If urlwatch is not alerting you to a page change, check the monitoring pipeline in order: confirm the command runs, verify the job and URL, make sure the fetched or rendered page contains the changed text, inspect the current filter output, then check diff and reporter settings. A silent report can mean a problem at any of these stages—not necessarily that urlwatch checked the page and found it unchanged.
How urlwatch decides that a page changed
For each job, urlwatch retrieves content, applies the configured filter, compares the result with the previously retrieved version, and invokes enabled reporters when it finds a difference. Troubleshoot these stages in sequence: a failure to run or retrieve content happens before comparison, while a filter or reporting setting can hide a change that was fetched successfully. 1. Confirm urlwatch is running
urlwatch checks jobs only when its command runs. If you rely on cron or another scheduler, verify the schedule, the user account that runs the command, and the environment available to that account. Check the scheduled command’s output or logs for errors; a command that works in your interactive shell may fail under the scheduler because it runs with a different account or environment.
The urlwatch documentation uses an interval of no more frequently than every 30 minutes as an introductory cron example. This is guidance, not a universal required interval: choose a schedule appropriate to your monitoring needs and the site.

2. Verify the job and its target
List configured jobs and their indices with:
urlwatch --listCheck that the intended job is present and points to the page or content you meant to monitor. Jobs are stored in the YAML job list, urls.yaml; open it for editing with:
urlwatch --editA URL job retrieves the content served by the web server. If the page’s visible content is assembled in the browser, the server response may not contain the text you expect; check the rendering stage next.

3. Decide whether the page needs JavaScript rendering
Use a URL job when the content you want to track is present in the server-served response. If client-side JavaScript inserts the content after the page loads, an ordinary URL job may never receive that rendered text. In that case, use a browser job with navigate. Browser jobs use Playwright, which must be installed along with its browser binaries, and they use substantially more resources than URL jobs. The job documentation describes URL and browser jobs.

4. Inspect what the current filter sends to comparison
Filters transform retrieved content before urlwatch compares it. If a filter selects the wrong element or removes the relevant text, a real edit can disappear from the comparison input. Preview the current filtered output for a job by index or URL:

urlwatch --test-filter JOB_INDEX_OR_URLReplace JOB_INDEX_OR_URL with the job index shown by urlwatch --list or its URL. Inspect the output and confirm that it includes the exact text or element you intend to monitor. If it does not, revise the job’s filter pipeline and test again.
5. Do not use an unchanged report to test an edited filter
When urlwatch retrieves a snapshot, it stores the version after filtering. Editing the filter does not retroactively apply it to that stored snapshot. As the official configuration documentation explains: “For this reason, unchanged cannot be used to test filters, you should use the --test-filter command line option to apply your current filter to the current page contents.” Use --test-filter to inspect the current page with the current filter, rather than treating an unchanged report as a filter test.

6. Check diff filtering, display settings, and reporters
A change can be found during comparison yet not appear as you expect in the report. Review the configuration’s display section and verify that the intended reporter is enabled.

Distinguish “no change was detected” from “no visible report was produced”: inspect the filtered content and diff behavior, then confirm the relevant display options and reporter configuration. The configuration documentation covers display settings.

7. Set a suitable readiness condition for browser jobs
For browser jobs, the page may have loaded before the content you monitor is ready. urlwatch supports wait_until values load, domcontentloaded, networkidle, and commit, as well as a wait_for locator. Choose a condition tied to the target content. The documentation discourages relying on networkidle and recommends using assertions for readiness instead. See the browser-job readiness options.
