Choose a USB-C charger by matching its USB Power Delivery (USB PD) output to your exact laptop model’s recommended adapter wattage—not by guessing from the USB-C plug or buying the biggest number on the box. If you plan to charge a phone at the same time, also check the charger’s output from each port when both are in use and the phone’s supported charging standard.
What wattage charger do I need for my laptop?
There is no single wattage that suits every laptop. Find the exact model’s charging requirements in the manufacturer’s support page or the documentation for its original adapter, then choose a USB-C PD charger that meets the recommended wattage. If the manufacturer lists a minimum and a recommended value, use the recommended value for normal use; treat a separately listed fast-charge requirement as a distinct target.

- Identify the exact laptop model and charging port. Confirm that the particular USB-C port supports charging; a USB-C connector’s shape alone does not establish that it can charge the laptop.
- Look up the adapter requirement. Use the laptop maker’s current support material or the rating on the original adapter. Requirements can differ between models and change as product lineups are updated.
- Match the charger standard and output. Check that the charger supports USB PD and provides the wattage the manufacturer recommends for your laptop.
- Check the cable. For high-power charging, verify the cable’s power rating against the charger and device documentation rather than assuming every USB-C cable is equivalent.
For example, Microsoft’s current Surface Laptop support table lists 45W minimum and 60W recommended for fast charging for several listed models. Can I use a higher-wattage USB-C charger?
Often, yes, if the laptop supports USB-C charging and the charger supports the required standard. Apple says a USB-C-charging Mac can use a USB-C adapter or display that supports USB PD, and that the adapter may have higher or lower wattage than the recommended one. That guidance is specific to compatible Macs; check the instructions for your own laptop. Apple’s Mac power-adapter guidance explains its compatibility and recommended-wattage advice.

A charger’s advertised maximum is not a promise that every device will draw that amount or charge at its fastest rate. The device and charger must support compatible charging capabilities, and the cable must be suitable for the combination. USB-IF says USB PD Revision 3.1 enables up to 240W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector. This is the standard’s maximum capability, not a recommended target for every laptop. USB-IF’s USB Power Delivery overview describes the standard.
Will a lower-wattage USB-C charger charge my laptop?
It depends on the laptop. A lower-rated charger may charge a compatible device more slowly, may not keep up with use, or may not charge it at all. Microsoft specifically cautions that a lower-wattage charger can charge a Surface slowly or not at all. Apple allows compatible Macs to use lower-wattage USB PD adapters than recommended, but that does not make lower wattage the right choice for every laptop. Can I use one USB-C charger for my laptop and phone?
Yes, if the charger and both devices support compatible charging, but check the available power per port when both are connected. A multi-port charger may divide or reallocate its output, so its headline total wattage does not tell you what the laptop or phone will receive simultaneously. Compare the charger’s port-by-port simultaneous output with the laptop’s requirement and the phone’s charging guidance.

Google’s Pixel guidance identifies USB PD adapters rated at 15W or more and PPS adapters rated at 30W or more for its listed compatibility guidance, while noting that the phone must support a higher speed to use it. These thresholds are not universal phone requirements or a guarantee of a particular Pixel’s maximum charging speed. Consult Google Pixel’s charging guidance for the relevant phone.

How to compare USB-C chargers
Compare the specifications that affect your actual setup, not just the largest wattage printed on the charger.
- Whether your laptop supports charging through the USB-C port you intend to use.
- Whether the charger supports USB PD and provides an output compatible with the laptop’s requirements.
- Whether its output meets the laptop maker’s minimum or recommended wattage.
- How much power each port can provide when multiple devices are connected at once.
- Whether the phone supports the charger’s charging protocol and the rate you want to use.
- Whether the cable is rated for the intended power and the charger meets applicable regional safety requirements.
For Mac fast charging in particular, check Apple’s model-specific adapter and cable combinations rather than relying on wattage alone. Apple’s Mac fast-charge guidance lists those combinations.
