An unfamiliar device name in your router’s list does not prove a stranger is using your Wi-Fi. Router labels can be vague, and privacy features may give a familiar phone or other device a private Wi-Fi address that looks different from the one you expect. To sort out what is connected, compare each entry with the network details on your TV and other household devices before blocking anything.
Why a familiar device can look unknown
Routers identify clients using details such as a hostname or MAC address. TP-Link explains that its Deco system uses those identifiers, and that private or randomized MAC addresses can cause a known client to appear as unknown. TP-Link’s Deco support FAQ describes the behavior.

Apple’s private Wi-Fi address feature can use a different address for each network and, depending on the setting, rotate it over time. That can make a phone or tablet appear as a new or unfamiliar entry even though it is yours. See Apple’s explanation of private Wi-Fi addresses.
The name alone is not enough to identify a device—or to conclude that an intruder is connected. Work through the entries and compare the identifiers your router and devices show.

How to identify devices in your router’s list
- Open your router or mesh-system app or administration page. Find the connected-device or client list. For each unfamiliar entry, note the visible name, MAC address, IP address, and connection status if the router displays them. Available fields and menu names vary by router.
- Check the TV’s network information. Look for its MAC address in the TV’s network, support, or about settings. On Samsung TVs, Samsung’s U.S. support guidance gives the path Settings > Support > About this TV or Contact Samsung. Menu labels can differ by model and software version; see Samsung’s instructions for finding a TV’s MAC address.
- Compare the TV’s address with the router entry. A matching address is a much stronger identifier than a generic device name. If there is no match, check that you are comparing the address for the TV’s active Wi-Fi connection rather than another network interface.
- Repeat the check for other devices. Review phones, tablets, computers, streaming boxes, speakers, cameras, printers, smart-home hubs, and devices belonging to guests. Match entries individually; a manufacturer name or hostname may not be enough, especially when private addresses are in use.
- Rename confirmed devices. Use your router’s naming controls to label entries clearly, such as “Living room TV” or “Kitchen speaker.” TP-Link notes that a renamed device may appear unknown again if its private address changes.
What to do with an entry you still cannot identify
Do not block a device just because its label is unfamiliar. First check whether household members or guests own a device that might be connected, and compare any identifiers your router exposes. If you can confirm that a client is not yours, use your router’s block or access-control feature. The exact control depends on the router; TP-Link describes blocking a confirmed unknown client in the Deco app in its Deco support FAQ.
If you think someone may have been given the Wi-Fi password, change it and reconnect the devices you trust. Choose a strong, unique password for the router’s administrator account as well. A guest network can give visitors internet access without putting their devices on your primary network.

Strengthen your home Wi-Fi security
The Federal Trade Commission recommends securing the router, keeping its software current, and using modern Wi-Fi security. Where your router and devices support it, select WPA3 Personal; WPA2 Personal is the alternative when WPA3 is unavailable or incompatible. Change default router login credentials, install firmware updates, and consider disabling remote management, WPS, and UPnP if you do not need them. The FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guide explains these measures.
Router controls and update procedures differ by manufacturer. If your current router does not provide a useful connected-device list, device naming, blocking, or a guest network, those are practical features to compare when considering a replacement. You do not need new hardware simply to begin checking the devices already on your network.

TV tracking settings are a separate privacy issue
An unfamiliar router entry does not show that your TV scanned other devices or tracked them. If your concern is what viewing or usage data the TV collects, review the TV’s privacy or tracking settings and adjust them to your preferences. The FTC recommends checking these settings, but exact labels and paths depend on the TV; see its guidance on connected-device privacy and home Wi-Fi.
