What Size Monitor Is Best for 1080p? A Practical Guide

For most people, a 24-inch monitor is the best size for 1080p. At 1920 × 1080 pixels, it keeps text and fine edges sharper than a 27-inch screen with the same resolution. Choose 27 inches if you sit farther away or prefer a larger image, and consider 1440p if sharper detail is more important than keeping the resolution at 1080p.

Why 24 inches is the best default for 1080p

1080p means a fixed resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. Those pixels cover more physical area as a monitor gets larger, reducing pixel density and making fine text and edges look less sharp. RTINGS’ 2024 calculations put a 24-inch 1080p display at about 92 pixels per inch (PPI), compared with about 82 PPI at 27 inches. RTINGS explains pixel density and its calculation.

For ordinary desktop use, the higher density at 24 inches is a useful balance: the image is large enough for typical desk viewing while keeping text reasonably crisp. Sharpness also depends on factors such as the panel’s coating and subpixel layout, so PPI is a helpful comparison, not a complete picture-quality rating.

How 24-inch and 27-inch 1080p monitors compare

Screen size Approximate density at 1080p Best fit
24 inches About 92 PPI General desktop use, reading, and sharper text at a typical desk distance.
27 inches About 82 PPI A larger image or a viewing position farther from the screen, with softer fine detail.

These approximate figures are RTINGS’ published calculations, not a universal threshold for acceptable sharpness. See RTINGS’ pixel-density guide for how resolution and screen measurements determine PPI.

Is 27 inches too large for 1080p?

Not necessarily. A 27-inch 1080p monitor can suit someone who sits farther away or values a larger picture over crisp small text. But it does not add detail: the same 1920 × 1080 pixels are spread across a larger screen, so fine text and edges generally look softer than on a 24-inch 1080p display. RTINGS’ 1080p versus 1440p guide describes 24-inch 1080p as having decent text clarity and notes that larger 1080p sizes are less sharp.

Choose a viewing distance that fits the screen

RTINGS gives general starting ranges of 20–30 inches (50–75 cm) for 22–25-inch monitors and 24–36 inches (60–90 cm) for 27-inch monitors. The ranges overlap; they are guidance rather than exact rules. Your eyesight and preference affect what feels comfortable. RTINGS’ monitor-size and viewing-distance guidance can help you check how a screen may fit your setup.

  • Use the suggested distance ranges as a fit check, not as a substitute for judging the screen at your own desk.

When 1440p is a better choice

If you want a larger display without giving up as much text clarity, compare a higher-resolution option such as 1440p rather than simply enlarging a 1080p screen. The right choice depends on your tasks and your computer’s ability to render the resolution and frame rate you want. RTINGS compares the resolutions in its 1080p versus 1440p guide.

What else to check before choosing a monitor

Screen size alone does not determine image quality or gaming performance. Compare the factors that matter for your setup and use:

  • Use: For reading and productivity, prioritize text clarity. For gaming, consider the games you play and the performance your computer can deliver.
  • Refresh rate and response behavior: A larger screen does not automatically provide smoother gameplay. Check the monitor’s specifications and how they fit your system.
  • Panel characteristics: Panel type, coating, and subpixel layout can affect the viewing experience and perceived clarity.
  • Desk fit: Consider viewing distance and how much of your field of view you want the screen to occupy.
  • Practical specifications: For a particular model, check current refresh rate, stand adjustments, ports, and warranty rather than relying on screen size alone.

For example, RTINGS’ comparison lists the ASUS VG246H and Dell P2425H as 24-inch 1080p IPS monitors, with maximum refresh rates of 75 Hz and 100 Hz respectively. These examples illustrate that monitors of the same size and resolution can differ in other specifications; they are not endorsements of present-day value or availability. See RTINGS’ monitor comparison.
