To set up a PlayStation Portal, first connect it to your home Wi-Fi and sign in, then enable Remote Play on your PS5 using the same PlayStation account. Get the first connection working while you are near the console before trying to connect away from home.
1. Set up the Portal on your home Wi-Fi
- Turn on the PlayStation Portal using its power button.
- Follow the on-screen setup to connect to your home Wi-Fi and sign in to your PlayStation account. Use the same account you plan to use on your PS5.
- Install a system software update if the device offers one.
Sony requires initial setup on home Wi-Fi before you can connect the Portal to public Wi-Fi. The exact prompts may vary, so follow the instructions shown on your device rather than relying on a fixed sequence of screen labels.

2. Prepare your PS5 for Remote Play
- Connect the PS5 to the internet and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the Portal.
- Install any available PS5 system software update.
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play for the user who will play. Sony says the setting stays enabled until you change it. Sony’s PS5 Remote Play guide
Allow the PS5 to wake from Rest Mode
If you want to connect while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Sony recommends connecting the PS5 to the router with an Ethernet cable when possible. If the PS5 uses Wi-Fi, connect the PS5 and Portal to the same Wi-Fi network for the initial setup. Sony’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, says broadband Wi-Fi of at least 5 Mbps is required to use the Portal, while at least 15 Mbps is recommended for a better play experience. These are Sony’s thresholds, not a guarantee of smooth play: actual performance depends on the connection between the Portal, PS5, and internet. PlayStation Portal product page
4. Make your first PS5 connection nearby
- With the PS5 connected to the internet and ready for Remote Play, open the Remote Play home screen on the Portal.
- Tap the Portal tile or press the cross button to connect.
- Confirm that the Portal can connect while you are near the PS5 before relying on it away from home.
If the Portal cannot find the PS5, check that both devices have internet access, use the same PlayStation account, and that Enable Remote Play is turned on for the relevant PS5 user. If the console is in Rest Mode, also verify both Rest Mode network options.

5. Understand what the Portal can connect to
PlayStation Portal streams games from a PS5 through Remote Play; it does not connect to a PS4. A PS Plus subscription is not required for Remote Play itself, although some games may require a subscription for their online multiplayer features. Cloud Streaming is a separate feature with its own availability and subscription terms, and is not needed for this first-time Remote Play setup. 6. Add audio if you want it
A headset is optional. You can use wired headphones or earbuds with a 3.5 mm audio plug, or compatible PlayStation Link wireless audio devices. Sony lists PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset as examples. PlayStation Portal support

7. Try public Wi-Fi only after home setup
Complete the initial setup on home Wi-Fi first. Portal software update history says version 3.0.0 introduced public-network connections, including some networks that require details such as an ID, password, or room number entered using a phone or computer. Version 3.0.1 expanded support to certain networks with extra validation. Whether a particular hotel, hotspot, or other public network works can vary by region and network.
