UPI AutoPay authorizes a continuing e-mandate for eligible recurring debits under the merchant’s stated terms. That difference matters: a one-time payment is final once initiated, while an active AutoPay mandate can authorize later debits until you manage or revoke it.
What permission do you give?
One-time UPI payment
You approve one payment to one recipient for a stated amount. It does not, by itself, grant permission for future payments.

UPI AutoPay
You set up a recurring mandate for a merchant and its terms. NPCI lists uses such as mobile and electricity bills, EMIs, entertainment subscriptions, insurance and mutual funds. The mandate’s schedule and amount or applicable limit determine the debits it can authorize; it is not blanket permission for any payment from that merchant. NPCI’s BHIM UPI page describes AutoPay use cases.

How the two payment types compare
| Question | One-time UPI payment | UPI AutoPay mandate |
|---|---|---|
| What you approve | One transfer after confirming it. | Eligible recurring debits under the mandate terms. |
| What you do | Authenticate and approve the payment. | Set up a mandate, then manage it through your UPI app or bank interface. |
| Ongoing controls | No recurring permission is created to manage. | NPCI requires mandate controls to view, pause, modify and revoke mandates. |
| Main practical risk | A mistaken payment cannot be stopped once initiated, according to NPCI. | A forgotten active mandate may continue to produce eligible debits under its terms. |
| What to check | Recipient and amount. | Merchant, schedule, amount or limit, terms, and how to find pause or revoke controls. |
What are the UPI limits?
There is no single figure that answers both the ordinary one-time payment ceiling and the rules for recurring AutoPay debits. The relevant limits depend on the payment category, whether additional authentication is required, and the bank or app’s controls.

One-time UPI transaction ceilings
NPCI’s UPI FAQ states a general ceiling of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. It lists higher ceilings of up to ₹2 lakh for capital markets, collections, insurance and foreign inward remittances, and up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme transactions. These are transaction ceilings, not AutoPay authentication thresholds. NPCI’s FAQ does not state a publication year for these figures. Read NPCI’s UPI FAQ.
NPCI also notes that member banks may set internal limits within prescribed ceilings, and that the P2P limit continues under existing guidance. Your own bank’s limit may therefore be lower than the applicable NPCI ceiling. NPCI circular of August 28, 2025.

AutoPay and additional authentication
RBI’s e-mandate framework sets thresholds for subsequent recurring transactions that can be processed without an additional factor of authentication; these are not universal transaction caps. RBI raised the general threshold to ₹15,000 in 2022. In 2023, it set a ₹1 lakh threshold for specified recurring mutual-fund subscriptions, insurance premiums and credit-card bill payments. The category-specific threshold applies to those named categories, not to every AutoPay debit. RBI’s 2022 notification and RBI’s 2023 notification.

Do not read “without additional authentication” as “no authentication is ever required.” It describes a threshold for subsequent recurring debits under the e-mandate rules. The mandate still has setup and management steps, and transactions above the applicable threshold may require additional authentication under the framework. Your bank or app may also impose its own controls.

Does UPI AutoPay need a PIN?
NPCI’s circular dated October 7, 2025 says: “All payer-initiated UPI Autopay operations, as per existing guidelines, shall require UPI PIN.” This covers payer-initiated AutoPay operations; it should not be confused with the separate RBI thresholds for additional authentication on subsequent recurring debits. The exact steps and prompts depend on the app and bank. Read NPCI circular NPCI/UPI/OC-223/2025-26.
Can you cancel or pause UPI AutoPay?
Yes. NPCI requires UPI apps and payer PSPs to support mandate lifecycle management, including viewing, pausing, modifying and revoking mandates. The circular does not establish identical labels or screen locations in every app, so check your app’s mandate or AutoPay section, or your bank’s interface, for the available controls.

When should a recurring debit notification arrive?
Under RBI’s e-mandate framework, the issuer must send a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before a recurring charge or debit. RBI’s August 22, 2024 circular exempts auto-replenishment payments for FASTag and NCMC that do not have fixed periodicity from this advance-notice requirement; the other e-mandate instructions continue to apply. Read RBI circular RBI/2024-25/64.

What can go wrong after you confirm?
A one-time payment may be difficult to reverse
NPCI’s UPI FAQ states: “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” Check the recipient and amount before approving. NPCI also advises users not to share their UPI PIN. NPCI’s UPI FAQ.
An AutoPay mandate can be forgotten
Because AutoPay authorizes eligible recurring debits, an active mandate you no longer want may continue to be used under its terms. Before setting one up, check the merchant, schedule, amount or applicable cap, and where the app lets you pause or revoke it. Review active mandates periodically and pause or revoke one when it is no longer needed. These controls reduce the risk of an unwanted future debit; they do not change the mandate’s stated terms.
Quick Recap
Before approving either kind of payment
- For a one-time payment: verify the payee and amount, then approve only if both are correct.
- For AutoPay: verify the merchant, schedule, amount or applicable limit, and the terms shown during setup.
- Know where to manage mandates: locate the view, pause, modify and revoke controls in your own app or bank interface.
- Check your bank’s limit: bank-specific internal limits and app interfaces can vary.
- Protect your PIN: never share your UPI PIN with another person.
