For an FFmpeg concat-demuxer list, check the affected files’ stream layouts, codecs, time bases, and durations, then inspect the transition in FFmpeg’s log. The right fix depends on the files and command; a loop flag alone will not correct incompatible streams or misleading duration metadata.
First identify the playlist format
Concat-demuxer and HLS playlists are different inputs, so their fixes are not interchangeable. A concat-demuxer playlist is a text file listing media files and optional directives. An HLS playlist is commonly an M3U8 manifest. Confirm which one your command opens before changing options; concat-specific settings do not automatically apply to HLS.

For a concat-demuxer script, check the file entries, order, paths, and directives. If you rely on automatic format recognition, FFmpeg documents the marker ffconcat version 1.0 as the first line, with no leading space or byte-order mark. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Diagnose the first skipped or broken transition
- Save the exact command and playlist. Remove the YouTube stream key or any private ingest credential before sharing logs.
- Find the first affected file. Note its position in the list and capture FFmpeg’s log around the transition from the preceding file to it and from it to the next file.
- Probe and compare the affected files. Check stream count, stream order, codecs, time bases, reported durations, and whether audio and video end at different times.
- Check the input type and paths. Confirm whether the command reads concat syntax or an M3U8/HLS manifest. For concat input, check whether paths are rejected by the demuxer’s safety rules.
- Match the symptom to the evidence. A file that fails to open points toward a path or input-format issue; a jump or timestamp artifact points toward duration or stream-layout differences. Use the log and file metadata to distinguish them.
Fix common concat-demuxer causes
Files have incompatible streams or time bases
For concat-demuxer concatenation, FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. Compare every affected VOD’s probed stream list, order, codec, and time base rather than assuming that files with the same extension or resolution are compatible. The concat demuxer documentation describes these requirements.

If the set is not compatible for stream copy, normalize the inputs or consider the concat filter and a re-encoding workflow. FFmpeg’s joining-files FAQ distinguishes the re-encoding-oriented concat filter from the demuxer approach used to avoid re-encoding when streams are compatible.
A file’s duration is inaccurate
The concat demuxer uses each file’s duration to position subsequent timestamps. FFmpeg warns that a wrong duration—for example, one inferred from bitrate or affected by a truncated file—can cause artifacts. Check whether the VOD is complete and whether its reported duration matches the media. If you add a duration directive to the list, use a measured or otherwise defensible value; an arbitrary override can shift later timestamps instead of fixing them.

Audio and video end at different times
Compare the end times of the audio and video streams in the affected files. The demuxer adjusts timestamps globally, and differing stream lengths may cause gaps. Check whether the mismatch is isolated to one VOD or repeated across the playlist before changing the whole set.

A path is blocked by the safe-path check
The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1. If the log identifies a path or directive rejected by this check, inspect the playlist and file paths first. The -safe 0 option permits any filename, but relax it only when the playlist contents are trusted. See FFmpeg’s concat demuxer options for the option’s behavior.

Choose the right concatenation method

These are not interchangeable playlist flags. Select a method based on the actual stream layouts and whether re-encoding is acceptable, not just because a VOD was skipped.
