Without the render ID, target URL, request options, status details, and image, the cause cannot be identified conclusively. Work through the evidence in that order before changing settings.
1. Confirm what Urlbox returned
For an asynchronous render, use its render ID to check the job status. Urlbox’s API response includes a human-readable reason for a failed render; a successful render includes output details such as the render URL and output size. A completed request alone does not establish that the desired page was visible. Urlbox notes that an error response or challenge page from the target can still be rendered as an image. 2. Check whether the page was captured too early
Open the target in a regular browser and identify what visible condition means its important content is ready. Then choose a wait condition that matches that behavior rather than increasing every timeout indiscriminately. Urlbox documents these relevant options in its render options.
wait_untilchooses a browser event or network condition for capture.wait_forwaits for a CSS selector to appear.wait_for_statecan require visibility rather than mere attachment.wait_to_leavewaits for a loading indicator or other selector to disappear.delayadds a fixed interval after the selected readiness event when the page needs additional time.
There are important selector-wait defaults: wait_timeout is 30,000 ms, and if a wait_for selector does not appear, Urlbox proceeds with the screenshot by default. Set fail_if_selector_missing=true if its absence should fail the render. A persistent wait_to_leave selector also proceeds by default; use fail_if_selector_present=true if it should instead make the render fail.

Urlbox’s September 2026 changelog says domloaded and turbo capture as soon as the DOM is ready; they no longer include a hidden network settle of up to five seconds. Add delay if the page needs more time after DOM readiness. Check the Urlbox changelog for the current behavior.
3. Look for a target-site block or challenge
A screenshot that appears blank may actually contain a CAPTCHA, an interstitial, or a mostly empty block page. Urlbox says automated browsers can be blocked based on factors including IP reputation, browser fingerprinting, request rate, or geography. The target may respond with an HTTP status such as 403 or 429, but a soft block can return status 200 and still show challenge content. Inspect the image and response details rather than treating a successful render status as proof of an unblocked page.

For status codes that make a capture unusable, configure fail_on or the broader fail_on_4xx and fail_on_5xx conditions. Retries can be configured with retry_on for status and engine conditions such as timeout or crash; retry_with can change options between attempts, including stealth or proxy escalation. Urlbox describes exponential backoff and up to three total attempts by default. Some advanced retry and proxy capabilities depend on plan, so confirm availability in the current blocking guide.
Status checks will not necessarily catch a challenge that returns 200. Urlbox documents two alternatives: a minimum output-size condition using small_size retries, or waiting for a known challenge selector to disappear and failing if it remains. Choose a size floor from the expected output of the specific page; the guide’s illustrative 50,000-byte example should not be copied as a universal threshold.

4. Verify render settings and format
Check the requested URL and the options that affect what can appear in the capture:

- Confirm the intended image or PDF format and a viewport large enough to show the relevant content.
- For JavaScript-rendered pages, confirm JavaScript is not disabled and that the wait condition corresponds to the content you expect.
- Check selectors and timing values for typos or assumptions about elements that may not exist on every page state.
- Review whether full-page capture is appropriate for the target and whether the relevant content appears below the initial viewport.
Urlbox documents that disable_js=true turns off JavaScript and prevents full_page=true and many other options requiring page-context execution. This is a configuration check, not proof that JavaScript caused a particular blank image.

The documented timeout default is 30,000 ms, with a range of 5,000–100,000 ms. A timeout indicates the render exceeded its limit. Urlbox’s CLI troubleshooting summary points to raising the timeout or using an asynchronous render; its async guide recommends queuing heavy renders. Neither change guarantees a fix: first use the failure details to determine whether the target is slow or the render is failing for another reason.
