Actual charging depends on the cable, charger, device, and the power mode they can negotiate together. An E-marker helps identify cable capabilities, but its presence alone does not prove that a cable is certified or well made.
What do the watts on a USB-C cable mean?
Watts measure electrical power: watts equal volts multiplied by amps. A cable’s power rating is its supported capacity in a compatible setup; it does not generate power or make a charger deliver a particular voltage.

USB Power Delivery (USB PD) Revision 3.1 extends the standard’s power capability to up to 240W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector. USB-IF describes fixed-voltage levels of 28V for up to 140W, 36V for up to 180W, and 48V for up to 240W. Those are supported specification limits, not a promise that every connected device will draw that much. USB-IF’s USB Power Delivery overview also describes the earlier USB PD ceiling as up to 100W using 20V and a 5A-rated USB Type-C cable. That is historical specification context, not evidence that an older 100W cable is inherently unsafe or unusable.

What the USB-IF 60W and 240W labels mean
USB-IF’s current cable compliance information describes USB-C-to-USB-C cable categories labeled with a 60W or 240W power-capability logo. These are categories in its compliance program, not a guarantee that every cable sold in every market carries one. A listing that says “100W” is not automatically equivalent to either USB-IF logo category; assess the maker’s specification and any certification evidence on its own. See the USB-IF Cables and Connectors compliance page.

Does a USB-C cable affect charging speed?
Yes, but it is only one part of the charging chain. USB PD allows connected devices to negotiate power, and the powered device takes what it requires. A cable with a higher maximum rating cannot make a phone accept more power than the phone supports.
- Charger: its output and supported power modes must match what the device can use.
- Device: its input capability and charging behavior set the power it can accept.
- Cable: its power capability must be sufficient for the chosen mode.
- Negotiated mode: the connected equipment must agree on a compatible mode.
So a higher-rated cable may provide needed capacity or headroom, but by itself it does not promise a faster charge. If charging is slower than expected, check the charger and device specifications as well as the cable. There is no universal charge time that can be inferred from the cable’s watt label alone.

What is an E-marker in a USB-C cable?
An E-marker is electronic identification associated with a cable’s capabilities. It matters in USB-IF’s cable compliance context: the organization refers to a Power Delivery cable test plan for cables implemented with an E-marker, and a compliance update identifies an E-marker requirement for a listed USB-C-to-USB-C Gen 1 cable category. These statements do not establish a universal rule for every USB-C cable design. See the USB-IF compliance updates for the relevant category and context.
A marker is not a standalone quality or safety guarantee. For higher-power use, choose a cable whose maker explicitly states the required power capability and provides credible specification or certification information; do not treat an E-marker’s presence alone as proof of compliance.

(3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference
Power rating is not data speed or video support
Power capability and data rate are separate cable characteristics. A high-wattage label does not establish a cable’s data-transfer rate, video support, USB4 capability, or Thunderbolt capability. USB-IF’s cable compliance information discusses power and data-rate markings independently.
- Check the watt rating against your charging needs.
- Check the stated data rate separately if you transfer files.
- Check for explicit video or other protocol support if you connect a display or specialized device.
How to choose the right USB-C-to-USB-C cable
- Check the device and charger. Find their supported input and output power modes so you know what capacity the cable needs to support.
- Choose an adequate power rating. A cable rated for the compatible setup’s needs is sufficient; 240W is extra headroom, not a shortcut to faster charging.
- Match data and feature requirements separately. Verify data rate, video, or other protocol support from the cable’s specifications rather than inferring it from watts.
- Evaluate the evidence. Look for clear manufacturer specifications and, where relevant, a verifiable USB-IF listing or compliance claim. A compliance logo is useful evidence, but still match the cable’s capabilities to your equipment.
If the charger is the component limiting the compatible charging mode, a suitable USB Power Delivery charger may also be needed. Replacing only the cable will not overcome a charger or device limitation.
