If Playwright’s screenshot shows a login page instead of a protected portal page, first check whether the same browser context that takes the screenshot is authenticated. A login redirect usually means that context is unauthenticated, its saved state has expired, or the portal needs authentication state that was not restored. The exact cause depends on the portal; the steps below help isolate it without assuming anything about a particular Indian portal.
Why Playwright redirects to the login page
Playwright browser contexts are isolated. Logging in in one context—or in a separate manual browser—does not authenticate the context that later navigates to the protected page. The screenshot captures whatever that latter context can access.

A redirect is a useful clue, not a complete diagnosis. The portal may not have received valid state, the state may have expired, or a required storage mechanism may not have been restored. Other causes can be specific to the portal or its identity flow. Check the final URL and an authenticated page signal before concluding that sign-in succeeded.
Set up and reuse authenticated state
Playwright recommends using a setup project to complete login, wait for authentication to finish, and save browser state. Configure the screenshot test project to load that state. The following is a minimal pattern to adapt to the portal’s actual login form, final URL, and signed-in page element.

Diagnose state that still redirects
Confirm the context and final URL
- Run the login flow in the same browser engine and environment as the screenshot test. Record the URL after the flow completes.
- Confirm that the screenshot test uses the project configured with
storageStateand that it navigates using that project’s context. - Check the URL after navigation and assert a portal-specific authenticated control before calling
screenshot().
Check what the portal persists
Playwright’s standard saved authentication state covers cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey-based authentication. Session storage is a less common exception: it is specific to a domain and is not persisted across page loads by the standard storage-state mechanism. If the portal relies on session storage, save and restore it separately with an initialization script scoped to the portal hostname. Do not assume that missing session storage is the cause; verify the portal’s behavior first.

The browser follows redirects as part of the navigation, so the initial request’s URL or status alone may not explain why the final page is the login screen. Inspect the full redirect chain and final URL. Playwright’s network documentation also notes that cookies come from the browser’s cookie store; a cookie header passed through route continuation is ignored. Avoid treating a manually added header as a substitute for valid browser-managed authentication state.

Choose a safe authentication pattern
- One shared account: Playwright documents logging in once in a setup project and sharing state across tests when those tests do not modify shared server-side data and can safely use one account.
- Parallel tests that modify data: If tests mutate shared server-side data, use separate accounts per worker as Playwright recommends, so concurrent tests do not interfere.
- Browser differences: If authentication is browser-specific, do not assume state created in one browser engine will work in another. Reproduce login in the target engine.
- API login: Use an API-based login only if the portal supports an authentication API suitable for the test. It is an advanced option, not a universal workaround. Use an authorized account and follow the portal owner’s automation policy; do not bypass security controls.

Protect the saved authentication file
Playwright warns: “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Treat the file as a credential: keep it out of bug reports and source control, and exclude the authentication directory from version control. Regenerate it when its state is no longer valid.
