STEM focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; STEAM deliberately brings arts learning into work across those fields. Neither label guarantees strong teaching or better outcomes. Choose by the learning students should achieve, whether the disciplines connect meaningfully, and whether your staff can plan and assess that work well.
What’s the difference between STEM and STEAM?
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. A strong STEM program can connect these disciplines around real problems; it need not treat them as four unrelated subjects.

STEAM adds the arts as an intentional learning domain. The State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education (SEADAE) describes STEAM as interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary engagement across science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics that preserves the integrity of the disciplines. The distinction is not that STEM lacks creativity or that STEAM is automatically integrated. What matters is what students learn and do.

Students should engage in an arts practice—such as making or interpreting art, designing, composing, performing, or communicating—and have a meaningful learning objective in that area. If an art activity merely decorates a science project, it is an add-on, not evidence of substantive integration. SEADAE describes arts integration more specifically as connecting an art form with another subject while meeting objectives in both.

Does STEAM improve outcomes compared with STEM?
The available sources do not establish that STEAM generally outperforms STEM. SEADAE’s 2020 professional guidance says STEAM’s impact has not been studied as extensively as STEM learning. That is a limit on the evidence, not proof that STEAM cannot help or that a particular program is ineffective.
A 2014 National Academies consensus study examined integrated STEM, not STEAM as a whole. Its committee concluded: “The level of evidence gathered by the committee is not sufficient to suggest that integrated STEM education could or should replace high-quality education focused on individual STEM subjects.” This does not rule out useful integration; it cautions against treating integration as a substitute for strong subject teaching.

There is no broadly applicable, directly comparable STEM-versus-STEAM outcome figure established by these sources. A program should be judged on its goals and measured results, not an uncontextualized claim about test-score advantages.
Which approach fits your program?
Choose STEAM when an arts practice advances the learning purpose, arts objectives matter in their own right, and educators can plan and assess the work across disciplines. Choose STEM or focused subject instruction when disciplinary learning is the immediate priority, an arts connection would be superficial, or staffing and planning capacity cannot support coherent integration.

Use these questions to compare program designs:
- Learning goals and standards: What should students know or be able to do in every participating discipline?
- Integration quality: Do students make substantive connections, or is one subject simply attached to another?
- Disciplinary depth: Does the project preserve meaningful learning in each field?
- Staffing and planning: Can the relevant teachers or teaching artists collaborate and prepare the activity?
- Assessment: Are the goals measurable, and does assessment reflect both content and process?
- Access and relevance: Can students with varied backgrounds participate meaningfully, and does the task connect with their contexts?
- Capacity and sustainability: Are time, materials, professional learning, and leadership support adequate?
For a STEM-side lens, the National Academies’ A Framework for K–12 Science Education emphasizes depth over breadth, coherence across grades, and integration of scientific and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas. It also stresses meaningful access for students from varied backgrounds.
How to choose and design an approach
- Start with a student outcome. State in plain, assessable terms what students should learn or be able to do.
- Select connections that serve that outcome. Include an arts practice when it contributes real knowledge, design, interpretation, communication, or creation—not just presentation or decoration.
- Co-plan the learning. Make each discipline’s objective explicit and provide the scaffolds students need to connect them.
- Check depth and access. Confirm that the task supports meaningful learning in each field and that intended students can participate.
- Decide how to assess before launch. Gather evidence tied to the stated goals, then use what students demonstrate to adjust the program.
The National Academies recommends that descriptions of integrated STEM programs specify the curriculum and nature of integration, instructional design and scaffolds, goals, and outcome evidence. That is a useful evaluation principle for STEAM too, though the report’s research scope was integrated STEM. The U.S. National Science Foundation supports STEM education innovation and research translation across formal and informal settings, including K–12 teaching and learning; that institutional support does not show that one branded approach is superior.

Sources and scope
This comparison draws on U.S.-focused sources, so local standards, age group, staffing, budget, and goals can change the best fit. For further context, see the National Academies’ 2014 report on STEM integration in K–12 education, which offers a framework and research agenda for integrated STEM, not an endorsement of STEAM. SEADAE’s 2020 paper on STEAM and the role of the arts in STEM is professional guidance from an arts education organization, rather than a systematic consensus review.
