headline total wattage does not tell you how much power the laptop port will receive.
Check that both devices accept USB-C charging
A USB-C-shaped port does not necessarily mean a device can charge through it. Confirm charging support for the exact laptop and phone models in their manufacturers’ documentation. Apple provides Mac charging guidance, and Microsoft provides Surface charging guidance.

Find the laptop’s power requirement
Look up the recommended or minimum adapter wattage for the specific laptop model. Requirements differ even among products from the same manufacturer. Apple recommends using at least the minimum wattage of the adapter recommended for the Mac model for the best charging experience. Microsoft lists minimum and fast-charge wattages by Surface model, so use the row for your exact device rather than applying one figure to all Surface products.

A lower-wattage adapter may still charge some USB-C-charging Macs, but charging behavior varies by laptop. Microsoft cautions that some Surface devices may charge slowly or not at all with a lower-wattage charger. If the manufacturer specifies a phone charging standard or wattage, check that too.

Read the charger’s output for both ports in use
Use the charger’s port-by-port output table and find the entry for the combination you plan to connect: the laptop and phone at the same time. Some multiport chargers share capacity, changing the power available on a port when another device is connected. The largest single-port rating—or the combined headline rating—does not mean each port can deliver that amount simultaneously. USB-IF’s charger guidance describes shared-capacity products and explains that available output can change as ports connect and establish power contracts.
Choose a charger whose simultaneous-use allocation meets the laptop’s requirement and provides a compatible output to the phone. If the manufacturer does not publish the allocation for both ports in use, you cannot assume the laptop will receive its full single-port rating.

Match the cable to the required power
Check the USB-C-to-USB-C cable’s power rating, particularly for the laptop connection. Connector shape alone does not show how much power a cable is rated to carry. USB-IF’s cable compliance guidance, effective March 2022, specifies 60 W and 240 W power markings for the respective cable categories. Use a cable rated for the output you need; do not infer its rating from appearance.
Understand what USB Power Delivery ratings mean
USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is a negotiated system: compatible devices and chargers establish a power contract rather than simply sending the charger’s maximum rating to every device. USB PD Revision 3.1 supports power levels up to 240 W with compatible equipment. USB-IF describes fixed-voltage levels of 28 V, 36 V, and 48 V as enabling up to 140 W, 180 W, and 240 W, respectively. These are standard capability levels—not a promise that any particular charger, cable, laptop, or phone supports them. See the USB-IF USB PD information.

Use this checklist before connecting both devices
- Identify the exact laptop model and check its manufacturer-stated minimum or recommended adapter wattage.
- Confirm that both the laptop and phone accept charging over USB-C; check whether the phone maker specifies a charging standard or wattage.
- Choose a USB-C PD charger with published port-by-port output for simultaneous use.
- Verify that the laptop port’s output in that configuration meets the laptop’s requirement and that the phone port provides compatible power.
- Check that the laptop cable is rated for the power it needs.
- Connect both devices and observe whether the laptop charges as expected. If it charges slowly or does not charge, follow the laptop maker’s guidance and try a power source that meets the model’s recommendation.
Compare chargers on the allocation, not just the total
When comparing multiport chargers, focus on the details that determine whether your two devices can charge together:
- USB PD support and compatible output profiles.
- Laptop-port wattage while the phone is connected.
- Phone-port output under the same two-device load.
- The power rating of the cable used for the laptop.
A higher total wattage is useful only if the charger allocates enough power to the laptop and phone in the configuration you intend to use.
