TiVo or Xfinity DVR: Which One Fits Your TV Setup?

Xfinity X1 suits existing subscribers who want integrated DVR service. TiVo EDGE lists six tuners and 2 TB, but current sales and activation availability are unconfirmed.

Neither is better for everyone. Xfinity X1 is the more straightforward choice if you already subscribe to Xfinity TV and want recordings integrated with its boxes and app. TiVo EDGE for cable has stronger listed standalone hardware specifications—six tuners and 2 TB of storage—but its product page now redirects to support, and current sales and activation availability are unconfirmed. Treat those TiVo specifications as indexed product information, not proof that you can buy and activate one today.

How many programs can each DVR record at once?

Xfinity says a standard X1 DVR can record up to six programs simultaneously. An older Pace XG1 v1 box is limited to five. TiVo’s indexed EDGE for cable comparison lists six tuners. These are vendor-published specifications; they do not establish that every TiVo device or Xfinity box has the same capability.

How much recording capacity do you get?

The indexed TiVo EDGE comparison lists 2 TB of storage. Xfinity describes its DVR capacity in estimated recording hours instead: its overview lists about 150 hours for TV Core or certain legacy tiers, and 300 hours for other tiers. The Xfinity figure depends on the service tier, and hours are not directly comparable with a hardware capacity stated in terabytes.

TiVo Edge for Cable | Cable TV, DVR and Streaming 4K UHD Media Player with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos
  • Maximize your TV potential! TiVo EDGE for cable brings all your cable TV channels, recordings and top streaming apps like Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu and HBO Go to one easy-to-find place.
  • As powerful inside as it is streamlined and sleek on the outside. Schedule and record up to 6 cable shows at once and store up to 300 HD hours, and watch on your tablet or phone with the free TiVo app.
  • Enjoy the cinematic home theater experience of Dolby Vision 4K HDR, Dolby Atmos sound and 4K Ultra HD movies from your favorite streaming services. Supports analog audio
  • Grab hold of the gift of time with SkipMode and skip entire commercial breaks with a single push of the SKIP button.
  • Turn searching into watching. Just say what you want into the TiVo VOX Remote and OneSearch simultaneously searches across all your cable TV channels, recordings and streaming apps so you can enjoy it.

Check which storage tier is included with your specific Xfinity plan rather than assuming every X1 customer gets the same capacity. TiVo’s listed 2 TB specification is historical evidence from an indexed page; the product URL currently redirects to TiVo Support.

Can you watch recordings in other rooms or away from home?

Xfinity says completed recordings can stream on up to five devices, inside or outside the home. In-progress recordings can stream to the app while the device is connected to in-home Xfinity Wi-Fi. Xfinity also supports offline downloads: a downloaded recording is checked out to that device until returned to the DVR library, and the overview states a limit of 50 downloads per device.

The indexed TiVo page describes app and online access and expansion with TiVo Mini devices. Because current availability and feature support were not established, confirm the specific hardware, service, and app support before relying on those capabilities.

How do commercial-skipping features compare?

TiVo’s indexed EDGE comparison lists SkipMode, with availability varying by region and recording. Xfinity lists Smart Resume for eligible recordings. Neither feature is universal: whether it works depends on the program and, for TiVo, the region. Verify support for the shows you record rather than treating either feature as guaranteed.

What do Xfinity DVR service charges cost?

Xfinity charges vary by market, plan, and tier. A New York rate card effective August 13, 2025, lists $10 per month for 150-hour DVR service and $20 per month for 300-hour Premium DVR service. Those are dated, local figures—not nationwide prices—and the card excludes applicable taxes and other charges. Check the rate card and terms for your service address for current pricing.

Has Xfinity changed its recording options?

As of August 2026, Xfinity says channel-based recordings with custom start and end times are no longer available. Single-program and series recordings remain. If you relied on older instructions for recording a channel across a time window, check Xfinity’s current steps before planning around that option.

Which DVR should you choose?

Choose Xfinity X1 if you already use Xfinity TV

X1 is the practical fit when you want the DVR to work with your existing Xfinity service, boxes, and app. Before committing, confirm the storage tier, total local charges, and whether your particular box supports six simultaneous recordings.

Consider TiVo only after confirming it can be activated

The listed six tuners and 2 TB make EDGE for cable notable on paper, but its current sales and local CableCARD/service activation were not established. Verify that compatible hardware, a CableCARD, and service activation are available where you live before choosing it over an active provider-supported option.

Compare the features you will actually use

  • If you record several shows at once, compare the tuner limit of your exact box.
  • If you watch on phones or tablets, check the streaming, Wi-Fi, download, and device rules that apply to your recordings.
  • If skipping ads matters, confirm that Smart Resume or SkipMode applies to your programs and region.
  • If cost is decisive, use your own Xfinity service address and plan—not a dated rate card from another market—to compare recurring charges.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
