Choose Urlbox when you want to request renders through a hosted API; choose Puppeteer when you need to control a browser in your own application and are ready to operate it. They work at different layers, so the useful comparison is not simply which one takes a screenshot better. It is how much browser infrastructure and automation your team needs to own.
Urlbox and Puppeteer are different kinds of tools
Urlbox is a hosted rendering API: send it a URL or HTML and request an image or other render. Puppeteer is a JavaScript library that controls Chrome or Firefox through browser automation interfaces. With Puppeteer, your application runs the browser or connects to one you manage; with Urlbox, your application calls a rendering service.

That difference shapes deployment, control, and cost. A hosted API can reduce the work of running a browser fleet, but you still integrate the API and decide how to secure, store, and serve output. Puppeteer gives your code browser-level control, but browser installation, runtime compatibility, deployment, scaling, and maintenance become part of your system.

| Decision | Urlbox | Puppeteer |
|---|---|---|
| Product shape | Hosted API for rendering URLs or HTML. | JavaScript library for automating Chrome or Firefox. |
| Browser operations | Rendering is requested through API endpoints or signed render links. | You install and run a compatible browser or connect to a remote one. |
| Control | Request options configure such things as viewport, output format, full-page capture, and element selection. | Code can direct browser navigation and broader interactions. |
| Deployment | Integrate an API; asynchronous rendering is also documented. | Deploy and maintain the browser and its runtime as part of your application. |
| Published price | Plans and render quotas are listed by Urlbox; see current published terms below. | No comparable vendor per-render price is established here; estimate infrastructure and operating costs for your workload. |
When to choose Urlbox
Urlbox is a sensible fit when rendering is a bounded service in your product, an API is a good interface, and its documented features and plan limits cover your needs. It can spare your team from directly deploying and operating a browser fleet, while leaving API integration and output handling in your hands.

Input, output, and render modes
Urlbox documents URL and HTML input, multiple output formats, full-page capture, and selector-based element screenshots. It supports synchronous and asynchronous rendering. For long full-page captures, its guide describes stitch, which scrolls and combines sections with accuracy as the priority, and native, which uses the browser’s native full-page capture with speed as the priority. These are Urlbox’s descriptions of its modes, not results from an independent head-to-head test.
Check the Urlbox documentation and test your own pages, especially if they depend on lazy-loaded content, interaction, or unusual layout behavior. Feature lists alone do not establish that two tools will produce identical output on your pages.
Published Urlbox plan prices
Urlbox’s pricing page lists the following terms; prices exclude VAT. Confirm the live page for billing basis, quota definitions, overage behavior, and current terms before committing.

API behavior to account for
The Urlbox synchronous endpoint requires publicly accessible URLs. Its returned render URL is temporary and expires after 30 days; the API reference also says repeated requests are not cached or deduplicated. If you need durable output, plan how your application will retain it. If your workload involves private pages, verify the applicable security and access configuration rather than assuming the cited endpoint supports your setup.
When to choose Puppeteer
Choose Puppeteer when the work calls for broader browser automation, direct control over navigation and page actions, or browser configuration that fits your application better than a rendering API. That control comes with responsibility for the browser environment and its lifecycle.
Installation is only the first step
Installing the standard puppeteer package downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing browser. The puppeteer-core package does not download a browser; use it when you manage the browser yourself or connect to a remote one. Package-manager settings that block install scripts can prevent the browser download. Check the installation guide for platform-specific requirements and download details.
For production, plan for runtime compatibility, system dependencies, container configuration, process lifecycle, and scaling. Puppeteer’s current system requirements guide specifies Node 22.12 or later, along with browser-specific platform requirements. Its Docker guide documents an image containing Chrome for Testing and dependencies; running its sandboxed browser image requires the SYS_ADMIN capability, and the guide recommends using an init process to manage child processes. These are deployment considerations, not reasons that self-hosting cannot work.

- fit-Headless DP supports 36 different resolutions from 800×600 up to 4088×2160. For game-streaming at high refresh rate use fit-Headless GS.
- Works with any operating system, no software installation required
- Plugs into mini-DP or DP port, does not require additional power
- Native DisplayPort (not DVI/HDMI DP++ emulation)
Compare the rendering you actually need
Neither a feature checklist nor the tool category proves which will render your site more accurately. Before deciding, try representative pages with matching settings and compare the result, not just the request syntax.
- Use the same URLs, viewport, output format, and wait conditions.
- Include pages with lazy-loaded images, long full-page layouts, and any interactions your workflow requires.
- Run at the concurrency you expect to support, and record failed renders as well as successful ones.
- Measure latency and include retries, storage, compute, and engineering or operations time in your cost model.
This is an evaluation method, not a reported benchmark. The available product documentation does not establish a universal winner for speed, reliability, output fidelity, or break-even volume.
Which should your team choose?
- Lean toward Urlbox if an API is the right boundary for rendering, its options and published limits meet your needs, and you prefer not to operate the browser fleet directly.
- Lean toward Puppeteer if browser actions and code-level control matter more, and your team can deploy and maintain a compatible browser environment.
- Test both against your workload if output accuracy, latency, concurrency, bot handling, or total cost determines the decision.
ScreenshotNeo: a managed API alternative to try first
If you want a managed screenshot API, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to evaluate first: cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Its response identifies outcomes such as bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents and a free allowance of 1,000 screenshots a month without a card.
