If you’re locked out of a Schlage keypad lock and don’t have the key, the intended way in is a valid User Code. If the batteries are dead, certain Schlage Touch models let you hold a fresh 9V battery against contacts on the exterior and then enter that code. A factory reset is not a way in. Schlage’s own guidance says it erases your codes. This guide covers the methods the manufacturer documents, which models they apply to, and what to do when none of them work.
Step one: work out which Schlage lock you have
Schlage keypad locks are not one uniform product. Some have a mechanical key cylinder, some are touchscreen models with battery contacts, and some are built around a different backup approach. Schlage organizes its support and programming documentation by product family, so the model number (for example BE365, FE575, FE595, FE695 or BE375) determines which instructions apply. Check the interior side of the lock, the back of the keypad assembly or the original guide for the model number before you try anything.

Which route fits your situation
| Your situation | Route | Applies to | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| You know a valid User Code | Enter the code and operate the lock as the manual directs | Keypad models generally | None |
| Code known, batteries dead | Emergency 9V jump start, then enter the code | Compatible Schlage Touch models with exterior contacts (FE695 and BE375 instructions document it) | Lock stays unlocked until battery change or manual relock |
| You have the correct key | Emergency key override | Only models with a key cylinder | Key can’t be removed while unlocked |
| Forgotten Programming Code | Look for default programming information; consider reset only as a last resort | BE365, FE575, FE595 guide | Reset erases all User Codes and the current Programming Code |
| Nothing above works | Schlage support or a licensed locksmith | Any | Avoid improvised bypasses |
If you have a valid User Code
Enter the code on the keypad, then move the lever, handle or thumbturn the way your model’s manual describes. Mechanisms differ between models, so don’t assume the motion is identical. The BE365 is a keypad deadbolt that accepts access codes and also includes a mechanical key, according to Schlage’s product page.
If the batteries are dead: the 9V jump start
Schlage’s FE695 and BE375 installation instructions describe an emergency jump start. In the FE695 instructions, Schlage says: “The emergency battery jump start can be used if your battery is dead to unlock your door.”

- PREMIUM SECURITY: High-quality metal construction provides strength where it counts; Grade 2/AAA rating offers trusted security and durability for residential and light commercial applications
- BATTERY POWERED FOR RELIABILITY: Deadbolt operates with included 9V battery; avoid lockouts with dedicated low-battery indicator; get up to 2 years of battery life with typical use
- SECURE KEYPAD ACCESS: Durable, silicone-coated numbers illuminate when pressed making it easy to enter your code in the dark
- EASY INSTALLATION: Replace an existing lever or knob yourself with no skill required; install in minutes with only a screwdriver and no hardwiring
- Get a new, high-quality alkaline 9V battery. Schlage specifies this type; a weak or non-alkaline battery is a likely cause of failure.
- Find the contacts below the touchscreen keypad on the exterior of the lock.
- Press the battery terminals against the contacts and keep it connected for the whole process.
- While it is connected, enter a valid User Code.
- Operate the lever or thumbturn as your model’s instructions show.
- Replace the dead batteries once you’re inside.
Limits: this only works on models with the documented exterior contacts. It does not replace the code; without a valid User Code the door stays locked. The FE695 instructions also warn that the lock remains unlocked until the dead battery is changed or the lock is manually relocked from inside, so don’t leave the house after opening without dealing with that.
If you have the key after all
On compatible keyed Schlage keypad locks, Schlage’s emergency override instructions say to insert the key, rotate it 270 degrees to unlock, then turn the knob or lever. To relock, return the key to its starting position. The document says the key cannot be removed while the lock is unlocked. This applies only if your model has the cylinder; many touchscreen designs do not, and Schlage’s Arrive product page is an example of a different design with a physical backup key.

If you forgot the Programming Code
For the BE365, FE575 and FE595, Schlage’s user guide lists “I forgot my Programming Code” as a troubleshooting item. Check the front of the guide or the back of the keypad assembly for default programming information. The Programming Code manages the lock’s settings; it isn’t necessarily the same as the code you use to open the door.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy reset is not a lockout fix
Resetting restores defaults and erases all existing User Codes and the current Programming Code. Before any reset, locate the default Programming and User Codes, because the guide warns that customer service cannot retrieve lost default codes. Schlage does not present reset as a way to open a locked door, so treat it as a recovery step to take only when you’re already in and have the right instructions for your exact model.

When nothing works
Go to Schlage’s support resources and the guide for your specific model, or contact Schlage support. If you can’t establish authorized entry, or there is urgent risk to people inside, call a licensed locksmith, and be prepared to show proof that you live there or own the property. Avoid bypass tools and tutorials of unverified origin; they can damage the lock and are not manufacturer-supported.

Preventing the next lockout
- Write down the model number and keep the guide with the default codes somewhere safe, not on the door.
- Replace batteries before they die. For models with the jump-start feature, keep a fresh alkaline 9V on hand.
- If your lock has a key cylinder, keep a spare key somewhere you can reach it.
