Upload a Voice Memo to Google Drive: Steps for Every Device

Use Drive’s upload option on your computer, Android device, or iPhone/iPad to save a voice memo in Google Drive.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To upload a voice memo, use Google Drive on the device where the audio file is available: on a computer, choose New → File upload; on Android, choose New → Upload; on iPhone or iPad, choose Add → File upload. Audio files are supported, and you do not need to convert a memo to a Google Docs format.

Choose the upload route for your device

Where the memo is Drive route Destination behavior
Computer Drive website, drag and drop, or Drive for desktop Upload into the folder you open or target.
Android phone or tablet Drive app: New → Upload The file appears in My Drive; move it afterward if needed.
iPhone or iPad Drive app: Add → File upload Choose a destination with Location before uploading.

Upload a voice memo from a computer

  1. Go to Google Drive and open the destination folder, or navigate to the location where you want the memo.
  2. Click New, then File upload.
  3. Select the audio file and confirm. Wait for Drive to finish uploading, then check that the file appears in the selected folder.

If the audio file is already accessible on your computer, you can instead drag it into an open Drive folder. Another option is Drive for desktop: move the file into your local Google Drive folder, and it will upload to Drive. Google’s computer upload instructions describe these routes.

Upload a voice memo from Android

  1. Open the Google Drive app.
  2. Tap New, then Upload.
  3. Find and tap the voice memo file. If necessary, browse the available device locations to locate it.
  4. After upload, look for it in My Drive. Move it to another folder if that is where you want to keep it.

To avoid using mobile data for transfers, open Drive’s Settings → Data usage and turn on Transfer files only over Wi-Fi. Google’s Android upload instructions cover the app workflow.

Upload a voice memo from iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Google Drive app and tap Add.
  2. Tap File upload, then select the voice memo.
  3. On the upload screen, check the file name. Tap Location to choose a destination folder if needed; rename the file there if you want a different name.
  4. Tap Upload and wait for the transfer to finish.

Google’s iPhone and iPad upload instructions document these controls.

Check storage and confirm the file is in Drive

Uploads use your Google Drive storage, including when the destination is a folder owned by someone else, according to Google Drive Help. The available space on an individual account and any applicable file limits depend on account details; Google’s cited upload instructions do not state a universal audio-file size limit. If the upload does not complete, check the transfer status and confirm that the account has enough available storage.

After the upload finishes, verify that the memo appears in the intended folder. On Android, check My Drive first if you did not move it to a different location. For more about Drive’s basic use, see Google’s computer guide to Google Drive.
